Refund or keep Kassadin?

TLDR:Pretty new MOBA player, very quick learner. Watch a lot of Ranked/Professional LOL play. Have loved and picked up on all my champs very quickly. Struggling hard with Kassadin especially until level 14-16(long time). His early/mid game is god awful and I dont feel like its me. I do awesome with Viktor. Should I refund Kass or hope for fixes to come soon? Interested in plenty of other mids.

I'll try to make my background as quick as possible. I'm very new to MOBAs. Less than a year. I started around August of last year. I pretty much played nothing but bot games until around level 24 because I really wanted to get a good grasp on the play of the game before I went in and ruined pvp matches by being a noob. I spent just as much time watching professional play(Worlds, LCS, etc) and ranked games through the client as I did playing the game. I felt like that really helped me learn fast. I tend to pick up on gaming quickly as I have been doing so all my life(26 yro). I also spent a lot of time watching anklespankin videos on the specific champions I was interested in.

My strategy towards playing champions and roles is that I like and enjoy ALL roles. I would say the only role I am more natural at than any other is support. I feel like a good support cant impact the team more than any other role. With that being said after I got a good grasp of the basics of the game I knew I wanted a champion for each role and wanted to make sure I got that champion/role down pat before moving onto the next champ/role. In terms of how I decide what champions I get I do not like simply buying the FOTM champs or buying just because they are super dominant. I watch games, read guides and buy based upon how I like the champion him/herself more than anything. I'm a bit hipster but I will not buy something that I know is gimp as fuck(Sejuani before recent buffs).

With that being said my champ purchase went something like.....Graves-->Maokai-->Viktor(right before he blew up in recent popularity)->Nami->Rengar->Twitch->Nautilus->Kassadin. Naut and Kass very recently. I've been trying to spread out the roles and once I got 1 of each I went for #2 of each role. So far the way I have let my personality and research choose my champ purchases have all worked GREAT for me. I Immediately loved the champion and naturally picked up on the champion very quickly......until Kassadin. I usually start with 1-3 bot games with a brand new champ and move onto pvp because I immediately feel comfortable.

Kassadin has just gave me a sad face. I started thinking it was just me but as I said before I heavily research playstyle/builds and make my own version of those builds as my personality fits. My issue with Kassadin is that he is a horrible laner and cannot exchange especially early on with just about ANY matchup. His poke is absolutely horrible because his Q is short range and barely even moves the enemies health bar. So I was like oh okay I've got E and W so i'm a close-up battle mage I should be able pretty durable to walk up and exchange. Nope. Even when I charge up E, Q as I walk up and E on their face I get BLASTED and lose the exchange. It gets really bad against melee champions such as Riven, Kat, etc. So then I get my ultimate and I think oh this shits over i'm gonna full combo this fool W->R->Q->E but even then the very best I do is come out even in the exchange and most of the time I lose the exchange. My only resort is to sit back on my turret and try to Q and E the enemy to try to trade while CSing. Despite juking a lot poke heavy champs still rip me up under my turret until I have to recall and need jungle help to not lose the teleport.

In short I feel like Kass' poke sucks and also doesnt have enough damage/durability to go in on champs for exchanges. And in the end he sucks horribly until level 14-16 and by then if my team hasnt done well enough to still keep the game competitive It doesnt really matter because i'm fighting from behind.

Should I refund Kass and buy another mid thats interesting me a lot right now or wait it out and hope Riot sees the light and fixes some of these incredible nerfs to Kass? I mean....170 base damage on Q at max level? What the hell?

Why would you refund a champ you bought with IP? That's a waste.

He's not getting any changes to help with your problems. You just need to learn who he is good against and who he isn't, and how to lane when you're against a bad matchup.

Save your refund anyway.

Right now I buy champs on Riot points because I CONSTANTLY need IP to buy runes. I still dont have anywhere near the tier 3 runes I need for all my champs.

I have been going 21/9/0 with AP quints, MP marks, health seals and a mixture of MR/MR p Lvl glyphs.

I have been going with the tear first so maybe I should adjust that and see how things go. I've also been rushing the Rod of Ages....ironically it seems like it takes ages to actually do damage. I can never fight without help most of the time. And if i get too close in group fights I get ripped to shreds quick, fast and in a hurry. I usually only get 2 ults off and i'm dead.

I'm worried about having mana issues if I dont get rod. Maybe I should just suck it up and try something else like zhonyas first. Especialy since I start with a flask most of the time.

As far as the person who said learn who kass can and cant lane with.........I've already learned that. 95% of champs kass simply cannot lane with, not right now. Whereas I win 95% of early lane exchanges when I play viktor. I feel so much more confident.

That just means you are better with Viktor and he's got better power earlier. That doesn't mean Kass can't win his lane. The problem is not with Kassadin.

I also do way better with viktor late game. Some of that has to do with me being able to build so fast early game. Even when i'm full build with Kass I cant drop the hammer like I can with viktor in late team games. And that part is because of durability. I have to ult into the mess that is the middle of a fight and take the aoe damage with kass. With viktor I can not only stand back and blast away with R, E, Q but I can also CC a lot of their team especially in the jungle with an augmented W. And if i'm in trouble I am more durable and I have W and backwards E to get away and scare chasers off. The kit just feels way better the way they are now. Both Viktor's E and Q alone are both way better poke spells than Kass's Q and Viktor's E is wayyyyy further range. Not only that Viktor's Q shield lasts actually long enough to use.

I think if Kass had the durability to be able to use W, R, E combo it would solve everything. But if they dont want to add durability they need to add a lot more damage. Personally the way he is built with W being melee I think it would fit his play style much more to be a battle mage and have more durability. But they cant keep the damage the way it is and also have him this squishy. Even my 21/0/9 Viktor build can withstand just as much damage as 21/9/0 Kass.

Perhaps I should experiment with a more tanky build. If it means I can actually survive to exchange or survive for kills in team fights....maybe its for the better. I'm just so frustrated right now with Kass. And I love the nature of his kit.

Kass is one of those champs you should never refund. He is the #1 balance candidate on riots mind so even if he sucks now, he will become strong eventually. Not to mention wasting a refund on a 3150 ip champ is a bad idea. As for the champs you are interested in, get malz first because he is a god in solo q.

Nah man kassadin is a good champiom ,don't waste your refunds, you only get 3 an that's it.

I personaly refunded vel koz, miss fortune, and lucian... I ended up buying them back months later, and although i never play vel koz, lucian and mf are two of my favorite.

I wish i had save a refund for elise!

If you bought him with IP, don't waste a refund. In my opinion, you should never waste a refund on an IP purchase, as you could require that refund for a RP purchase, and regret it when you don't have the refund to do so. You only get 3, no more, no less. You can't earn more refunds.

Kass isn't very good early game, but he is a late-game assassin and his late game is very good.

Or should I say was, the nerfs hit him extremely hard, but I say hold on to kass because they are working on bringing him back to viability. Also, never waste a refund token on an IP purchase.

I was a Kassadin main since season 1. I even had this account dedicated to playing nothing but kassadin. But between the constant bans last season 2 seasons and the ongoing nerfs even after rework, that I actually prefered the rework, he became garbage. His ratios aren't very good, not much better than most mid and far worse than most assassin's. His base dmg is on the low side, and his W cooldown nerfs were the nail in the coffin. After that nerf his win rate was a steady 42%. After many leaving and leaving kassadin mains just playing him and sucked up the heavy nerf his win rate went up to a whole 49% with the lowest average damage oit of all assassin's. Then they kept modifying his ukt which made him more and less mobile at the same time but the way it is still hurts him more than benefits him, unless against a heavy skill shot champ that has no cc. Now his win rate is usually around 43% being on the top 10 lowest win rates constantly.

No, win rates should not be a prime example if a champ is OP but it is an indicator when something is way off.

So in summary,low damage and high costs And decent CD other than his ult that has great CD. He isn't very worth it anymore. I played him mostly with iceborn since rework to help his little to no cc and give his dmg and clear a little boost.

He is hard to work with now. But if you do decide to play him.. for the love of god don't get tear. Unless you don't wanna do dmg until your 20 minutes into a game.
