The Bonetooth Necklace Problem

As we are in preseason, where a ton of changes happen pretty much every single patch, we try to solve problems, get rid of confusing patterns and so on. We have to remember there will be not enough time to solve problems in the future, and some still linger, despite the efforts to get rid of them.

item 3417 is one of those problems.

You may ask 'Why is BTN a problem?'. There are multiple answers.

It occupies a trinket slot

To some, it makes Rengar innately stronger, because he is the only champion in the game to actually gain more than the active of a trinket. While it is true, it also poses a problem - trinkets with actives are a system designed to be used by every champion in the game, and they 'level up' after certain conditions are met - level 9 and paying 475 gold, respectively. Rengar has it different - if he wants his kit to reach its maximum potential, he HAS TO use item 3417 . And that requires kills + assists. That translates to not having the utility that 121 (soon to be 122) other champions would have once they hit level 9, even if they did poorly earlier in the game. I've had games where I legitimately never hit 20 stacks. Have fun not being able to sweep that pesky Akali shroud because you aren't level 9 at 20 stacks yet. Not to mention not having the basic level 9 utility because you didn't snowball hard. Or the other way around. Getting utility every other champion in the game would have at level 9 as early as level 6, because you just rolled everything. Not cool.

It is confusing

It is never mentioned anywhere. Not mentioned in his ability videos, not mentioned in his tips&tricks. A new player who wants to try Rengar out for the first time gets in the game and notices he has not 3, but 6 trinkets to choose from for some reason. Why is it so? Nobody said anything about new trinkets. Not to mention these toothy things stack!

item 3417 also is screwed up in terms of updating tooltips. Every other champion in the game will have their ability tooltips updated once they get some new effect in their abilities (bar Syndra and Cassiopeia, but they have tooltip passives). I know, it is mostly basic math, but it would be awesome if it just updated itself. Which is pretty much not possible with the current system: item 3166 item 3405 item 3411 item 3417 item 3450
ALL DO THE SAME STUFF OUTSIDE OF THEIR ACTIVES (or lack thereof). But it still is a messy system. 5 different items. Not to mention the head...

Head of Kha'Zix

Yet another puzzling thing. Another upgrade to 5 trinkets. It grants extremely long vision range in bushes, awesome. But why only in bushes? Why not in stealth, where Rengar's passive is ready as well? My question towards anyone who knows is: Can you swap the item 3175 for a different trinket while still retaining the head? I have played over 400 games with reworked Rengar and still am afraid of losing it, just because the icon is awesome.

Optimal usage makes you unable to feed poros

Yep. Poor poros, you won't get that cookie this time. Or any other time Rengar appears because apparently, he can't be nice towards poros.

THE BTN-BUFF WAS PRESENT IN ASCENSION Why can't we just switch to that system and make sure Rengar doesn't feel out of place with different trinkets than every other champion in the game? BTN not being a passive was understandable back in the days of it occupying an item slot, but nowadays it's pretty much an additional passive that is not mentioned outside of the item shop.

Having it a buff would also enable you to use the old icons of BTN, which were the pinnacle of sexiness. Please, consider that?

It should stay a trinket. You can rely on your teammates for some things, it is a team based game.

Rengar is in no way a weak champion so I don't think this warrants any attention, I've always thought it was a cool mechanic and I'm fine with it taking up the trinket slot.

I do agree with your logic regarding Rengar, however I'd say there are two simple solutions for the current necklace issues and those are: a) Make it as a passive buff and force people to use normal trinkets and b) have two ways of updgrading trinkets either lvl 9+475 gold or 20 stacks. Also if the fix was #2, Rengar shouldn't be able to buy regular trinkets as the poster above wrote it does cause certain ammount of confusion among new players.

Here's a suggestion:

Let's make Rengar's Boontooth necklace into a second innate passive, because having two passives is a current trend now.

Guys but I wanted to ask more thing about Reagar's kit : do you think, now that R has a longer cd, without m. speed if you do not run towards the enemy, without charging staks in stealth and with the warning signal ( range 1250), you still need the delay of 3 sec for the activation ??? All in all it is a final ...... And then another thing: Have you noticed that if rengar uses the R, although this is not activated for the famous 3 sec of delay, not only goes in cd, but the player must wait for the unfolding of the whole final with the phase of stealth and then the phase of m speed with stacks and only after all ,the final (about 12-13 sec after the death) goes in cd. And when we respawn we don't have 5 stacks........ Many final, if interrupted before the activation, do not go in cd and Rengar's R isn't like Shaco's q, a blink, You just need a pink or a red trinket to see him, like Akali.
