Penalty Box Idea
So I've been thinking about this for awhile now. LoL is a fun game, but what isn't fun? Dealing with the number of absolutely toxic players who are able to get away with their unsportsmanlike behavior since it's hard to really pick out and punish them for it. There is no real full proof way to deal with toxic players, but here is an idea that might be able to help some. (Granted I'm not incredibly aware of how things work in the background)
What if there was some sort of penalty box system put into place? The basic gist of the idea is this:
-
After a certain number of offenses, players that have consistently toxic behavior would be marked as being in the "penalty box". What this would mean is that they would be barred from entering games with players not under the penalty box status.
-
Players with the "penalty box" status would be separated from all the other unpenalized players, meaning the only players they would be able to enter games with would be other players in the penalty box. In effect, this quarantines the toxic players to only being able to play with other toxic players until their time in the penalty box is up.
-
In addition to only being able to play with other penalty box players. those in the penalty box would also be barred from ranked matches and from playing with anyone that isn't in the penalty box until they leave the penalty box. This would hopefully deter players from unsportsmanlike behavior while still allowing them to play most of the game modes, albeit with limitations.
-
After a certain time duration, those in the penalty box would be able to leave the penalty box and enter the normal queues again. This time duration would depend on how many offenses they have and each time they get put in the penalty box, the amount of time spent in the penalty box would grow longer. Here is an example...
- Toxic Player A has been reported in 5 successive games.
- They are now marked with the "penalty box" status for 1 week. They are unable to participate in ranked queues and unable to participate with players that aren't in the penalty box. 3A) If no further offenses - They go back to the normal queue and ranked matches are once again enabled for them. 3B) If they continue to display toxic behavior - an additional week is added onto their penalty box time (to a maximum of 4 weeks). 4B) For every 5 successive offenses, the penalty box time also starts over.
The whole idea here is to remove those who choose to consistently display a lack of sportsmanship from play with those who don't want to be around their toxic behavior. Those in the penalty box would be only allowed to play with other toxic players in the box until they improve their behavior and would be stuck there for longer and longer each time they continue to cause problems. Also removing their ability to participate in ranked matches would serve as a deterrent to using bad behavior, making it a privilege to participate only granted to players that don't neglect the code of conduct. With that, you pretty much also eliminate the problem of banning players who in many cases probably spent real money on in game stuff as they'd still be able to play the game, though they'd be locked out of certain features until their behavior improves. For the players that like to be obnoxious and awful, they might even find a better home in the penalty box where they could trash talk, grief and generally be toxic to their heart's content while this would lock them away from the general player base who in most cases wouldn't want to participate with those sorts of players.
I don't expect everyone to agree or this idea to really be considered, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway. I know things in the background are far more complicated and would require a lot more consideration too. But maybe, just maybe this could help clear much of the league community of the players that choose to make this game a bad experience.
