Return of DFG

So, I know many of you either clicked on this link in fear or in happiness, depending whether or not you're a mid lane player, but I feel that this discussion is necessary. I myself play a lot of mid lane, even though i can't say i'm good, I can say that Mid lane has been a bit weak lately. The tank meta was created to make mid laner's cry, and now the ADC meta, 3 autos kill any AP mid laner. So I want to hear what the community thinks about buffing the Mid Lane a bit and bringing the most hated item in history of League back into this game.

For my arguments if any of you bother to read it, is as follows. The percent health damage can really help dealing with tanks, dealing 15% health can really turn a fight as a burst champion. The increase in damage caused by the 20% damage amplification also increases a champions burst. Also, the Ap this item grants will make it a huge early game power spie that can really shift a game depending on who utilizes this item better and makes mid lane just that much more intense. Adding this item into the game right now can balance out the game and not tip it into the mid laners favour like it did back in the day. It will ease the battle against tanks, but won't be able to stop adc's from killing them in 3 auto's. Also, this item amplifies a champions burst but doesn't help with team fighting, from gettting killed before they could output damage, from being cc'd etc. It makes the game more dangerous, makes the game more risky, makes the game more immersive.

That is my argument, but please tell me what you think. You like the idea and it makes sense, you hate the idea and hate the item, or you just don't care. That's all, don't insta-lock.

I have to disagree.

First, mages can typically burst from far outside of adc range and their damage comes out much, much faster than even an adc autoing 3 times (a slight exaggeration unless you are talking about mf/graves, the former of which is overpowered and the latter has almost no range) can achieve. Basically, if an adc has gotten close enough to you as a mage and you weren't able to deal with it, its your mispositioning/mistake and you shouldn't still be able to kill them (at least not alone).

Another thing you aren't considering is the fact that most mages come with cc; giving them access to this huge amount of burst while also giving your opponent no way to react is why deathfire was removed in the first place. Take Leblanc for instance. With DFG, she was instagibing anyone with DFG+Q+R and retreating at almost no cost to her (the mana cost of W and Q). Now, at the very least, Leblanc has to stay extended long enough to land her E to trigger similar damage; actually opening up the ability for the enemy team to counterplay (Don't get me started about how you can "counterplay" a QR combo with a W to close distance). Annie is another example of a mage that would be able to heavily abuse DFG. Ziggs too........I could go on.

Also, while almost every adc ONLY gives damage to a team, a Mage gives more upfront damage (burst), but typically has far more utility than an adc does. Tradeoffs, these are important.

Remember that tanks only became decent against mages when dfg was removed; prior to this, mages didn't care who they focused, their target was dead regardless.

The last reason that I'm against DFG coming back is it isn't a good item on mages in general. Just a select few who can use it better than anyone else. Or its used as a "I messed up my positioning and now i need to instagib someone so I don't die" item. In the first case, this is just going to shift the meta of midlaners onto champs that can use DFG most effectively (and all other mages will be strictly worse). This is a situation Riot is intentionally trying to avoid (look at their marksmen updates to try to differentiate the different champions). In the second case, I think every set of champions should be punished for mistakes like mispositioning, overextending, etc. DFG acts as a huge band aid in this situation and I don't think thats fair.

Now I won't argue that adc's aren't a little too strong atm, but I think tuning them back a little is a better idea than bringing back an item that causes many more problems and instantly makes all mages overpowered.

it was removed as an item because it's existence limited design space and also limited balancing options. it should stay removed.

The issue isn't DFG.

The current issue is that ALL AD champions have gotten a bunch of shiny new items and the ADCs got polished up as an ENTIRE class.

Even the Juggularnauts and Beef Cakes got new items and buffs very recently.

APs literally have nothing to look forward to this Pre-season and Season 6. It's just Season 5 again except everyone else graduated to the next grade.

^ That's the issue.

Mages and Sejuani are people too.
