Help a Midlaner Learn Top (Because Dynamic Queue is Always Making Me Support)

Historically I have played almost exclusively mid lane (my main role) and support, with a bit of jungle thrown in. That said, with dynamic queue that combo almost always yields me support, so I've started trying to queue as mid/top when I'd like to play mid. The downside of that is that top is my least played role - until I started this strategy I hadn't played top in literally a year.

As a result I've been struggling when I get put top- particularly with getting ganked, as I simply don't see them coming and can't get out as I can in the shorter midlane. So first the specific question - where should I ward on top lane?

Second, any tips for a midlaner playing in the other solo lane? Any good mid lane champs that would also be effective top?

Obviously I'll get better with the matchups and powers spikes with experience, but any general advice for how to play top would be super appreciated.

don't go top right now unless you plan on playing Graves , Fiora , Garen , Gangplank or any other of the fotm champs, or you're a one trick pony that plays a mid laner that can go top like Yasuo . once the current fotm top laners get nerfed then you should consider trying top lane.

I main mid and play either top or jungle. My top lane pool is Cass, Yasuo, Riven, Irelia, Lulu and I've never needed to pick anything else. It's really hard to explain warding patterns through text without writing 3 paragraphs though

Tips I find really useful.

  1. Ward. Nothing is more annoying that getting Dyrus'd on and not having any counter play to that 5 man gank.

  2. Play champs in your style. I like the idea of doing damage and going tanky so I usually play bruisers like J4, Olaf, or Panth.

  3. Don't be overwhelmed. Usually when I get top and pick Malphite and they pick Darius, I just stay calm, try to farm, and wait for jungler to gank or if the top laner does something stupid, punish them for it. It's usually on how well I do early and to me, there really isn't counters in low elos, but just depends on how you play against them.

  4. Try not to blame team. I know this might not be easy but if you go into game where you find yourself doing the best early game and your team is not doing as well as you are, don't be an asshole and flame. I've gotten those games where I find myself doing great in laning phase but as soon as teamfighting starts, everything goes to hell. Just try to control your team by encouraging them and if it doesn't work, don't flame but just see what you can do to improve. That being said, I can't blame you if you have an 0/9/0 mid laner or an afk, but remember you can always help them instead of being top all game.

  5. Map Awareness. This is really key to prevent those dreaded 3 man ganks under tower or those times where you didn't see someone to secure a kill. As long as you look at the map, it will help especially if you want to main champs like Shen,Pantheon, or TahmKench.

These are just all the tips I have to help you. Hope these help
