Why does Nasus's w slow for almost as much as thresh's ult? not to mention the attack speed reduction and the fact that its a point and click ability.

Because it is Nasus's only way of getting onto someone. Darius has a pull (as well as silly Cleaver movespeed for a long time after aaing a minion once), Illaoi can pull souls out of her target to attack, has a slow built into that, and a short range gap closer, Morde has a strong movespeed buff towards allies, etc. etc.

Nasus doesn't have any of that. He has one movespeed slow to get onto targets. It is single target so he can only get to a single enemy at a time, and the AS slow exists as his main tool for surviving ADC shred as a juggernaut. His ult resistances are mostly based around being near enemies which means it doesn't help much vs ranged champs, hence the AS slow so they can't orb walk away from him as well and gives him some form of surivability against him.

His counterplay exists in the fact that he has pretty pitiful AOE damage/lockdown meaning that you need to bring multiple people to fight him late game and kite him out.
