Is this type of behavior normal? I mean, sure, I appreciate the kill gold.... but it doesn't seem quite fair for the poor Maokai who is just trying to sit on my lap or something.

I don't think that is right. It looks like a bug since he didn't actually travel the distance with the dash, but just popped up behind you after you recalled.
