The meme isn't as common, but I've talked to several players who started long ago and they still sometimes joke "better nerf Irelia" I guess she got hit by nerfs in several consecutive patches and it continued even after many players said she didn't need another nerf.

And as someone who enjoys playing her I can say she's not brainless. In fact early game you have to be extremely aware of what is going on in your lane and the jungle because Irelia really doesn't have much power early. She's solid midgame and can continue to thrive late, but early on she's very weak compared to most top laners.

If you play her brainlessly, you'll end up like the Irelia in a game I played last night. She went 3/14/9 partly because after laning phase ended she had no idea how to engage and often wound up facing me (Sejuani built full tank) or Olaf. She rarely survived those all-ins.
