Struggling heavily with ranked...

Not sure if I picked the right board...never posted here before.

So usually about 2 or 3 times a year I re install LoL and give it another shot. I know it is a good game, but I am just terrible at it. I have a hard time wrapping my head around this because I am a Diamond league SC2 player, but have never even sniffed getting out of bronze in LoL. I have no idea where to start on the road to getting better. I usually play ADC because my wife likes to support...but I feel a bit better in the jungle because at least there I feel a bit more in control of my actions. Sometimes I can have alright games...but it almost never feels good enough. I lose like 85% of my ranked games and I end up getting incredibly discouraged. Sometimes I just get mega outplayed and stand no chance. Other times I can hold my own but other parts of the team fail. No matter what I do, or my team does, it just always feels hopeless and I end up uninstalling. It doesn't help that for some reason, this game has a major effect on my mentality...causing me to slam my desk in frustration more than I ever have before. I have been playing for 3 days now and already slammed my desk 3 times and hadn't done it for years before hand (and yes last time was LoL related as well)

So after the long story...I am looking for some help. I know LoL is a great game, my wife and friends enjoy playing but I have such a hard time sticking with it. What I really need to a guide to becoming a better player. But the few that I have found haven't been too helpful. I am not really looking for a 'new player's' guide because I have been playing off and on since season 1. I need something that is structured, that I can come in each day with something to work on and just start getting better. I need help in pretty much every aspect...builds, mechanics, game decisions, pathing, shot calling, team fights, CS, like literally everything because it all feels like trash. I am wanting to give the game one more shot here before I might just realize it is not for me. But in this final try I will make a serious effort to maintain a positive mentality and try not to care about the result so much, as long as I am getting better.

Anyone know of anything out there that could help me out? A youtube series would work, but I might even prefer a huge long written guide that I can read at work. Not trying to give you guys a sob story here I just find it so frustrating and unreal that I can be decent at other games like SC2, but for some reason I can't wrap my head around this game and i get outplayed consistently by bronze 5 players :\

Why are you surprised you can't expect LeBron to go and dominate MLB or NFL they're different games, not many people can be good at everything they do. But also another problem you keep quitting you won't get better until you keep taking those ass beatings and learn from it.

i get your point...

however i think lebron james at 6'8 250lbs and his athletic abilities would allow him to dominate the nfl as tightend

lol you think gronk is good ?

I guess I just figure SC2 to be a more difficult game in general so I thought I should be able to at least be passable at LoL. You are right though I tend to quit earlier than I should, mostly for my own mental reasons since I don't like being angry at a game around my wife lol. Thanks for the post.

Well I can tell you a few things that might help you get out of b5

First is find a duo that you work well with. Duo'ing is one of the best ways to climb out because you have to trust less people to do their job correctly. I would also recommend that if/when you duo that you have your partner go top if you are jungle or jungle if you are top. Next is pick 1 champ & stick to them. Know exactly how much dmg they do in every possible situation. This will help you decide which trades will fall in your favor & which ones won't. if you have any specific questions I would be happy to give you some advice. Btw I was in bronze 5 just recently but I climbed out using some of the tricks I listed. There are many more tricks I could tell you but I would rather you ask specific questions that way you get the answers you need & not just a big block of text. Ps I'm a jg main so if you want to main jg I can give you extra advice (also you can friend me in league if you would like so you can ask me questions anytime)

Well, I was able to get from Silver V to Plat V this season alone, so I think I may be of some help here. Here a ten tips that just might help you climb the ranks:

Step 1: Find a champion to one trick. Now, do note that being good with a particular champion isn't enough. You have to select a champion that is really good in the current meta, while at the same time picking a champion that doesn't get banned all the time. In an ever shifting meta, it can be difficult to find that one champion. For example, I've switched from playing Rengar, to Jayce, to Hecarim, to Aatrox this season alone, but for me personally, Kha'Zix has been my go to jungler whereas Renekton has been my go to top laner for this season because they're both rarely ever banned, they aren't picked too often, and they're both very reliable. Not to mention I'm very comfortable with their kits. So long story short, find the champion that's right for you.

Step 2: Choose wisely during champ select. Picking the right champion, runes, and masteries can make all the difference. Sometimes you'll have to adjust your build or pick a different champion based on what you and your team needs. If you just do whatever you feel like doing without giving it much thought, you're reducing your chances of success.

Step 3: Keep a cool head. Don't be that guy who flames his teammates for making mistakes. At the same time though, don't be the know-it-all shot caller, because it's those types of people who get on the nerves of their teammates. Plus keeping calm even when you're behind will help you make wiser decisions and increase your chances of catching up, thus improving your chances of winning. And if someone on your team is flaming you, or if a member of the enemy team is trash talking, just mute them and report them after the game. Riot implemented these features for a reason!

Step 4: Improve on your basic mechanics. Whether that be smiting important objectives, keeping a CS lead, peeling for your teammates, kiting/positioning, working on your map awareness, or just whatever. Having a good grasp on your game mechanics can mean the difference between victory or defeat. After all, if you're going to try to master the advanced tricks, first you need to master the basics since the majority of your gameplay will consist of the said basics.

Step 5: Become tilt proof. In a game like LoL, it's easy to give up and feel discouraged, but it's those people who never improve. Keep in mind that you will make mistakes, and so will your teammates, but that's life. You can't win every game. All that matters is that you keep that win rate above 50%, because even if it's just 50.01% you'll make progress eventually.

Step 6: Don't get cocky. Often times as players rank up they'll develop a mindset that tricks them into thinking that they're unbeatable, especially after being on a huge winning streak. Cocky players will often overlook important details, and thus make big mistakes that can cost their team the game. Don't be that guy.

Step 7: Have a positive attitude! Having a positive attitude will make you much more enjoyable to play with, and will boost your team's moral as well as your own. In the end, just because it's ranked doesn't mean you can't have fun!

Step 8: Focus on yourself, not your teammates. If you're too busy whining about your teammates mistakes, you'll more than likely overlook your own. So just be aware of that, and always look for ways in which you can improve.

Step 9: If possible, get a duo buddy. If you can't, no worries, but if you can get a reliable duo partner that you know you can count on. Doing so will make things much easier for you, and overall will give you a more enjoyable experience in ranked.

Step 10: Take breaks when needed. League can be exhausting, especially if you aren't doing so well, but if you're on a losing streak, don't worry about. Just take a break, relax and unwind a little, then get back to the grind when you're ready to. There's no rush. You have all season to reach your goal!

Can I suggest the League of Mentoring Discord? They can/will help you with questions on the fly on any role/champ you need, they give great mentoring advice and is run by D3+ volunteers.

I was trying to initially find a board post that actually told you how much cs you should aim to get per division and what to focus on in whatever rank you were but I couldn't find it for you :/ It's too bad cuz it's a very well put summary and very helpful. What I can tell you is that in general (in lane) you should at least aim to hit ~6 CS/min.

This is a Google doc put together by high elo players on how to manage minion waves properly

Other things I've noticed on getting better:

  • Keep your cool

  • Even if your teammates flame you- press mute if you need to... focus on you and your game

  • Never flame a teammate- chat should be used only for praise, otherwise use pings and keep to yourself

  • Win Trades

  • In lane never give anything you can't also get back... ex: nearly dying for a canon minion- yeah it will suck but losing half your hp is way worse than that especially if you get ganked or lose the next trade to give them 300 gold

  • Objectives- If enemy jg is top, consider a roam to another lane, drag, or a push to grab a tower

  • Ward

  • Make sure that you're warding river at every opportunity

  • You should never have a ward left in your trinket

  • buy control wards- these never die unless enemy kills them which gives you the chance to use it as bait, or see a jungler whose thinking about ganking your lane

  • Farm

  • CS is arguably more important than kills so get as much as you can when you can

  • Don't sweat it if you're losing lane, play safe and farm up so that you can be of use when people group

  • Champ Pool/Role

  • If you're seriously enjoying jg more then go for it- a good jungler makes a huuuuge difference

  • Pick a small set of champs that really appeal to you- that you enjoy playing- and play the crap out of them

Hope that helps a bit <3
