Why is it needed in League? If they removed it, would mages do just fine? The item gives me headaches....

It's a good defense mechanism for mages and AP assassins. Without it, the class would definitely be significantly weaker. Also people would probably hate Zed even more than they already do now, and I'm shocked that's even possible.

the problem is, when its not used as a defensive mechaic, but to cheese aoe abilities. lyssandra, morgana, fiddles, kennen, karthus with his e. there are a lot of problematic champions who abuse the item offensively, and turn it into a 0 counterplay cheese mechanic.

all of these champions were intended to be targetable when they trigger these aoe abilities, to counterplay them by knocking them out of a fight, or lock them up, or kill them fast enough before they deal too much damage. theyre abusing zonyas to circumvent and neutralize this counterplay. imagine miss fortune being untargetable during her ult. or kat. its the same bullshit, that shouldnt happen. these abilities are meant to be interruptable. even worse, over the years they have been balanced to not be able to work without the item anymore.

imo, nerf the item, in that it automatically cancels aoe abilities upon activation, and change these champions so that they can work properly without zonyas cheese.

its fine as a defensive item, but not when its abused in an offensive manner to negate intended counterplay.

There's a reason that the item is core on those champions. Without it, they'd just die as soon as they went into a fight. The item isn't unhealthy, even when used in these situations. The player is unable to do anything and you can just walk away from them. There is plenty of counterplay.

yea, and thats bullshit. there is not a lot of counterplay, because zonyas active prevents counterplay for certain abilities that should have it. these champions used to work without zonyas. then people discovered, that you could abuse the active with aoe abilities.

"just walk away from them" is easier said than done. in a lot of situations, the damage is already done. by the time you walk out of a fiddle ult, after he jumped into the middle of your team, it already dealt its entire damage. morgana can simply hold onto the active and move around to trigger the stun on her ult, unless someone tries to cc her, kill her, or knock her back. in that case she can hit the active.

over the years they have been nerfed and changed around the item, until they cant function without zonyas cheese anymore. imo they need to fix the entire situation.

nerf zonyas and make these champions more self reliant without the item. but still keep a certain level of counterplay.

if anything we need more needlessly large items, AP carries are based on their abilities to 100-0 you or at least cc or create something in the team fight. its a perfectly reasonable item because we cant do anything while were invulnerable. were sitting ducks waiting for a team fight, and anyone who builds this is likely a carry, so if anything you should be grateful we use it so you guys have an effective 4v5 for 2 and a half seconds.
