I still don't know what support to pick

Hello :) I've been maining support for a while now, and I still don't really know how to pick support, as sometimes an obvious pick doesn't work, and a random pick might work, I feel like it's 90% just luck and 10% pick but anyway

I mainly play squishy support because they have a lot of win rate for the moment and I prefer them, I can play pretty much any support except the ones that demand a lot of precision (thresh, blitzcrank, sometimes im okay with morgana). I very rarely play tanky support because they are way too passive, it's pretty much just wait until they mess up or get ganked so it's boring and I feel useless (plus if you mess up once, you get flammed as fuck, which never happens when i play squishy support because i rarely die)

For the moment, I pick my support depending on how easy it's gonna be for my ADC to farm, for example, if my ADC is a Caytlin, i'll pick Soraka to let her poke/farm and i'll heal whatever damage she gets because she has the highest range anyway so she can do the rest herself usually. If my ADC is a Vayne, I'll pick Zyra to do the poking and let her farm.

Is it a good strategy ? How do you pick support yourself ?

I always pick Nami unless they have Yasuo, in which case I pick Blitz or Soraka because his windwall blocks everything she can possibly do :(

Just play what you enjoy the most. Master it and it will yield greater results than trying to pick what other people tell you is good.

That's what I thought, I usually play Soraka (65% winrate) and Zyra (50% winrate), I hate when people tell me to pick something tanky, I always lose when I do so, Tank supports are terrible imo, unless the adc enemy do terrible, it's useless in early

Tank support can be good when they complement the primary engage. But if the team asks you to play a tank, and some how fill the role as the teams primary tank with support level gold and XP, then they totally botched the comp. Though if you really don't like tank supports, I could recommend the likes of Karma, Lulu, etc, as a substitute, because you can sudo tank with their large shielding power.

One of my personal favorites is Sona. Mainly because she offers a fair amount of poke and utility. And she probably has a lot more late game power compared to most Supports, thanks to how her passive CDR works. The drawback to this is being squishy as hell in the early game, and a lack of hard CC.

Sadly, this happens extremely often. If I'm not playing a tank, our team probably doesn't have one (no matter which role I'm placed in).

Nautilus is probably going to be my most-played support and top-laner due to this.

Your logic is flawed

If your adc Is cait zyra is better choise and if your adc is vayne soraka is easly the best choise

You want to augment caitylnn Lane bully strenghts with zyra because unless she gets ahead early game she falls of insanely in mid game

As for vayne. You just want to help her survive and soraka is best for that

So I should just do the contrary of my theory ? I don't know if bullying the lane is a good idea, more bullying means more chance to get ganked, and i'm not in a high elo so my ADC might not have any map awareness

Personally, I've been playing:

Nautilus Used when my team needs a durable champion capable of engaging fights and locking down or diving targets. His ultimate and hook are great during roams or for getting easy kills during the laning phase and he hurts rather badly early-game. Janna Used when we already have a champion capable of engaging fights and I need to be able to peel/disengage for my carries. Soraka Used when my ADC just needs to survive laning phase to dominate the enemy team (i.e. Vayne). If your team already has a durable front-line and strong engage, she is useful for keeping important targets alive during fights. Though, you have to be careful about assassins on the enemy team. Morgana Used when I want to pick off targets (due to her snare) or make an ally immune to CC. If we have a high-damage champion who is vulnerable when CCed (i.e. Katarina, Master Yi, Vayne), she can remove that weakness and let them run rampant.
Lulu Used against divers/assassins due to her ability to protect an ally (shield, bonus health) and lockdown the threat (polymorph, knockup). Alternatively, can greatly increase the threat of any allied divers (i.e. Shyvana, Olaf, Hecarim) due to her slows and movement speed buff.

To answer your specific questions:

I prefer using Janna with Caitlyn. Your shield provides bonus AD (stronger headshots/poke) and mitigates any return damage taken from minions or champions. In addition, Caitlyn is already rather difficult to get onto (due to range, traps and net) and Janna makes it almost impossible.

I prefer using Soraka with Vayne. Vayne is already fairly difficult to kill during teamfights (stealth, tumble, condemn) and just needs to survive the laning phase to win most match-ups. The heals Soraka provides can let Vayne survive and farm up in the majority of match-ups.

I'll try to play Nautilus more, though i'm wondering, with such a support, should I try to grab as much as possible and poke, or should I just wait and go in at the good moment like Leona (when bot is being ganked, etc)

Situational.

Nautilus is rather good at trading early-game due to Riptide's base damage and your shield, so trade occasionally to apply pressure. If you keep chunking them when they misposition, they are going to be playing scared and lose CS and lane pressure.

You can't always do this due to various factors (i.e. match-up, minion advantage, items, positioning, jungler proximity), but you should be watching for opportunities.

Obviously, this is all match-up dependent and situational.

Okay so I made a plan on how to pick like you :) I played two games with nautilus, got A and S, this guy is amazing, thanks a lot friend :)

Glad to help.

Also, I forgot to add that Nautilus is fantastic when paired with a diver/assassin. All you have to do is use your ultimate on their target to render them helpless.
