8-2 in placements ended S4 last season placed B3 this season? Clarification on placement methods?

How does placements work, I am starting to feel like riot just hates me. I know that is not the case I am just curious as to how it works. Last season i was 7-3 in placements and was placed B-4 as well. What is the point in placement matches if it doesn't matter how you do? I ended last season in silver 4 and went 8 and 2 in my placements for this season and was awarded B-3 I do not understand the reasoning. Is there an algorithm used or something? Just looking for a good explanation.

Most people dropped about a tier from where they ended. I was g5 in preseason and s5 after placements.

Oh god does that mean I'm going from s5 to b5? That seems a tad unfair

you always drop significantly that's how the game works... that's why challenger people cant just win 10-0 in their placements and get challenger again.. it's capped at plat 1... you have to climb back...

When people place in ranks, the highest you can achieve is Plat 1, meaning every single player that was diamond 5 and above will be shove down to plat 1 and below , which would subsequently shift everyone that was originally plat 1 and below even more downwards. Hence the majority of people would be placed a full tier below where they were.
