Your Ranking System Needs a Rework

Title says it all really.

The ranking system is LoL is just awful. I've been playing LoL for a long while now and it's the most frustrating part of the game. It's the only part of the game I absolutely hate. It functions just like the old chat rooms used to. You did away with those because of the negative effects it had on the game. Why not fix the ranking system as well?

When you have to rely on other players not to feed and not keep feeding, every match is statically stacked against you and it really all comes down to luck of the draw.

**You can not carry a match by yourself if all the other players are feeding and running around not caring. **

It's really simple, no one cares at these ranks and more people that join and start playing LoL, the more the numbers stack against you.

Early players of LoL have the highest chance of being in these ranks and staying there, period. That tells me the system is broken. When new players to the game can't join and end up in these tiers right away. A good player won't take months to reach the top, he would reach it every match with other good players. Period.

You can put 1 of the best players in the world on a team and they will lose if they other 4 players do nothing but feed.

After years of playing I had to post something. I'm sure a lot of you will disagree, but a logical person can see that the numbers are stacked against you with so many people playing the game. And the percentage of those people that are just bad players, is through the roof. Even if I put myself in the the bad players section, it's all luck with the current system. Period.

How the ranking system works is just sad.

Nobody is going to take this post seriously since you're Bronze.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Yeah, figures.

All Bronze must be bad players since they are "Bronze", right? LMAO, that's the whole point. I was silver 4 a few weeks ago. It must be because I'm so bad that I fell from Silver to Bronze. Its in the numbers though, they know the truth. The truth is, no matter what you do the numbers are stacked against you when it comes to your chance to win, it's called statistical probability. Oh, wait. I'm Bronze and shouldn't be using words that big.

FacerollKatarina3 votes

You were silver 4 and then dropped to bronze 3 in a few weeks?! Lol Go play some Normal games instead of spamming solo queue. You can practice and learn a lot more than then come back and get silver :^).

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Right, but I shouldn't have to. If I'm a good player it should be based on my match. Not the match of 4 other people. I'm simply saying, in the end it does not only depend on you. Most people don't realize just how much it does not depend on just your skill in a match. Though your ego might want to make you think you are carrying the match, you really aren't .

When it comes to predicting the chances of winning a match, you can't draw a statistical number from an unknown factor. The 4 other players are unknown factors. Therefore, you moving up in rank is based on luck.

I can't explain to people what they can't see for themselves.

All i'm asking is that some kind of system be built that is based on ones skill and not just the luck of getting 4 other good team mates.

Right, but I shouldn't have to.

if you believe that dropping six divisions isn't indicative of needing practice, the fault lies with you -- not the system

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Again, if you can't see that you can't draw a number for ranking, solely based on ones own performance, without a number to rank the other players in a match, you have missed the whole point. You can't draw a number for the other 4 players in any given match, because it is unknown. This means it's luck of the draw.

i just hope you look back at this one day when you've improved and see how much of a copout this is

i'm not saying the ranked system is flawless, but saying the system is entirely at fault for why you've plummeted speaks volumes on your mentality

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

I never said it was, I have I said I could suck, I could be the worst player in LoL.

What I am saying is that a system that has millions of players and thousands of players in a single rank. You can't just toss those players in a match 5v5 and it be a reflection of a single persons skill of playing the game. In fact it's only a fraction of that one persons skill at playing the game.

If you can't see that, I can't help you see it. lol

GG!

FacerollKatarina1 votes

You only won 25 of 76 solo q games dude. Its not your teams fault. You're obvs doing something wrong. Its not based on luck. You just generally lack experience thats all.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Forehead smack. You know not the numbers you are talking about.

GG

FacerollKatarina1 votes

what... I checked your profile LOL

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

My stats are 24 Wins of 51 Matches, is just about 50% wins.

I am talking about how you figure averages in a 5v5 match out of 20,000 people. The chance to win is random. It's luck of the draw.

You all want to blame someone and that's awesome since that's how most matches go in LoL. However math doesn't lie. You can't come up with an average, when every match the numbers change. It's not that hard to understand.

This is what i meant about you know not the numbers you talk about.

Not my stats.

FacerollKatarina1 votes

You can carry a game by yourself though if you know what you're doing

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Yes, but not enough of them. And the chance that you will be able to carry all depends on the other team players not feeding the whole match. Too many of them feeding and you lose. One person feeding one lane, fine you can carry. If two or three people feed you can't just carry by yourself all the time.

P.S. This is all luck of the draw, every match. Every match is random. Every match you start, the numbers rest. There is no 50/50. Its an illusion.

Yeah, figures.

All Bronze must be bad players since they are "Bronze", right? LMAO, that's the whole point. I was silver 4 a few weeks ago. It must be because I'm so bad that I fell from Silver to Bronze.

A few weeks ago, you were PLACED into Silver 4 by going 4-6 in your placement matches. Let's run through those.

Game 1: As jungler, you have the lowest kill participation on your team. Top Fiora snowballed and carried. Game 2: Top and Mid won hard. Your mid was a Ryze-only smurf who won all 10 of his placement matches and is now in Plat 2. You had lowest kill participation again. Game 3: You have the most deaths on the team and the lowest kill participation again. Game 4: Leave Game 5: Your bot lane did legitimately do pretty bad here, but your Nidalee top was doing great. You were again tied for most deaths on the team. Game 6: Carried by a Yasuo who went on to complete placements 9-1 and is in Gold 2 already. Game 7: Lowest kill participation, tied for most deaths. Game 8: Your bot lane got crushed again, Fiora tried to carry but couldn't deal with the 16/2 enemy Cait. You were again tied for most deaths on the team. Game 9: Everyone on your team positive KDA except for you. Most deaths. Lowest kill participation. 116 cs adc in 35 minutes. (DC?) Game 10: Your team had an AFK and surrendered at 20 minutes. Nevertheless, you had 79 cs to the opposing Tryndamere's 164 cs.

You won 4 of the 10 games but you were never instrumental to the win. It was always your team winning for you while you either farmed without participating, or died a lot, or both. THESE are the games that were luck of the draw. Placement matches put 10 total mysteries in a game together because it has no clue how good you are. Some are great and some are terrible and some are in-between. Matchmaking looked at those 4 wins and suspected that you belonged in low Silver, and then you proved it wrong by immediately losing 9 of the next 10 games against established Silver 4 players.

The numbers are stacked against your team, because you are on it and you don't know that much about how to play. You're playing full AP Diana jungle with exactly the same build every game, never upgrading trinket, never buying wards. This is Bronze behavior. You say you've been playing for years but that doesn't mean you've been playing properly. I see that this is the first season you've played ranked. (Or is this not your main?) If that's true, those years of playing have been spent on Normals. You've been playing games against people with the same Normal MMR as you all this time. This past month, you've seen a lot of losses and it's because you're not used to being on teams where everyone is Silver or high Bronze and playing seriously.

If you focus on learning instead of saying "I'm losing games so ranked must be broken," you're going to start getting better at League. You will be able to go into a Bronze game and laugh at how easy it is, even when your team makes misplays and bad decisions. But that means swallowing your pride first and acknowledging that you are not currently playing like a good player.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Again, if you can't see the numbers, I can't explain them to you. You can pick apart my scores by looking at those matches but that does not tell you if I'm a good player or not. You can't tell if after a while, even I don't care if I die. By the end of a match that you are already losing. One more death doesn't matter. Again, when you are that low rank and you rely on other players, that may or may not suck, it's all luck.

I never claimed to be the best in the world. I'm simply saying that your chances to win are a lot lower than 50/50. They are like 20%. A better system could be built for ranked matches.

OhBoyItsaMegaman1 votes

I can't tell if I'm being trolled.

Percent means "per cent". "For every one hundred". If a player's chances of winning are 20 percent, it means that for every 100 games, you expect him to win 20 of them and lose 80. While a single person's odds of winning could be 20%, everyone's collective chances of winning have to be 50 percent. In 10 games there are 50 winners, 50 losers, and 100 players. 50 "per cent" of the players win their game. Not 20.

You're correct that I cannot completely tell what you are doing right or wrong just by looking at numbers. Would you like me to spectate you? I'll turn off Worlds right now and spectate you on stream if you think that that would be helpful. If you would like, take a look at some spectates that I have done for viewers before {1, 2, 3, 4}. I do this to help, not for laughs or to make people feel bad. If I watch you, I'm sure I will be able to tell you a lot of specific things that you're doing wrong, and that gives you the chance to turn your ranked experience on its head and start climbing instead of falling.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

You can't really draw a percent from a random number. LOL<-- That is laugh out loud.

You need a set of numbers and a number to compare them too. You can't do that when 4 of the other numbers that are random, every match. The numbers don't lie. it's Math.

What else can I say. You can't base someones skill off the outcome of other people. Unless it is the same team, same players. In this case you can build the numbers you are looking for. However, once you change champs the number will change again based on the person playing the champs. The numbers are mind boggling in each match.

Without it being the same people every time, the chances are random. lol Luck of the draw.

I spectate all the time. What I see when I do is a lot less people engaging the enemy and calculated risks.

Low level ques are not played this way and the people in these ques don't care. What I'm saying is that your chance to get out of these ques are not based on your skill really. It is luck. Pure and simple.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

Again, I don't have the answer as to how to fix it, but i can tell you that it's flawed.

The chances are totally random.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probability

Probability is the measure of the likeliness that an event will occur. Probability is quantified as a number between 0 and 1 (where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty). The higher the probability of an event, the more certain we are that the event will occur. A simple example is the toss of a fair (unbiased) coin. Since the two outcomes are equally probable, the probability of "heads" equals the probability of "tails", so the probability is 1/2 (or 50%) chance of either "heads" or "tails".

This is the kind of probability I am talking about. It is expressed as a percent or as a decimal or fraction between 0 and 1. If you are talking about some other kind of math where a random chance cannot be expressed as a percentage, show me somewhere—anywhere—on the internet that explains it.

What else can I say. You can't base someones skill off the outcome of other people.

You can't? If you can't base someone's skill off of that, then why are all of the people in Challenger Solo Queue so good at the game? If you can't base someone's skill off of their Solo Queue rank, then there should be a lot of people in Challenger who are really really awful, and there should be a lot of LCS players who are Bronze or Silver in Solo Queue.

Unless it is the same team, same players. In this case you can build the numbers you are looking for. However, once you change champs the number will change again based on the person playing the champs. The numbers are mind boggling in each match.

No, it's not mindboggling. Your MMR increases when you win games and decreases when you lose games. This makes it an accurate measure of your skill because only the people who win a lot will have high MMR. After a sufficient number of games, it can be used to accurately predict which team is likely to win a given match.

This is why smurfing exists. This is why MMR boosting exists. This is why "Unranked to Diamond" marathons exist. If you put someone on an account where the MMR is much lower than it should be, and then you put them in a game where all 10 accounts have that MMR, their team will have a much higher chance of winning. According to your theory, this isn't true. When a player plays on a low-ranked smurf account, you think their team will still only win if they get lucky.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

You believe in the system. That's good for you.

However, it doesn't change the fact that who you are matched with is luck of the draw. Their MMR at low ranks, means nothing. lol

My skill playing the game should not be based on the win or lose of a match that has four other people controlling the outcome.

I don't care how good you think you are, you can not carry a match where everyone is feeding.

You want me to show you how it works. You join a match with your high ranked champ, I will tell the team to feed, and you see if you can't carry it.

You see once you end up in gold and plat, you are playing with a better class of players.

At low ranks however, a good player can get stuck. It's all luck of the draw. Some of them get to the higher ranks. Others fall below and start new accounts to try again. Or wait till next season to try again. It's all luck of the draw.

OhBoyItsaMegaman1 votes

It sounds like you believe in the system too.

You're saying that at low MMR, people are bad. And at high MMR, people are good. The only reason that happens is because the system works. If the outcome is random in the low divisions, then people who are BAD should get out of Elo Hell ALL THE TIME. There should be a ton of really bad players in high ranks. Right? Like so bad that they don't even know what their abilities do or what items to buy.

Because it doesn't matter if you're good or bad. If you believe that low MMR games are won completely at random and that an individual player has no control over whether their team will win or lose, then that would mean that there are plenty of people who get to Gold/Plat even if they have no idea how to play.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

I'm saying with the current system low and high rank players are only there because of luck.

This is because the system can not decipher the individual skill of a player. It judges everyone in the game by the last team they play on, which means your chance of winning and you skill are not in your control. This means the odds can be stacked against you 4 to 1 each match. If you cant see that, i can't explain it to you. You can play the best match of your life and still lose it.

I'm good with this post. GG

Go look at my op.gg, last season I was Silver 4, I'm now Plat 3. That shows that anyone can play the game and climb the ranks, I've been carried, and I've done the carrying.

And never once did I say your vocabulary was lower than the average human beings due to the fact that you suck at a video game.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

The whole vocabulary thing was a joke. Like in the game, bronze people are "suck" players. So it reflects on the forums as well. When in fact it's the system that is not good. It's all luck. I can't show people the numbers. If you can't see it, then I can't help.

It just needs fixed.

OhBoyItsaMegaman3 votes

When you have to rely on other players not to feed and not keep feeding, every match is statically stacked against you and it really all comes down to luck of the draw.

If it's "the luck of the draw", shouldn't you (and everybody) have about 50% wins and 50% losses? But they don't. And you don't.

If you improved, you'd be able to start winning Bronze games very easily. But rather than being willing to look at your own performance and find the faults, you'd rather stay where you are than accept that you aren't good yet. Look around you. You will find people who say "I was in Bronze for 2 seasons, then started watching streams and training and now I'm in Gold." That shouldn't be possible if ranked games are a total coin flip.

You're ignoring the fact that all 5 people on the enemy team are subject to all of the crap you're saying against your own team. If your team "feeds and runs around not caring", so does the enemy team. If your team has you and the other team just has idiots, you should win.

Mostly Cloudy1 votes

The chance of winning is not 50/50. It would only be 50/50 if it was 1v1. Your chances of winning a match is a lot lower, because you can't factor in the dumb human behind the seat. Your chances of winning are somewhere around 20%, the rest is luck. If you can't see that, I don't know what to say in explaining the numbers behind it to you.

I haven't played ranked matches again seen last week.

Again, it's bad when just starting to play them again, makes someone want to leave the game.

Lack of actual logic amongst "expert players" on here is highly lacking. The OP is correct. This is a team game and a lot depends on how your team performs against another team. So, like the OP says, the system is trash. Fanboys are going to stick for a system that's common to them. It's not about indiucual play in a team game. They don't seem to have logic, it's a foreign concept.
