Sanguine Blade is the *Worst* Item To Date - Here's Why --> Bonus game bug

Sanguine Blade

Firstly, I would like to clarify what I mean by the worst item. In fact sanguine blade can be quite strong in certain situations. It's not so much the stats that I have issues with. It's the worst because of the gameplay and attitude it promotes. This is exponentially worse based on situation.

The nature of the item's passive is that if more than 1 enemy is near, it loses its effectiveness. This means, the champs that build the item want to find a solo person to fight. If they run into 2 or more, their effectiveness is severely hindered. The loss of passive bonus is relatively unimportant. It's the player's perceived loss of effectiveness that's the problem. Time and time again (even as new as the item is), as soon as team fights start happening, or skirmishes where 2 or more teammates are usually involved, guess who is nowhere to be found. You guessed right, the person with the sanguine blade.

It is the single most counter-intuitive item to date for a team based game. Sure the idea isn't bad at surface level, but after that ~15-20 min mark, team fights are the norm and solo fights should generally be the exception. However, now one person is forever split pushing, praying that he/she gets a single person fight, while the rest of the team fights 4v5.

I bet I've had 5 games already off the top of my head that the person with the blade is in TOP lane slapping a tier 2 turret, when the enemy team is at our base getting inhibitors and inhibitor turrets. Upon multiple requests to have them help, they say "I can't, the blade loses its power and I can't do damage when they are grouped."

This gets worse by nature of the item. If a solo laner or jungler builds it for example, they can get fed with some early game catches. I.e. I had a ~10/3/4 Aatrox the other game. We are losing everything in base, but he is going for 2nd tier top turret and won't come back because his glorious k/d is worth more. He is the one getting the kills and thus the gold. However, now all of that is essentially wasted as he won't help do anything but push a solo lane. Fight around dragon? Yeah, right.

Alternatively, let's say that person gets behind. Well now they are both behind in solo fights and are substantially less effective in team fights. I've had multiple games where the jungler gets behind, but has the item and then tries to help with team fighting. I watch them burn everything they have multiple times on the enemy team. End game stats, they did 12k dmg when the average for everybody else is 20k+ and are still 3/9/5 or something.

My main point is this. The item promotes staying away from your team. Even if the resulting loss of the passive realistically isn't that bad (I'm not saying one way or another), the person with the item only needs to think about the loss of that power and will refuse to group. I'm not here to say the item can't be good, but it requires the right situation, with the right champions, etc. Comebacks are almost a dream when somebody has it, because again.. 4v5 fights for the rest of the team, and a solo split pusher with little to do if more than 1 attack him/her. It promotes solo play, K/D obsession, and promotes a desire to actively stay away from your team. In my opinion... which probably won't even get attention.. this is the most (for lack of better term) cancerous item yet. I would rather see, dumb, off-meta builds, or even completely wrong builds. At least the weak person without the item will instinctively (hopefully) want to stay near the group for protection. With the blade, they still won't want to because they are that much weaker and definitely aren't as effective as if they had build pretty much anything else. It's a great item for like.. silver and below I would imagine as then group play is less likely to happen (similar reason as to why yi can be so good in lower elos and has a harder time in higher ones).

Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to get that out. I can handle losses where we tried and simply got stomped. It doesn't feel good. It's exponentially more tilting feeling like we lost because our solo split pusher blames the 4 trying to fight off the 5 (especially if most kill gold is on the split pusher who now won't group).

P.S. I don't know what you did in the preseason patch Riot, but the opening and closing of the game window (as in the initial launch of game right after champ select, or the leaving of the game once win/loss) now hard locks my computer. Everything becomes unresponsive, can't ctrl+alt+del, tab out, talk, hear, etc. The only fix is to hold the power button on the tower. I have disabled all overlays (only had discord to begin with), as I noticed you mentioned that may be causing the frame drops in game (doesn't actually fix that issue entirely although it seems to kinda help). I have also tried doing a full repair of the game. Only thing I haven't really tried yet is a entire reinstall. I've also tried having the client close when the game window is running, which really shouldn't be an issue considering my system (didn't help anyways).

System specs: i7 8700k, GTX 1080 ti, 16gb ram, dual monitor, league installed on ssd. Only other programs running would be discord and youtube for music (although it's happened without them running as well).

It's an item for splitpushers. Not every champion wants to teamfight and actually quite a few champions shouldn't be teamfighting at all since they provide next to nothing in a teamfight. How is it a bad item when it's facilitating and promoting actual valid strategy? If splitpushing was something that was unwanted they would have done something about it to make it a non viable strategy.

Why is it bad that they want more than one strategy to be viable?

I wasn't trying to imply that splitpushing is a bad / invalid strategy. I think it's a perfectly valid one that I see used well all the time. The problem isn't the strategy itself, but the item that says to "Hey you are now a splitpusher, group and you don't do anything". Now obviously that is entirely untrue, and I have seen the occasional sanguine blade builder actual consistently team fight towards the end of games. Again, the problem is that people interpret the item as "I can't be effective in team fights, I lose all this power". So while our base is getting literally destroyed and we can't stop the siege... we have sanguine blade man out in some random lane taking a tier 2 turret, refusing to group.

Again, I'm not saying that split pushing is bad, nor should it not be promoted somehow. However, I think that sanguine blade is a rough (at best) implementation of split pushing benefits. I don't want my 3.0 k/d champion to be out essentially getting nothing (other than maybe some turret gold), while we lose base, which sets them up for drag / baron if they don't already have those things. By the time the turret is dead, we have either lost base pieces, and / or almost all map priority.

This needs to be the top comment. Very well put! Why are people getting rewarded for not playing as a team and leaving their team to 4v5 after the solo guy with sanguine blade gets collapsed on by their whole team...
