Why do people insist on Tear of the Goddess?

Drekavil··1 votes·5,219 views

My argument is that not finishing Tear will lose you lane early if you don't finish it (this does not include Ryze building tear + cata and then choosing cata over tear first because RoA = if you're losing, Seph = if you're winning), and you're going to have a very bad time if you don't finish it against an Assassin because they capitalize on early damage (meaning; do not expect to win trades early if you're building one). Some champs can get away with it because they're able to spam abilities more than most champs (Nid animal form, Ryze mana damage, etc), but I still think it's better to finish AA because you now get 16 mana/cast every 6/8 seconds rather than 10 mana/cast + 1 mana every 6 seconds (multipled the number by the amount of time can happen between CD's) , and if you're buying tear, you're commiting to mid/late game already, why not get their faster?

IMO based on gold efficency: Cata = Tear (Cata is for early sustain,Tear is commitment to late) AA = RoA depending on matchup (gold efficiency is equal, RoA is better against burst) Seph > RoA depending on matchup (Assassin heavy team vs Late game heavy team, Seph has a higher gold efficency than RoA) Seph will take longer to create if you do not finish tear, and you will lose out on a nice mid/late damage spike if you don't upgrade to AA, and god knows how many minutes people play with max stacked tear due to not having the amount of gold necessary to finish it because they're finishing other end game items.

Not finishing your item before you go towards next item is detrimental to your champ, because fully bought items maximize gold.

Examples of items deficit if not finished:

RoA = loss of mid/late game; RoA gives HP/Mana/Small AP and can finishes around mid game if bought early enough. Without it, cata by itself only helps sustain early, because the healing/ Mrgen proc late is worthless due to spells doing increased damage.

IE = loss of early/mid/late game, if you're an ADC, you either want this item first, or soon because it is the most damage for the amount of gold you can buy, due to the fact that it increases the value of all other ADC items. (depending on ADC)

Tier 2 Jungle Item (socketed jungle item) = loss of early/mid/late game ( +30 gold per monster camp is HUGE)

AA= loss of mid/late game, Tear is stacking at 10 mana/cast every 6 seconds if you use 2 abilites, which takes about 450 seconds to reach, which is 17.5 minutes, which requires you to have an infinite mana pool to spam abilites as soon as you buy tear. Relatively, buying AA means you will stack at 16 mana/cast every 6 seconds, and recieve 3 mana free every cast.

If you're losing lane, which can happen because tear -> AA makes your early game weak, then build 2nd item defensive/situational to compensate so your laning phase doesn't destroy mid game which destroys late game (zhonyas most of the time).

I don't understand your argument at all. Almost every single mage in league of legends is short on mana now. Tear is a much less costly investment than ROA, and it's much more immediate. Similarly to rushing pre-nerf Chalice, you can just buy it and then build 4 straight damage items.

Drekavil1 votes

Chalice was so staple because it had nearly no negative outcome for buying it. Every mage who wanted mana/spam abilites would rush it to utilize a better lane.

Buying tear and then NOT finishing it essentially means you've invested 720 gold later in the game, as well as a tear that won't be as close to seph as an AA staff. Mages are terrified of mana usage, and people don't understand how to utilize mana. If you buy tear and spam abilities early in order to stack if fast. That's such a huge risk that anyone that knows the gravity of an oom mid, can easily gank/tower dive/ secure a fb.

Why do you think Singed,Urgot, Blue Ez, Etc. are so weak to early when they buy tear first, and then don't finish it? It's an immense investment to late game, which is never guarenteed.

I don't understand the necessity of having to have an immense mana pool immediately when you can simply land your spells and maximize your damage rather than spamming and missing. Then spending the gold from smart farming/mana use to utilize an item.

I honestly would rather see 3 doran rings, deathcap xerath, than tear deathcap, building 2nd damage item, xerath.

disregardable1 votes

You don't understand the benefit of efficiently having enough mana to lane properly? Alright then. Can't help you with that. I mean I guess it's great that you're fine with tower hugging, tanking harass, and auto-attacking creeps for 5 minutes while you're oom.

Drekavil1 votes

if you're having issues sustaining in lane before 1300 gold from farming and going oom and tower hugging because of that, I don't know how to explain it to you, but maybe you should utilize AAing creeps more and get free mana back from first buy Doran's or just run Mrgen runes.

Besides, tear's regen is 25%, your early game leveling proc with catalyst/RoA should be more than enough to carry you until you have athene's/morello.

I don't understand why you think having tear instantly gives you 750 mana for free. 5 mana per cast is like a nickel for a dollar for a cast. You want to build mana with tear, but it's so slow by at building mana it just doesn't seem worth it, better to finish it to maximize your mana/sec.

mjack333 votes

Buying Tear first back does not equal losing lane. People rushing tear and then not understanding what to do after that, hen making lots of mistakes, loses lane. I think you are confusing the two.

Drekavil1 votes

Building tear first and not finishing it against a mid that utilizes early game damage to get ahead (Kat, Zed, LB, Liss, Akali), it's like building thornmail first with no HP to maximize the armor.

People think the shield from seph will help them later in the game, and it does, but having an enemy mid fed because of your lack luster early/sometimes mid game, and the enemy's damage presence in tf's before seph.

I don't understand what the point of tear by itself is unless you know the game will be late.

mjack333 votes

Usually, your runes should be able to compensate, and it's not really a problem. If you missing 40 AP (but being able to cast abilities A LOT more often) for 5 minutes causes you to lose lane , there's other things that went wrong there and it's not just the tear.

In addition, the tear gives more ap in the long run then the alternatives :).

Now if someone doesn't finish the tear before hitting 750 mana...... then that's just bad. But you generally have time for 1 full item before doing so, and the mana regen plus extra mana is very useful in the meantime.

Drekavil1 votes

Just picture it as, you bought an item that has 0 effect on the enemy other than your mana pool slowly building so you can have 1 more cast every time you come back to lane. But that's if you only buy tear, and then buying damage. 2 mana per cast, while most casts cost 50 - 80 mana.

Tear itself isn't what people think it is, it's a late game investment. And unless you can read the game early (such as all champs are super late game), I don't understand the point of buying tear. RoA just seems more bang for your buck and capitalizes right around when you need it most.

mjack333 votes

Uh...... no. No it doesn't.

Rod of Ages gives you more health but less of every other stat than seraph's embrace. The same with Catalyst the Protector vs Tear of the Goddess. And to be blunt, they both build the 860 wand so that's not a real differentiating factor. If you want, you can even build the wand before the tear and get much more offensive stats in the long run reguardless. Tear of the Goddess also gives you MANA REGEN, which combined with the mana is MUCH MUCH more than 1 or 2 more casts.

Rod of Ages, as far as mana and ap goes, is far inferior, and you would generally only build it if you want the slight tankiness adding about 450 to 650 health would give? on someone who isn't going to get that tanky. For this, you are giving up mana, mana regen, the shield, and ap.

Drekavil1 votes

Your arguement is mages now have issues with mana, so in term buy only Tear, then damage, and finishing tear at 750 stacks rather than Cata into RoA to maximize spending to compensate.

I agree with your first statement, but I don't agree that not finishing your tear before building other items is worth.

So rather than sustaining with catalyst level up proc (which procs alot because you level quite fast in laning phase), catalyst automatically gives you regen/level 150 health, 200 mana. Finishing RoA, which is only 100 more gold than a AA Staff, but guarentees the second you buy it, you gain 20 hp, 20 mana, and 2 ap every minute until it's max stats at 10 mins.

Tear guarentee's a start of 250 mana, and if you do not level it into a AA staff/Manamune, you lose 3% AP/mana. And an increase in stacking from 5/cast to 8/cast.

Buying tear itself and then building other items wounds your lane phase. Buying tear and then making AA means you're utilizing that your focus is late game because it become much more efficient the later into the game you get until it hits it's that huge spike of mana/AP.

Another point is, what do you build for CDR if you build Tear? Most CDR items have Mrgen if they're not tank items. So building RoA into Chalice or Morello or both means you now have all the mana capabilities you need. I value CDR too much to make a commitment to 3 MRegen items to maximize CDR. Most of the time I will not always have Blue/Pot of Sorcery, so having High Mrgen/40% CDR/High HP/Moderate Mana/ Moderate AP from RoA/morello/athenes seems better than Overly High Mrgen/ 40% CDR/ No HP/ High Mana/High AP seph's morello/athenes.

Also, I value HP alot more now because of the assassin meta right now. Because bans are only 3 ea, the issue comes up that a number of assassins/point click burst will get through regardless of what you do.

Being oom but alive = AA's for damage/one or two casts a fight. Being dead but full mana = no damage.

Seph's embrace is godtier great, but tear is god tier bad until it's upgraded. If the stacks were halfed and you only needed 375 mana to make seph's. I would buy it every time because that is possible to make before 20 mins.

I don't agree with the meta right now that you have to invest an immense amount of your power to late game when so many champs are focused on winning early/mid game, but that is meta, and tear is too slow.

SEKAI2 votes

Because you need something to back up your taunt when you decided to say "Hey guess what, why tear is fully stacked" in all chat.

But really though, mana regen took a hit, that's prob why some people are more obsessed with tear than before.

3tyson2 votes

I sometimes buy a tear afther buying 2 items on nidalee for mana regen and larger pool i might not even finish it but i will be easier able to donate blue

Drekavil1 votes

Nid is an exception because her non mana costing spells (animal form) can stack the tear. I still think it's better to buy tear first then another doran's and start doran's first. Getting seph's so much faster means you'll maximize tear if you ever buy it.

Miku Lv992 votes

Because they nerfed the heck out of chalice, Athene's, Morello, etc., so for any mage that really needs a lot of mana, it's like the only item that gives a whole lot of mana left.

Drekavil1 votes

Buy RoA if you're worried about having a low mana pool.

NorthernDruid1 votes

RoA doesn't actually help your mana regen. AA's/SE gives 50% base mana regen.

Drekavil1 votes

The leveling proc helps you sustain mana in lane. Mana regen can be built from Athene's or Morello 2nd item because people usually build that if they're building RoA. People that build Tear first and then an immediate damage item 1, wasted 720 gold. I have the same issue if you build Cata and then build damage. Not finishing your tear first is so detrimental to your damage, it's sickening. If you're going to build tear first, be a summoner and finish it.

Besides,Having 2 mana regen items is all you need, having 3 is overkill.

NorthernDruid2 votes

I agree that you should finish your AA's not too long after you get it. If you can't stack the AA's fast enough and need to rely on the per 8 seconds proc, then you really don't have any buisness building tear and should've gone for morello or chalice instead.

If you're building both AA's and RoA I'd delay finishing my AA's until I have my rod, but that's not relevant on that many champions I suppose.

And yeah, Catalyst passive i good for mana regen in lane, but it falls off after the laning phase, and you're gonna need some proper mana regen for when that happens.

Drekavil1 votes

Amen.

IcyPepper2 votes

Honestly, I kinda agree.

Like, it's a great early laning item. I'll be honest there. But it should be upgraded as soon as possible if you want the on-hit effects and the like. If you still have it by the 15 minutes mark, you're not dealing as much damage as you could be.

Drekavil2 votes

Maximizing gold = biggest part of league/Mobas that incorporate gold/buying. Skill = 2nd

You can be amazing at a character and know all the in's and outs of them, but if you build horribly, your game play suffers so much that it effects your team. So many games, you see tier 2 boots first Cait. And then cait wonder's why she's 1/4 by 15 minutes whenever bot lane phase ends.

IcyPepper2 votes

Man, I hate it when someone rushes boots... there are a few lanes where you do that, yes, but they're rare and most people recommend building something first while getting tier 1 boots first.

The only adc I would ever buy tear on (and upgrade asap), besides Urgot who I don't play, is Ashe. I believe her Q will proc Tear as long as it's toggled on since it uses mana. Then I'd build it into item 3042. Maybe Ezreal (who I don't play) as well...?

Well, by that logic Jinx could use it as well, but like hell I'd build it on her. Her rockets are nice for waveclear and all that, but I'd never trade important early game items and delay her monstrous late-game like that.

Drekavil1 votes

I've seen the Manamune on Ashe before and it does work, it essentially gives your Q damage AND a slow, which is a great burst mechanic if your entire team is AD and you don't want to build IE because you're afraid of the Thornmail. But it's rare these days, the most efficent way to build Ashe is like most ADC's right now, BF -> Boots 1-> IE -> (Avrice -> Zeal + Boots Tier 2 -> Static) or (Zeal -> Boots 2 -> PD) -> LW -> BT/BoRK -> Situational.

But Kalista builds Hurricane and Vayne builds BoRK or IE first depending on the playstyle.

If it works for you and you win, because you utilize your gold to its maximimum then I could care less. I don't mind supporting Urgot ADC as long as he builds efficently.

Anivia .

Rod of Ages is insufficient. You need both Roa and another item. Athenes can give you enough, but its damage later in the game is a LOT weaker than tear.

Also, Muramana gives a STUPID amount of damage to Kha'zix. His passive double procs it, his Q procs it again. Tons and tons of damage, especially since you build lots of armor pen to go with it.

Drekavil1 votes

I'm not sure if Kha Q ever proced on hit effects. It resets auto attacks if that's what you mean by "double procs"

Cata is inefficent, RoA is extremely efficent. Tear is inefficent, but AA is extremely efficent. Your arguement is you can solely rely on Seph's for mana regen, which makes no sense. I agree that Seph's damage is superior to RoA, but you also need to realize that RoA will be finished before Seph's on certain champs.

Also, RoA is a early/mid game item. Seph's is a mid/late game item.

RoA is used to counter Assassin/Burst Mids/Jungles early.

People misunderstand my point, I don't dislike AA/Seph's. I hate tear by itself, just like I hate Cata by itself.

The point of building items a certain way is to synergize them.

If you want to compare single items, then yeah. A 3rd tier item is probably going to be better than a 2nd tier item.

Darkwind1 votes

Read muramana's effect again- it works both on-hit AND with single target spells.

Whan kha'zix autos with his passive up, muramana deals damage two times- once because of the auto, and once for the on-hit magic damage. So, you get a burst of damage- your auto damage, 2 muramana procs, and your passive magic damage.

Also, when you hit them with your Q, you get another proc, because your Q is a single target spell.

Basically, you leap in, auto (2 procs) Q (1), R, auto (2) Q(1), R, auto (2) Q (1), R, auto (2) Q(1) for a total of 12 muramana procs in a pretty short period of time. Ofc you can also aa-q-aa each time if you want, but that takes more time and leaves you more vulnerable, and the second aa will only get you 1 muramana proc since your passive won't be up.

Also, catalyst is amazing- if your goal is sustain. It's one the the best laning items in the game, period. You just have to use it correctly. You trade just before leveling up each level, and the trade is free. You'll regen up the mana and HP you lost as soon as a couple more minions die.

Finally, you fail to understand what I was saying. I wasn't saying you buy tear instead of roa, I was saying you buy BOTH. Of course Roa will finish stacking first some of the time, but the items fullfil entirely different purposes. Seraphs is damage and mana, Roa is tankiness and mana. If i wanted mana and damage, i'd buy morello, seraphs, even grail, before I got roa.

Drekavil1 votes

Here's the text from Mura

TOGGLE: Single target spells and attacks (on hit) consume 3% of current Mana to deal bonus physical damage equal to twice the amount of Mana consumed.

Kha'zix Q does not proc On-Hit effects, you can google this or I can post multiple sites that say that it doesn't, up to you. Which means you have to AA after every Q to maximize the Mura. So this cuts the procs from 12 to 8 if you don't AA (I just removed the 1 from everytime you placed a 1 next to Q), but that's still huge. However you are correct on his passive proccing the effect, so it also benefits from spellvamp, and that I did not know! so Kudos.

I can see now building Mura in lane as Kha is worth.

I agree that Cata is great for lane sustain, but it's lack luster the later in the game when spells do more damage. I don't agree with fighting just before leveling, because the amount of mana/hp that you get is over 8 seconds (18.75 hp/sec and 25 mana/sec), and can result in a bad trade if they go for lethal. I will admit it's amazing when you level from the kill and their ignite is wasted because of the healing. So building it and not finishing cata before other items makes a great early game item, but a horrible mid/late game item.

Buying both is a bold playstyle, and is hard to get away with offensively. When you do this, you commit mainly to mana, tankiness, and a small AP boost that grows the longer you play the game. That doesn't compare to buying Athenes/Morello that allows you to have CDR (spamming more because mana pool is higher) Larger amount of Mrgen (50% + 2% every %mana missing or 100% mana regen). I agree that on certain champs, it's amazing (Ryze because he gains damage out of Mana and he wants the tankiness to be able to soak, maybe Karth to maximize the duration of E. However, this depends on how bursty their team is vs how much dps your E does when you die).

My point is, if you're buying RoA, then commit to early/mid game which is a huge part of picks (Kat, Akali, Zed, Irelia (mid game) Vi, Ahri, Vieg (mid game), LB, etc) which is a huge part of the community atm because there are 6 bans for 24 burst/assassin champions. If you're buying Seph, commit to mid/late and play defensive early if against Assassins, don't expect to out damage them. If you buy both, commit to whichever part of the game you can maximize your strength. Do not buy tear and wait for tear to stack to 750, and then finish AA. Do not buy cata, only use it to have an easier laning phase, and wait until you have damage items before finishing RoA.

Nothing wrong with building tear or cata, or tear & cata, the problem is not finishing the item(s) before you move onto a different one.

It doesn't have to apply on hit effects to apply muramana. Test it for yourself if you don't believe me, it works- you can hear the sound, see the damage, it's pretty obvious.

Single target spells means that any and all spells that happen to not be AoE apply murmana. Examples include Syndra ult (one proc per ball!), Ryze Q, heck, LB even gets 2 from each Q and chain if she's crazy enough to build it. I think where you're misunderstanding is you're reading this way:

(Single target spells and attacks) (on hit)

When it should be read:

(Single target spells) and [(attacks)(on hit)]

When you summon your E ghoul, it does- the damage is a single target spell in that case. Obviously your W doesn't work, that's AoE damage. Your enchanced Q auto attack also applies it once.

If you're asking why each ghoul attack doesn't also apply it, it's because Muramana doesn't make pet auto attacks deal damage. For example, Muramana on Annie won't make Tibbers's autos deal muramana damage, and it won't work on Malz voidlings either.

It helps his lane but it's really not that good on him. It gives anywhere from 120 to zero extra damage on your Q/autos while giving around 65 AD. Although this AD is really high, it doesn't have any penetration or defense while also having less reliability and AD than Hydra. It's not bad, but it's really not that good compared to other stuff. It also makes it a bit more difficult to buy defensive items.

240*, see above, it hits twice on auto attack with passive. expect somewhere around a total of 220+100+180+80+140+60+100+40 damage from it- just the passive- in a fight, around 940 total, as a minimum. And that's with you using a substantial amount of mana on not muramana.

item 3047 item 3043 item 3074 item 3035 is pretty much core. Can substitute mercs if absolutely necessary. Last two items can be anything among:

item 3142 item 3071 item 3026 item 3156 item 3139 item 3102 item 3143 All of those but ghostblade have at least a defensive element to them, and you're an assassin- if you need more than 1 dedicated defensive item, something's gone wrong.

Minrog2 votes

The item 3070 provides a higher damage 3 item spike than RoA does imo. If the timing coincides with a a great level 16 champion power spike then it can be useful. Not every champion is Ahri Leblanc who need to own early or they will fail hard.

It's possible to have both a item 3070 and a item 3027 early if you are having a great game, and the item 3040 is pretty gold efficient. Nowadays you'd probably grab a item 3285 instead of one of those though.

I think a case can be made for both Cassiopeia and Karthus picking up an early item 3070 . I don't know about the ones you mention.

Drekavil1 votes

I agree, and if you're winning lane, you should finish your Tear first, and if you're losing you should finish your Cata. Best example of this would be Ryze.

I'm not sure you can get a tear to 750 stacks (without upgrading it into AA) before level 16 to maximize the damage spike like you said.

I personally like to build Suicide Karthus if I'm going to play Karthus.

A champ I don't agree having both tear and cata is Swain. His abilities can't be spammed as fast as champs that get it regularly. An argument for this would be Anivia tear + Cata. Anivia can stack tear efficently because her ult is a set amount of mana, Swain's gets exponential, and people usually turn it off to avoid going oom. RoA + Athene's is better in my eyes for Swain.

I'm a kinda guy who likes to maximize CDR if I'm behind, and Damage if I'm ahead when I play mid. If I'm ahead I can usually counter jungle the enemy blue in coordination with teammates, but it's sometimes scary how noticeably different the laning phase is when you build tear vs not building tear.

Mid has such an immense effect on the game now, since cost now leans more toward mid than ADC, mid can easily get ahead with 1 - 2 kills, rather than an adc who needs multiple to reach that type of damage. The lane being so small and close to objectives gives you more insentive to be stronger than the enemy mid to efficently secure buffs/ganks/counter jungling that it sometimes in high level play can be terrifying.

Not utilizing gold drives me crazy. People who do not understand the importance of gold spending can click this link to understand a lvl 1 Xin with full build can beat a lvl 18 Xin with no items. https://youtu.be/BNZCQVMta_4?t=2m40s

Personally I always rush item 3070 and sometimes get 2x item 1056 as Cassiopeia. Most of the time I don't even need to upgrade it until late game or I upgrade it when it's full since I just beat face without it.

Never get item 3027 on Cass... not good, not worth.

Drekavil1 votes

I understand the double dorans, and tear can be utilized efficently on Cass due to her E spam if you poison a target. I wouldn't get a RoA on Cass, but rather double dorans -> morello or echo depending on my lane.

Try finishing it first and see if you feel like you do more damage/better mid game. I have destroyed many mids who don't finish tear first because they've basically spent 720 gold for 20+ minutes.n't

Just don't understand the Tear on people if they don't 1. Build it into AA first to maximize mana usage/ap gain. 2. More than 2 mana regen items (When I see tear + morello + athenes, doesn't make sense)

Narvuntien1 votes

I build Tear on Ashe... well it sacrifices mid game for late game burst... there are too many dashes and flashes in league now an assasin will jump on you and destory you before you get more than the single auto off. better make that auto count.

with the Muramana, Statik Shiv and Ashe passive you do one hell of a crit with that first attack, then you continue to wail on the opponent with super damagaging attacks.

It replaces my LW against squishy assasin teams.. but I kinda got addicted to building it so I build it all the time in normal games because I enjoy it. Particular if I get behind in lane, I can't match my opponents mid game it is better for me to go into hardcore farm mode then try to jump them in the late game with the extra power boost.

I have learnt you don't buy the tear first you need the damage first then the tear with Ashe's Q you stack that tear very fast.

Drekavil1 votes

I'll add to my comment that ashe is an exception. Ashe isn't played as much as she used to be, and ADC build's are so different atm due to the gold cost of items, higher level players are trying to utilize their items even more; Just for god sake don't finish boots first as ADC

Tear gives you the chance to start building towards that heavy amount of AP and Nice shield a little bit faster in lane before you can build it into AA, so it is the best item to have for late game, but are you willing to accept your early/mid will suffer, even more depending on enemy team damage spikes, especially in a game where there are 24 assassin and 6 bans?
