As a new player, playing unfamiliar enemies is a pain! Here's my suggestion to reduce headaches.

Coming from Dota, it's really hard to be stuck with having no clue what all the characters are capable of all over again. The problem is, I have to either deal with trying to figure out the enemies' abilities by eye, or I have to tab out of the game and leave my team on their own while I look up the champ's abilities.

Dota had a feature where you could just click on an enemy hero(champ) and read their abilities by mousing over them, just like you were controlling that hero. All it told you was the regular description and the stats per level, it wouldn't tell you the enemy's actual level. So there was no special info you could get through it, just the same things you could get out of a wiki page without the hassle. I made a little mockup of how this could look in-game if a similar feature was implemented into League. (I couldn't actually show the skill tooltip, because I don't have Nasus. A singleplayer bot match to test drive champs you don't own would be nice!)

Here's an example of how the enemy ability information is presented in Dota:

The information is presented just like if you were playing the hero, except you don't get to see their skill level. No more information than a wiki would give you, but it's a huge help for new players like me. (Or veteran players who are up against a new hero!)

I have no problem with this even if its implemented Via using TAB. Currently there's some info from Death recap that I think gets underused. I would recommend hitting up lol wiki and doing a once over on every champ, and use the free time in lobby and load screen to give your self a refresher on any champ you feel fuzzy on before game starts.

oh, the Death recap. Memories of being killed by the enemy Olaf's flash, while he had ghost/smite

Yea man, Thankfully riot nerfed the damage on that. Some hilarious bugs in d recap over the years. Riot should give it a face lift still, not as useful as it could be.

actually a few months ago I used a tool to record my games. It was freeware, but damn it was good. Actually useful recap, a small indicator for ping before getting into a queue and a bunch of stuff like that, as well as replays. It was actually funny that some fans were making these stuff for free, while the actual company never really bothered to make them properly. To be fair to RIOT things have changed now, but damn fun times

I'm a veteran player and I still do not know all champs and their abilities.

Why hasn't this been made yet? Dota is less popular but forever ahead of league in ease of access to players. (They had game replays since day one) Get with the meta riot.

That's actually a pretty cool idea, they just probably didn't think about it and thus didn't spare any development room for it.

Could be cool, even as a locked camera player(I unlock when needed and lock it back but I think I'm stilled considered to be a locked camera player) I think this would be simple to do without adding too much clutter.

Although I think it should be in the upper left corner with their normal info box, cause I do like to see my mana when clicking on enemies several times a game. Sorry if I made it harder to do but I don't like losing my personal resource information to see an enemy's skills.

Although for spectator mode, let it be as you said.

Edit: Could have the champion portrait itself smaller then the Passive beside or under the portrait for a player to mouse over,

Q, W, E, and R can be to the right side of the information in the upper left corner.

That way all 5 things are given for a player as long as they mouse over to see what it is, AND wouldn't obscure vision in a live game.

As I also said, during spectator it can go exactly how you shown.

Seems like a pain in the ass when you could just Google search their wiki page during loading or champion select.

Covering your own HUD just to see theirs has a multitude of problems. There's not enough space elsewhere.

EcchiOtakuTM2 votes

Actually there is enough space in the upper left with normal info if it were slightly redesigned to show skills too

Like just have the champion portrait smaller then the P to the right of the champ portrait, Q+W under, E+R under Q+W

This way it's there but you can just scroll over at your own digression without sacrificing anything else. If more view is needed maybe Q, W, E, and R can be to the right side of the champ info in the upper left corner, but it wouldn't take away as much visual info as the poster's example has.

I wish I could make an image to represent what I mean, but I do hope I'm understood....

you know that when you die there is a death recap that tells you point by point what killed you including mouse overs that tells about the abilities used to kill you and tips and tricks to avoid them so that the incident doesn't repeat itself right? no? I'm the only one that knows this... ok... I will go back to the corner and accept my fate.

yeah it's very good for revealing very obscure mechanics too like dealing 500 magic damage with Ashe's E.

I would encourage any feature that allows you to learn about an enemy other than "trial and error" in games you play aginst them! Plus anything that helps new players gets my support i want more of my friends to pick league up.

may I say one thing? i tried dota, i give up, is just very, very hard. how people can carry in that game?

Any way, there's already a system on place to tell you about the opponents skills. it's called:

Death Recap.

but is the most bug heavy feature even being present in a very famous with very large community with big tournaments ever.

so... so far what I have done is just do a very quick look on the wiki when i face a new enemy. however, I have played league game for about one year now, And I know most of the abilities (tip, they are very similar). I would play smite more, and try to learn how to play it (is seems more easy to me that Dota 2 is) but... my internet is to unstable for smite. on smite if you get one DC you are gone for good. so i don't remember how smite give you that info.

in that note, I still puzzled about how do you play Dota and carry the game. is very similar to League, but is just to different.

Atanchan1 votes

It's actually waaaaaaaay easier to carry ( as in, be a complete MVP and dominate the game through mostly your own power ) in DOTA than in League, since an individual's snowballing is far less restricted comparatively. The reason why it might seem hard is likely due to a combination of not knowing what to build ( therefore not snowballing as hard as you can, through aiming for good items for your hero that also shutdown the enemies aka. BKB on practically every right-clicker when against a team that didn't go five carry ) and just not choosing good heroes for carrying ( practically every hero can carry the game this way, but some are far better than it at others and therefore are far more suited to do it at low skill levels - not to mention, sometimes a hero's main benefit is completely irrelevant at low levels, like Night Stalker being able to deny vision really hard when nobody's buying wards in the first place ). And that's all before factoring in that an enemy might start carrying their team before you have a chance to go off, which could be the main obstacle.

That all said, one major roadblock for carrying is hitting buildings. If you can't push your advantage hard enough to hit buildings or get an ally in position to do it for you, then the fact that the map has far more sources of income means that the enemy team can close the advantage even if they're unable to take straight-on fights.

Nickssaa1 votes

There is more to it though. While snowballing is less restrictive, snowballing is a lot harder. In league, if you die to your lane opponent twice, the enemy is already considered to be snowballing, and gets a huge powerspike. In Dota, u need around 5 kills to reach the same effect, and they still can be easily shut down.

Tin of sardines1 votes

so, is just that? no outplay involved?... cool... i gonna try to do what you said.

Atanchan1 votes

You still need to start your snowball first, mind, and before you're scaling far above your opponents can still outrotate you and your team and take you down with a numbers advantage. And if you just flat-out misplay, well, sheer advantage isn't always going to save you.

And of course, if the enemy team has a way to keep you from hitting buildings, then that can provide them the opportunity to lower your advantage. It's kind of why counterpicks are so much more valuable in DOTA - carrying can give you an incredible distance in power, yes, but if the enemy team has the tools to weaken or suppress your tools, their ability to fight against that power is so much higher.

yeah i enjoyed this when i played dota since i also had no idea what shit did. if you have clicked on a enemy champion and then press Q for example does it still make your champions ability to trigger? if it does i have no issues with this if it doesn't i think it would fuck some people up that like to spam click shit.

Nickssaa1 votes

Ya, using an ability or attack while you clicked on a non controled unit switches the HUD to your hero

Acheron161 votes

I've been playing this game since season 3 and I can say that I know everyone's abilities.

But I wont deny that a new player will be massively overwhelmed when playing a new or unknown champion, they have no way to learn their kit with basically dying once.

And even then, some ults are very unclear for first timers: Taric/ Karthus ult: wtf is this light coming from the sky; Kindred ult: wtf, why wont they die!? Blitzcrank ult passive: why are there random lightning bolts striking some minions?
