Somebody explain Grades (How isn't this S?)

Does the grade system not take role into play? Was I supposed to take the farm from Cait instead of guarding her as she farmed safely into late game? Should I have been kill stealing mid to late to further my score instead of helping my team get kills after I was fed (started 8-0-2). This makes zero sense at all. As a tank jungler you can't have a much better game.

You got an A+ so things were close.

Theres a lot more than just kda/cs that goes into rank though, which is commonly why people are 'wtf why didn't I get an S' and 'wtf how did that get an S?!?' in threads about grades.

Kill participation, objective participation, warding, and ward clearing are a handful of other things known to have an impact on grade that aren't kda/cs directly, and theres probably other factors as well.

It's not that you necessarily get to grab a sightstone and go all out warding (incidentally they have indicated that the system is smart enough to tell meaningful warding from spamming wards at the base), you just need to do things better than other players (across all elos) on that champ in that role.

Built Luden's on Sejuani, grade instantly has two points taken off.

It compares your overall performance to the average performance of other players who play that champ in your role.

CS seems to play a significant role in determining your rank. 150 CS at 45 minutes isn't great despite your K/D/A being amazing.

I had a Teemo go 3/1/2 (15% Kill Participation) with 149CS when the game ended at 19:14 and got an S.

Stomp, high KDA with low CS. Maybe low tower kills, and low dargon counts.

Did you sacrifice your first born to Rito?

No? No S for you then.

I placed the most Wards on my team (20), destroyed the most wards (8) and guarded Cait as she got all 7 of her turret kills. We got nearly every dragon most importantly the lone Elder Dragon and a Baron. I basically held my teams hand to victory the entire way despite Ryze and Liss trying so hard to resist.

It's frustrating. It seems I can only get S grades when i play assassins or ADC.

I wonder if teammate performance matters as well....

In the first paragraph, under "How the System Works" clearly states

Finish a game of League and you’ll earn points for your champion based on your team’s performance as well as your own contribution.

It makes sense given the apparent performance of your teammates. Only Caitlyn appared to have performed favorably overall. Support Vel barely made around 25% kill participation, no sight stone, and couldn't have gotten a good rank. Looks like Liss and Ryza had the same sort of troubles.

This is the only explanation I can find for situations like these, and it makes sense in the vain that good performance means your whole team is successful and not just you. But eh, just a theory.

Yah my team was not good, even the Cait wasn't very good. I decided mid game to stick to her like glue and get her fed knowing I would need her to win the game.

To the Luden's comment, I typically wouldn't but late game I needed more damage because team wasn't killing. It worked and we won a game that, despite what my score looks like, was an absolute grind.
