Late vs early game champ picks

Let's say you're last pick in champ select and you see your whole team picked late game champs, should you also pick a late game champ so that the team just reks late or should you pick an early game champ to help them get fed/have some kind of playmaking early, and vice versa if your whole team picks early game champs should you do the same and try to close out the game early or pick late game and have a saftey net incase things go late.

Taking into account the current meta being very fast paced and slim to none chance of hard come backs maybe a full late game comp is obsolete these days? Opinions plx
