lvl 30 with only two rune pages

CoolMeltdown··5 votes·3,375 views

So, today comes the day in every summoner's career when they realize they are one more level left until they are able to get into ranked drafts. My sad realization with this is I still only have two rune pages (Both AD and AP) which I barely had enough IP to complete in the first place (Only because no one told me about rune tiers so I wasted IP on weak runes until I got final tier and read a discussion in the forums on it). Normally, I would be excited to catch up to my friends who have had longer careers and have been level 30 for a while, but it is daunting seeing all of the capabilities of summoners with 7+ rune pages and countless champions (Dynamic = comfortability with adjusting). I feel like I would have a mediocre/ bad rune setup for a "fill in" and end up losing my provisionals landing myself in *Bronze 5 * right off the bat because I take AD on a tank that really isn't too "Tanky," and so on and so forth. This said, I do practice with all of my champions available so i have a pretty good understanding of their characteristics, but runes compliment and drive champions, as well. I haven't really spent money on the game, but I feel like I'm at the crossroads. Either I spend a lot of time on level 30 playing normal games to get IP or cut the time in half by buying and stacking IP boosts and purchasing rune pages. Thoughts?

Rank is a waste of time early on. You should work towards learning champions and match ups. There is so many small things to learn about champions like hit box sizes, auto attack animations, skill shot ranges and so much more. Rune pages do not do much as long as you have them completed you are at the same advantage as another player with the same thing. If you play blind pick then rune pages have much less impact because someone could easily have tons of magic resist as a mid laner and go up against a Talon with nothing but flat AD and no armor pen.

Interesting, like I said I do practice with all of my available champions so I get what you mean about the importance of the attack characteristics. So I will play more blind pick.

Don't waste money on this boring IP sink of runes, you really don't need that many pages, just an AD and an AP. Focus on using IP to buy champions that you like and give ranked a shot after some more practice.

This.

You can play most Champs just fine with 2 rune pages, for the most part. It may not be the most optimal but it'll be damn close to it.

You don't want to get into Ranked immediately anyways, focus on bettering yourself first. Trust me, it'll pay off.

Try having at least 500 normal wins before entering Ranked.

Alright I am taking this into good consideration.

You should probably wait a pretty long time before diving into rank. If you start off before you're experienced you'll lose a lot of games and tank your MMR. Not only will this set you in Bronze, but further losses will continue to lower your MMR so that climbing out takes an exceptionally long time.

Personally, it only took me 60 games to get to Gold 5. It took me 8 months to play those 60 games because I spent a ton of time playing normals, arams, and generally messing around. The knowledge I gleaned from this allowed me to skip through the lowest ranks at a pretty blinding speed. It also gave me time to buy a lot of champions, get several rune pages, and fill them with what I knew was useful.

I didnt bother playing ranked untill I felt comfortable with it, I waited about 1000 games after i was level 30 to really start ranked. you might not want to wait that log, but I would NOT start ranked untill atleast 50 more games after 30

Whenever you hear people complaining about Pay-to-win games, the argument is that money should bestow an advantage, it should just save time. Well, that is how League is set up. If you want to start ranked right at level 30, buy some RP and pick up a 7-page rune bundle and a champion bundle (there is also a champ-owned limit for ranked).

Otherwise, play some blind games to find champions you like, purchase them with IP, then play them in team builder, then start ranked when you are good with them and have saved up IP for more rune pages + runes.

CoolMeltdown1 votes

I am going to get the champions bundle soon and hopefully follow with the rune pages. I have been playing every champion I can in team builder at the moment so it is funny you suggest that. I think it is very helpful. This sounds like a very good plan, thank you!

Cozarkian1 votes

I suggest team builder just because it is the easiest way to guarantee you can play that champion. In blind/draft you can't always get the role you want. Once you start getting good at a role with a few champions, I'd do some draft normals so you can start practicing when to pick each champion.

How about those players that only have 3 champions and enter ranks thinking they will never support

Kyudoka1 votes

they can always learn to support w/ those 3 champs xD

no surpise to see a pantheon/nautilus/rammus/shen/zyra/brand supports heck ive even had a jarvan support at one point

I once played with a Jarvan who was supporting a... Morgana, I think? They stomped lane against a traditional lineup. (Though we lost because I fed mid, hard.)

Jarvan works wonders pretty much anywhere you put him.

Definitely get yourself the 7 Rune Page bundle. While you may be able to get by with 2 Rune Pages it's far from optimal. Especially if you're planning to play Ranked. I have 9 or 10 pages and I still wish I had more.

When you hit 30 learn to play all roles before diving into ranked...you start ranked now you will only be doomed to be a veteran bronze...I've never been in bronze only because i didnt rank till i had at least 400-500 wins in normals and had a decent grasp at the game...

Runes really wont effect your rank too much. Check this guy out; Diamond 3 and only 2 rune pages.

As many people said you shouldn't really go for ranked as soon as you hit 30. If you want to land in high silver, even gold and stay there after provisionals you should play until a figurative level 30-40. As I read you have learnt your main champions, now you should learn proper objective and vision control, when to move with your team to take a tower etc. In all these time you can get IP for a tank rune page, maybe even a 2 for 1 rune page sale will come by. There will be a double IP weekend too. Good luck for solo Q anyway!

The fact that they still even have rune tiers is strait up ridiculous, they are nothing but a total newb trap for people just starting the game. Trundle

i went through the exact same experience as u. during season 3(about 1.5 yrs ago) i started ranked and landed in bronze 3. realized i wasnt rdy yet so i just played normals, now i have 2k normal wins, and bought runes as well as rune pages during the get 2 rune pages for 6300 ip, now i have about 7 rune pages and quite a bit of runes as well as almost all the champs.

during season 4 i landed in bronze 5, how upset i was hahaha, climbed up to gold 5

i never used any $$ to buy champs or rune pages/skins, if u just want to keep those 2 rune pages then ad and ap is the right place to start. if u look on the net ull find good ap and ad rune pages for any champion(i do not mean for that specific champ but for multiple different champs for either ap/ad). the rest is up to your skill as a player as well as masteries. since u can build as many mastery pages as u want, u should be able to make one depending on the matchup or for certain champions

Once you feel serious enough about ranked, the 7 rune page bundle is the best investment you can get from RP.

I made it to level 30 and got into Silver 1 without runes, you'll do just fine.

Go to the forums, find a good ADC, play support (almost no one ever wants it), carry bottom lane and win games. Two rune pages should be enough for pretty much all the supports. Also, as a support, you can control vision, set up team fights, help get your ADC fed and hopefully dictate some game play. That being said, more often than not, my support motto is: Win Lane, Lose Game - Support Woes.

You don't need many rune pages to be able to stand toe-to-toe with other ranked players. I get by with just 4, and I didn't even have a 3rd rune page until i hit gold in season 3. Just make sure your runes right now fit the two main roles you are best at and you should be fine. Runes only provide a small edge early game, so you don't need to spend tons of games grinding for ip unless you begin to feel like that small early game stat difference is costing you a lot of kills when playing champs that don't fit your runes.

You honestly probably aren't ready for ranked yet. At least if you want to be gold or higher. Hitting 30 doesn't mean much, all it really does is guarantee you have access to ranked and a full page of runes/mastery slot/points. As far as runes go, yes, it is more optimal to have a specific rune set up in a given scenario, I feel you probably aren't up to the level where they actually make that "real" difference. Yes, having that extra 50 hp at level 1 could help you in lane, but if the person you are against hits you one extra time in a trade before they go to finish you off, it didn't really make much of a difference.

I say it would be best for you to play with your current two standard pages and see how well you can do with them. Buy champions that you like and focus on learning them and mastering them. Once you have a champion pool you like, then start buying rune pages and then consider going into ranked.

Doogmi1 votes

To me runes have been more about the early game, and you can always play safe if your rune set up isn't optimal for your position/champion. I pretty much agree rushing ranked may not be the best idea. Maining a champ/position will help your ability to win/carry games. Also there are some things you only learn by playing ranked. So many people don't take normals seriously and you won't get to see effective roaming, warding, objective controll, team compositions, and mechanics because "its just a norm" these days. This isn't always the case. But more so has become the standard over the years.

I'm telling you. Do not play ranked for a long while. You will do the same thing I did. Super excited to start playing ranked play and climbing up the ranks but instead tanking your mmr and having a hell of a fight getting out. Just don't do it, trust me. If I hadn't done what I did, I wouldn't be where I am now. Just play normal draft. It's no different and you also get a normal rank that you can look at in your profile page. It's just not "official".

As far as rune pages go, an AD page and AP page is perfectly fine and you honestly don't need more than that. If you have the money and you enjoy the game, buy some more pages and boosts. There's nothing wrong with spending money on a hobby. I do it. But as far as the advantage someone has over you with a specific rune page compared to a general one is barely anything. However there is a strong difference in 0 rune pages vs having one since cs'ing is 100x easier with one.
