When I started playing LoL earlier this year, I noticed that majority of the mid laners were always assassins (Fizz, Kat, Zed, etc), which was extremely annoying when i was trying to play Twisted Fate, Syndra, etc. But I've noticed that in the last 2 weeks or so, I've seen more mages going mid lane, specifically Viegar, Mal, Ahri, etc. Is that kinda the direction its going in, away from the assassin mid meta?
AtheosisX1 votesAhri is an assassin actually. And mages have been fairly popular for awhile now. The thing is though that assassins are always going to be more popular in general because of their mobility which makes them better at securing kills without help, avoiding ganks, and just less team dependent in general.
Ionian1 votesAhri is like 75% mage 25% assassin. Any standard mage can 100-0 squishies with a combo, what makes Ahri an assassin is that she also has mobility. But that mobility has a 110s cooldown so she's just a mage most of the time.
Toastey1 votesMages have always been strong; it just wasn't fun playing them into assassins if your team didn't peel. Besides that, mages are coming back to the forefront because a) Riot buffed a couple mages like Lux and Zyra, and b) a shitload of armour itemisation was added into the game but no MR gear, so magic damage naturally became relatively stronger than physical. There's always been this problem in League; that is, armour is too abundant and too cheap to buy, but MR is super hard to come by and there aren't enough MR items for individual situations.
Additionally, assassins are falling out of favour because of the tank era that Cinderhulk ushered in: assassins don't play well against CC-heavy fat tanks, but mages flourish against immobile targets. This is also indirectly tied to the excessive amount of armour itemisation available in the game.
