What happened to thresh?

Hi guys!

  • I just wanted to know why thresh is doing worse in this new s5 meta. On paper he had all the proper tankiness and utility supports have if not even more. But statistics and just regular gameplay just don't support it. So I just want to if there was a reason why he is so behind other supports all of a sudden such as Leona blitz and Janna. I really want to get better with him but I'm it sure if it's worth it or not. Is thresh still the ban/pick champ he was before?

Let me know what you think down below

They removed his AoE shield and removed a massive amount of damage off of his R.

They did this in July. Surely we would have seen the drop-off in July/August instead of November/December if this is why he's no longer played.

Still one of the best supports. Thresh will literally never be bad, his kit just offers too much.

Thresh is more difficult to play but he is also a very popular, meta support. This means that a lot of players who don't know how to play him will probably be picking him because he is used by pro players.

There is also the fact that Leona and Blitzcrank are great at punishing players who mis-position in lane and picking people off later in the game, so they are easy to play with at low ELO.

It took a while for the whole "best support in the game" thing to die down. Especially with all the free armor he got making into the team's off tank. (In a meta where tanks have no place to go but support and a few junglers.)

Not sure if I agree with tanks having no place outside of support or jungle in the current meta. I've been having a lot of luck with Sejuani and Nautilus in the jungle. I've also been using Nasus and Mundo (and occasionally Maokai, Singed, and Cho'gath) top without too much of an issue.

This is personal experience so it's subjective, but that's just what I've found. I don't really pay much attention to pro play, so I can't comment on that.

Nasus and Mundo are Bruisers, not Tanks. Though the other three have been long time top lane terrors. (The rise of Ryse and other ranged tops hurt their pick rates for a little while was all.)

Thresh is a high skillcap champion. It was always funny to see an high skill intensive champion with a winrate like that. He's fine.

Annie Zyra Morgana counter him, but otherwise he's still a huge threat when played properly.

Champions with huge pick rates tend to have failing win rates, too, unless they're seriously so powerful that it's hard to fail with them.
