On Game Balance and Fun
Obviously the hot topic on everybody's minds is that this new preseason patch with all the runes just completely broke everything. Now, I've been playing League since around the end of Season 3 on and off. I'm not the best player, nor do I particularly care about competitive. Throughout this period of time, I have seen the rise and fall of many metas and their respective busted "features". In my case, I don't care if something is good or not in the end. Take Ardent Censer for example. I had never had any ire or great death wish on those that balanced it for one simple reason: it was not unfun to play against. There was nothing there that actually was frustrating for me. A game that was completely balanced was never my wish when playing this game, only really to have fun. A counterexample would be that of Galio; every time I play against him, I see him do poorly in lane, have poor trades, get facerolled and go 0/6, aaaaaaand then come back late game as a full-on carry nuker that also has CC, even though the player obviously did not make any good game decisions throughout the course of the game. This is frustrating to me. With the introduction of these new runes, frustration with the whole game in general is magnified. Any essence of intelligent decision making is just thrown out the window, and everybody dies in a few seconds. This is not fun. I like playing the game. If I am either dead or the whole enemy team is dead for most of the game, I am not having fun. I would be very interested to hear what others takes on this topic of fun versus "real game balance" is. Once again, make my game fun, and I couldn't care less about how ADCs were really good last season or how Shield and Heal supports won games.
