When is it gold efficient to upgrade tear. has anyone done the math

whenever i play champs that need it but not need roa i tend to just rush the upgrade of it for the stats but if i need roa i get that before i build my tear into something

I believe the moment it is worth buying item 3003 is when a CHAMPION has a total of 855 mana overall. The mana can come from the champion's base stat, other items, or anywhere else. This is not taking into consideration of the cost effectiveness of the unique passive which refunds 25% mana spent. Judging from this, I think it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE for this item to be gold inefficient. By the time you buy this on any champions with mana (so no Aatrox Akali DrMundo etc.), it is already efficient.
