Elo Hell is a VERY Real Thing

AiMBøT··8 votes·1,585 views

I know many people don't agree with the notion that elo hell is a real place. However, I believe that it is extremely real. For example, I play at a Silver level (S4). Now, how many games have you been in where you are down maybe 5 kills, and the jungler INSIST on challenging the next dragon when the other team is up 2 dragons? In my experience, there are many scenarios that pop up where NOT challenging the dragon and pushing out mid lane for an inner turret or at least getting mid lane pressure would make more sense. However, if everyone else goes in and challenges the dragon and get wiped and you don't, then you are "reported for not working as a team" or raging ensues. This is my main point. Even if you or you and another person on your team decide that getting mid pressure would be way more beneficial than picking a losing dragon fight, you are still held back by the majority of the team that decides to dive in and give the other team another 3 kills. So there are really two options in that situation: either you ignore them and attempt to get mid pressure, or you dive in with the rest of the team (because of the raging or whatever that you want to avoid if you don't) and hope for the best. This is why I think that elo hell is real. Because even if you are thinking at a higher level and the big picture of the game, there could be a majority of your team that just wants to fight a losing fight and takes you down with them. It is nearly impossible to convince them otherwise. I don't like the fact that a team can drag you down that hard or force you into a losing fight, even if you know that it isn't in the best interest of the long-term game. Let me know what you guys think.

If elo hell is so real, then the enemy has tons of idiots as well right? The win-rate of summoners rift is 100%, one team always wins, your saying games are impossible to win in this elo, yet the enemy just did that.

dEAdbUs1 votes

You're not right. Rarely people have winrate higher than 60%.

100/20 + 2 = 7. You need at least 7 wins to get next division. 7 / 60 * 100 = 11-12 games to get next division with 60% winrate.

But you can have winstreaks and losing streaks. Because its not necessary that you will have 60% winrate in every moment of time. One day you can have 100% winrated, another you can have 100% loserate.

Same time moving up is harder - because there you'll have promo, while for falling there is no promotion. Easy to fall, hard to grow.

Same time some champions are easy to carry soloQ, some harder (they have less impact even if snowballed). If you're maining bad champions, you'll probably have less winrate.

So elohell exists. People who re not believing in it, just not good with math.

Mathlete8642 votes

I mean that LoL is a 0-sum game. Meaning one team wins every time. If elo-hell is real, then no one would win.

dEAdbUs1 votes

Statistically 50% winrate means that nobody wins. You win one game, lost another - you 're staying on same place.

Your assumption is that people who are BETTER than what they seem maintain a 50% win/loss despite them being superior. First off, that premise is so ridiculously flawed its not even funny. People are not robots; they cannot be expected to perform to the EXACT same level every single game. That's why chess players have different performance elos; sometimes they play worse than their elo suggests. Second, what the fuck does math have to do with elo hell? The whole "elo hell" notion is them being held back by their teammates even though they should be placed higher. Mathematically, if you ARE better, you have a 40% chance of getting a terrible teammate, while the other team has a 50% chance. Last time I checked, 50>40 so if you are indeed better you should be winning just based on the large numbers.

Elo hell is real.

It's a psychological phenomenon caused by players who think they're better than the 9 other players in the game enough to advance to a higher bracket, but aren't able to for one reason or another. In most cases that player might be better at certain phases in the game then his team and consistently sees mistakes and flaws his team mates make causing him to feel superior. In reality those players are lacking in a different regard that prevents them from being able to win at a high enough percentage to move upwards.

I don't care if you're a laning god, teamfight monster, rotation king, lord of Objectives, The all seeing Eye of Map awareness, or The General.

If you're not consistently winning, your doing something to keep you there. Don't point out "but muh team mates!" those games are just as common as your teammates carrying your ass by going 10-0 in laning phase, you just don't remember those because you weren't angry those games. Emotional memory is very powerful.

Very good point, but I still disagree to an extent. I have MANY MANY more games with feeders and afk's then 10-0 carries. Last week when I got up to S2, I lost 15 games (13/15) 8 of those were with an AFK at least 3 more were trolls (who mid or feed, ok two mid then, alright double jungle no mid). In the other games with someone who refused to accept a situation like they could not duel Riven and gave her 8 kills in 15 minutes trying to beat her head on every time or diving her, chasing etc.

Now I KNOW I need to work on my game, but I honestly believe, with MUCH objective thought put into it, that I can play at a higher level than where I am (currently S4 after another demotion last night) I am NOT Plat, or even a high gold, but it's hard to improve when most of your games you are compensating for others.

I get your point though, I excel in teamfights and objective pressure, while my laning is "ok" and my biggest weakness is probably greed (or losing patience with teammates, they mate have made a mistake, but getting frustrated doesn't help) or emotional (like getting into a tilt after a couple bad games when I should probably just stop) but if I weigh up the times I messed up or actually was detrimental, and look at my actual KDA or win rate, it's not balanced. I could say I am performing at 60% if I give a low estimate based on potential bias, but my win rate is closer to 40%. (I mean, I mess up or do things I should 40% or less of the time, obviously I can't say I am 60% of the way to Challenger skill, or a win lane 60% of the time, because winning lane is not winning game) but I mean I over extend, chase instead of ignore, try to save an ally that I KNOW is dead, something like 40% of the time.

So maybe I deserve silver until I improve this, but what I am trying to say, is that when you are constantly being bombarded by poor decisions and flame, and afks, and feeding, and dragon contesting that simply MAKES NO SENSE or someone farming jungle while you are "RIGHT NEXT TO THEM" (like other side of brush or wall) equally trading an enemy, but their team comes from half way across the map while you still haven't responded. It's hard to work on your own weaknesses, when you're always compensating for others.

I can honestly say, I win more games when I play BAD (by my standard) then when I play well (though I main support so that can still make sense) when I am doing well, I find myself compensating for others too much. whereas when I lose my lane, build the wrong item, even have wrong runes/masteries, my team plays better and I just merrily get carried.

I guess put simply, I am saying I don't think I am GREAT, just better than where I am. And I rarely think I am better than all 9 other players, just 3 members of my team that made the game SO hard. I've had opponents who are fundamentally bad, but get ahead because i Have team mates who are worse. But I don't go around thinking "I am the best one, why am i losing" just why is my team weaker than theirs "as a whole" I often feel like I have 5 silver 4-3 vs silver 1 to gold players. I see enemy teams coordinate so well or have great team composition. Whereas all of my games is first pick Kata or Zed, unless I first pick and go support, and then they Zed or Yasuo anyway, even if they are picking into a counter. I started to first pick mid just to avoid letting them, but that's what starts the problem imo, but at least I try to pick champs that are not piss easy to counter, or can swap to different lanes. I love going "mid lulu" then after a few people have picked, then I say "actually, support" just so team composition stands a chance. But that only works when the next two picks have already agreed to go top/jungle or adc

5th Layer (1200-1500 ELO Normal, 1200-1400 Ranked)

It's deep and dark and the flickering piles of burning Evelyns/Jax are everywhere. It smells like the charred bodies of one thousand minions all mixed with excrement. Needless to say it's not a pleasant place to be.

This is the first major "Cutoff Point" Essentially where those champions you have been enjoying for the first 1200 or so ELO become... bad... Evelynn, Jax, Alistar, Urgot... if you pick these guys you get to deal with an entire team *****ing at you, an entire team blaming you and chances are you won't do too hot in the first place. This is where teamwork really starts, and this is where team composition starts mattering. You can't just solo push and win the game with Yi anymore, you have to help your allies too.

Of course you will still be blamed for the loss, or feeding or whatever else. Technically this is the range of "Tryhards" where if you screw up you're going to be reported, if you yell at them for reporting you, you're going to be reported and then banned, if you yell at riot for banning you they nerf your favorite champion to the ground and laugh. That or Guinsoo trolls you and you become the laughingstock of the community for the day. Usually riot enjoys strategically linking the chat logs with the 14+ comments about your mother from the enemy team cut off, and your chat telling them that their mother's niece is a hooker (which happens to be a fact) in plain view.

"This can't be that bad" you say to yourself, but it is. You're going to do badly and you're going to get reported for it and chances are you're going to yell at someone who is yelling at you and bad things will happen. This is pretty much where the most players are "Banned" from, at-least the ones who don't spam allchat with racial slurs.

Games don't end very well here, you're either happy that your team did well and won, or depressed because you lost for some stupid reason. Games here can leave you in a VERY sour mood, in which you will take out your anger on someone else, propagating the process.

Elo Hell is all a frame of mind. It is where you are stuck at a ranking by your own inability to improve, so you start to blame your teammates, which causes you to lose more games, which causes you to blame your teammates. Repeat Ad Nauseum.

tl;dr This

Drunk Rummate2 votes

zzzz I feel like this has been said so many times but I guess I'll repeat it for you.

You are the one common denominator in every game you play. If you play above average then there's a 4/9 chance that you will have bad players or an AFK and there's a 5/9 chance that the enemy team will. Probability is on your side so over a large number of games you will gain ELO if you perform above the average at your rank. Statistics do not lie. ELO hell is a myth.

Stats do not lie huh? But they can be manipulated like crazy:

Let's say average for your elo is 50% you should only need to consistently perform above 50% (51% +) in order to get out of Elo said elo

4/9 u have bad player or afk, 5 / 9 chance for the enemy, ok ok, so far so good

but you need to win 2/3 games in order to go up, not 2 / 4

so if you play at 51% all the time, statistically you should "slowly" move up something like + - + - + + - + - + - + - + etc etc the double + is your 1% above average but you if you have an afk or feeder in 10% of games, your 51% becomes a 41%

ok, ok, but you still have better odds than your opponent right? But, aren't they in elo hell too?

Well, you shouldn't be aiming for 51%, but anywhere below 60% is not good enough, except... If you are at 61% which is the equivalent of 51% then you will still climb SO SLOW that the stress and aggrevation generated is bound to affect you, most people argue, don't play multiple games in a row, it's not skill but mentality holding you back, but if you only play on weekends for example, you might smack out a bunch of games, and get frustrated, reducing your 51% even further, making YOU the 10% of bad players, afk, ragers, etc. So now you are at 41%. So, you need to be at 71% just to balance out, and you will never really climb, or it'll take AGEs maintaining your tilt's and bad experiences and so on.

If you want to jump out of Silver (which is where most people seem to agree Elo hell is) you need to be playing at around 80% to avoid the detriments of the below. So, while you are certainly NOT a plat + player, you can be above your elo by what most would agree is a significant amount, and still struggle to advance.

Avoid playing multiple games (especially after a loss) and maintain a good attitude (someone else said "don't become what you hate") these seem to be the key to getting out of Elo hell, not skill level.

Yes, if you are plat+ level, you will climb out much easier (but probably still find it annoying) and if you are challenger you can probably carry 1 v 5 with mechanics and game knowledge alone, but if you are Gold or low plat/high silver, you will be stuck until you drastically improve (which is hard since your opponents are not even that strong either) or you change your state of mind

Elo hell is REAL, but not unavoidable, my short definition is: "The area in which the skill you need to get out, is considerably greater than the skill of the actual average player"

It is NOT impossible, it is NOT unbeatable, and it is still the MINORITY of players who truly experience it (as opposed to almost all Silvers who claim to be in it) It does NOT apply to bronze, where one skilled champ CAN actually win the game alone, and it becomes less relevant the higher you get, because it really is about the "mentality" of lower players, and the excuse that they use for not improving their skills.

I might be bias, I consider that often, but I feel like I am in Elo hell because I was playing "Better" last year when I was gold in plat promos, but have actually gotten lazy or less efficient because my opponents are rarely challenging, and games are all about getting your team to work together (who to follow, when to lead) and not about the mechanics of individual lanes or players (except occasionally when I play against a wtf champ that completely owns me) I Know those guys exist, but I don't think i'll ever play like them until I can consistently play against them. It's hard to reach 4th grade class with 2nd grade lessons plans

Statistics cant say long this will take to grow with only 1/9 better chances.

If you losing 4 games and winning 5, while you need at least 7 pure wins to get next div, that means you need 9*7=63 games to get next div.

63*5=315 games to get next tier. And only if you'll be lucky enough, because losing streaks dropping mmr pretty hard and you will need more than 7 after that.

Android Cowboy2 votes

ALSO purely by VOLUME the lower tiers have more issues, we're the bottom 97% of the player base, people.

"I hardly ever see afk. I hardly ever see ragers. I hardly ever see XXXXX." Of course you don't see that at the same amounts we do down at the bottom of the barrel. MATH MUCH ?

I challenge.... no, I DEFY any high level player to really start off in b5, drop their ELO then try and crawl out.

You won't know what to do with yourself if you run into HALF what us B5 regulars put up with daily.

ELO hell champion select is like hostage negotiation, the majority of your matches. You have to be part saint, part social worker just to have half a chance of getting out of there with even part of a team who can or actually wants to win.

You upper tiers needs a serious reality check.

LET THEM EAT CAKE, sayeth the upper tiers....

haven't been in b5 but was in the real cesspool of silver 5 starting this season because i tanked promos from gold 1. i got into gold within a week and now am plat. btw, you think b5 is bad, wait till you get to low plat. the trolls in plat 5 0lp will make your promos a living hell.

dEAdbUs1 votes

Wow, what champions you played and how many games per day?

BluePolarizer1 votes

5 games per day back in January. I was then stuck at gold 1 for 3 months, no joke, which shows you how trolly plat 5 0 LP is and how big the knowledge gap between gold and plat is. I had to relearn alot of strategies on my climb.

Champs: MasterYi Hecarim Quinn JarvanIV Maokai

Most games I played I was fed enough to at least 1v3 and at least be able to run away, even as support Maokai, because no one has any map awareness, chase kills for no reason (then die to ambushes in the jungle) and don't know how to rotate around the map. They also have no idea of objective values, such as they're taking 2nd dragon as 5 while I solo take their mid turret and top takes top inner. There's nothing magical about the champs I picked - I still pick mostly the same champs in my current games in plat.

Protip: if you get good at Shyvana (doesn't matter top or jungle), you will escape bronze/silver, not because Shyvana is OP, but because Shyvana relies on knowledge of rotations, map awareness, objective values, who you can kill and who you can't, and being extremely good at farming both jungle and lane at the same time to win. Learn these things, and you are better than most silvers/bronzes.

My D1 brother played couple times on my Gold 3 acc. He said Gold is uncarriable. If diamonds can't carry that...

Zerid1 votes

Elo is a real thing. But really its because the majority of players are in bronze silver. Silver and Bronze will have more afk/rage quits in 100 games compared to Gold on up. Why... Dunno but that's why its elo hell.

Team strategies rarely work its more about playing a certain champion pool to get out of it. So if you play jungle but don't know how to play reksai, gragas, nunu, and sejuani then you will stay in silver. You just need to hop on the "needs a nerf" champion. I play j4 to get out of silver to gold, they then nerfed him so now I'm in Gold 4. Think more about champ's then team strategies.

no one can carry alone (at least usually), but it takes only 1 person to throw.

this makes a climb from low ranks, even if youre personally far above your elo range a crawl. dont get me wrong. youre bound to winn more games than you lose eventually. but youre not gonna compensate for that one jackass who thinks hes a bigshot, tries to repeatedly pull off a needless risky play, fails and throws your team the game.

this is gonna make your progress always very slow.

the only advice i can give you. play nasus. silvers dont know how to deal with nasus for multiple reasons. they dont know how to deal with him early, and they dont know how to close out games and always drag them out, even if you lose lane. you will more often than not get insanely farmed and essentially 1v5 lategame. especially since no one in that elo range peels. you should be able to walk through to the carry most of the time and kill him with 3 q's.

That range of MMR (high bronze- low silver) is probably the worst, as it's where Riot sends a lot of players when they first start placements or first get placed. As such, most matches are usually less well-matched than they should be, with a lot of the players actually belonging in a different MMR.

MacDthree1 votes

I never really played much ranked, or cared about my rank in general. Last season I played my first 10 games or whatever and got into silver 2. I found my games typically more fun as I didn't seem to get AS MANY ragers and afk's as I did in unranked normals .
This season, I decided to play ranked again - but a friend of mine who isn't that great wanted to try and rank too. I figured, eh - I don't really care about ranks. Even if I get into a low position, I can climb back out. Sure enough, with his 3/17, 5/10 self I ended up in Bronze 4.
NOW i care. I also now believe in Elo Hell. I am not a bad player, and I can NOT climb out. I have seriously had people load into a game, go "lol ranked is for fegs" and dc.... What. I can win 3 games in a row, seeing 20+ LP for each win. Then go 18-1-7 but lose, and be punished for an equal amount of LP. It wasn't even my fault we lost, I couldn't do anything to help, and now it's like that 3rd win never even happened.

Elo hell is real, but not in the sense that people claim. In Bronze through low Gold, Elo hell is those few bad games (sometimes in a row) where you get poor players. AFKs, trolls, intentional feeders, unintentional feeders, ragers, etc. They exist, they will be in your games. They will cause losses. That's Elo Hell.

But on the flip side, not every game will have them. I made a thread once, I forget if it was here or in GD, about how I played about 7 promo games in a row. My duo was in promos, then I was, then he was again. Something like that. Now, everyone who reads Boards knows it's impossible to wins promos. You'll always, 100% time, get a player who wants you to lose... See where I'm going with this? Of those 7 promo games, plus 3 more I played this past weekend, not one had an AFK, rager, or intentional feeder.

I'll be honest, not every game was perfect. Not every game was won. But all promos were successful.

So the trick to getting out of Elo Hell? Well, there are a few:

  1. Keep playing. Toxicity is at an all time low. Or so Rito says. If this is true, you should get more good teams than bad. If this isn't true, you'll still get your fair share of good teams eventually. That, and you can't win if you don't play. You also can't win without losing here and there.
  2. Take breaks after a loss or two. Losing streaks happen because it's hard to get off tilt.
  3. Worry about your own mistakes, not anyone else's. Even in the perfect 20-0 game where you carried everyone else's sorry ass, you made a mistake somewhere. Find it, and learn from it.
  4. Learn the balance between being a team player, and being selfish. League is a team game. But soloq, especially ranked, is selfish. Kinda an oxymoron. You have to play for yourself, so you can then play for the team. Example: you're top and you lost lane/tower. So you tell your team not to teamfight until you catch up. You farm a few waves, then Teleport into a fight they started anyway. You did your best to catch up, then you joined the team for a 5v5 instead of a 4v5. Then you farm more and finish a core item. Selfish gameplay to get yourself back into the game, which then allows you to contribute to the team effort.
  5. Don't be what you hate. No one wants the salty teammate. No one wants the feeder. Don't emulate that behavior then. Nightblue said it best on stream the other day. Paraphrasing: You don't know your teammates, you don't know the enemy team. There are 4 chances to get a toxic player on your team, but 5 on the other.

i dont think you actually get permanently stuck in elo hell.

but it is a bracket where teamwork doesnt exist, adn everyone thinks hes the big shot whos gonna make the play that wins the game. and they usually fail at it.

which causes advancement to be incredibly slow.

see. a good player actually tries to work with his team and create some sort of synergy between champions. you try to execute ability combos with other players in your team. know which target to peel for, and when you can dive. but if the rest of your team doesnt know what the fuck youre trying to do, a lot of your skills go to waste.

try playing ad carry in silver and you will understand why a lot of people think theyre underpowered or too weak. when theyre the most batshit overpowered class in the game.

IMO elo hell only exists in small sample sizes. Play enough games and you will end up where you deserve to be. Unfortunately for most people that sample size is large enough that many players don't reach it. This leads to unlucky streaks with shitty teams having a bigger impact.

Pardon my french but you're a fucking idiot if you are trying to tell me the level of idiots/leavers/ragers/afk'ers/kiddies is the same among all tiers. Seriously, take some blood thinners because you have a blood clot in your brain that is affecting its judgement center.

And you're an idiot for not being able to comprehend what he was saying.

He's saying it's just as likely for the enemy team to have as many "idiots/leavers/ragers/afk'ers/kiddies" as you're team. In fact, the other team should have a HIGHER chance to have those players than you're team, considering you're so good and a gift to the game.

Every tier you move up the ratio of retards to players who WANT to be team players skews geometrically towards the better and the reverse as you go down... like a pyramid. YOU don't understand.

Please point out where I said I am an awesome player... because I never said that.... I never even said a tier I think I belong in....

Try warding a little more. If you're midlane and your average is 10 wards a minute for a game that usually lasts anywhere between 20-40 minutes on average, you need to step up your game.

Upgrade your trinket.

Buy wards, yes spend gold on wards pre level 9. Don't rely on your trinket, it's too easy for junglers to avoid.

I good way to see it (and this comes from experience cause I just climbed out of bronze... (Alf accounts ftw)) is like this, would your team have won if you were there? If you know it was a bad call, did you spam danger? If you really want to make a difference play smart.

I just lost a game at diamond cause we had a terrible vayne but even though we lost, we still won 3 teamfights without vayne against a fed ashe. Long as I keep things like that up, I know I'm doing better.

HAHAHA another thing I love about ELO hell is that most all the nice players aren't in bronze, they moved up... well, mostly. I still run into a civil person from time to time, but they're usually just hitting lvl 30 and getting their Welcome To The Jungle. All the nicey-nice advice these uppers are trying to drop means nothing in our tier. They would be really helpful in a truly competitive, level playing field, but that ain't bronze. Gnar LET THEM EAT CAKE.
