Rek'Sai's Ultimate is underwhelming for such a great champ

snowl··11 votes·18,314 views

Rek'Sai seems like such a great champion in practice, with the unique tunnel/burrow mechanic and her scary ultimate.

Except her ultimate isn't scary. At all.

The problem is that you have to target a tunnel to go anywhere. This becomes a problem when you have played more than one game with Rek'Sai. How are you supposed to initiate or gank with this ultimate at all? The enemy knows exactly where your tunnels are if your tunnels are in any position that could be used for a gank, and can step on them without any harm. What are you going to do, ult on them when they step on the tunnel? Good joke, your ultimate has a 1.5 second cast time that tells any enemy that you are heading towards them so they can retreat before you even start heading towards them. They have slow reaction times? Don't worry, they will usually have a movement ability that will completely negate your ultimate.

The only use for Rek'Sai I could find is travelling to Dragon/Baron (depending on what side you are so you can set your tunnel safely behind) to be able to contest easily or having the ability to teleport to top/mid/bot entrance quickly. Tunnels in the jungle are worthless (in the context of the ultimate) because they give no vision even when the enemy is standing on them so you can't quickly teleport to an invader.

Riot, what was your vision for this ultimate? I think the mechanics of it should be adjusted a little (either give Tunnels an invulnerability period of say, 2 minutes or maybe give Rek'Sai an invisibility period of 2 seconds after teleporting to a tunnel to give her time to position to Unburrow on an unsuspecting enemy. She's underground!).

Thanks!

With Rek'Sai we deliberately did something a bit different with her ultimate. Given she's a form swapper, with more than the usual 4 skills, she already had access to a pretty large set of tools to use in combat and didn't need another. As a result we opted to go for a more strategic, less mid combat ult. Something that's used to get around the map, in preparation for combat/objectives/counter jungling/split pushing etc, rather than to put you into a great position to fight almost immediately (like TF, Panth, Nocturne can do for example).

It's not as powerful as many other ults in the game overall either and that's also deliberate for a couple of reasons. Having more spells than average means each individual spell's going to have to be weaker than average for the sake of balance and we wanted to put a lot of power into the defining, most distinctive parts, of Rek'Sai's kit, her Tremor Sense and Tunnels.

It can definitely be pretty tough getting, and keeping, a sufficient tunnel network to ult well, particularly as your enemies get better at stomping her tunnels quickly in all the 'best' places. Figuring out where to put them, when, whether to ward around them, which enemies to track etc are some of the key skills we expect to see dedicated Rek'Sai players get really good at though. That's something that's pretty exciting to us since those aren't skills that other champions test in particularly similar ways.

I think it'll be recognized as powerful once someone takes her splitpush to its limits. She'll have escapes for days and then could, in theory, ult right back over towards the turret (which won't run away from the sound of her ult, hah) and then rinse and repeat escaping. I'm personally very excited about this and will be mega disappointed if she gets the Shen treatment. It's no fun to have a main permabanned and then nerfed into obscurity. I heard someone say a couple weeks ago that Shen has a bad ultimate,...how easily people forget.

I think her ult is pretty interesting and different, which i like. It will help her get to teamfights easier and we will also have to consider, where to place a tunnel. I think it's really awesome how she can just travel across the map under ground :)

Sound reasoning.

Although I do think it would be awesome if she dealt damage to any champs she passes through en route.

Now hold on a second. how can you say all of that when LEE SIN EXISTS.

vscAloha1 votes

Lee Sin is not a form swapper. The extra "Abilities" are actually effects tied into his 4 abilities that you can opt into depending on your situation, at the cost of energy, a very limiting resource.

Jingerbeardman2 votes

I totally understand your reasoning for her ultimate. She does have access to more skills but they really are not that powerful. tremor sense is great but to call it accurate in the way it tracks movement is pretty exaggerated. Champion movement tracking is so inaccurate as the game progresses, especially on faster champions. it is fine with slower moving champs and monsters like the scuttle crab as they pulse more frequently, but faster moving champs pulse so infrequently that it is deceiving.

If prey seeker actually did halfway decent damage then I could understand this disparity, but it doesn't. If she fully revealed champions she hit with prey seeker it might make sense, but she doesn't. if she had a little better vision range while burrowed it might make sense, but she only sees in her immediate proximity.

Then there are the tunnels. Sure, you can have 8 out at a time, but the instant the enemy team sees one it is permanently revealed on their minimap. They might last 10 minutes, but they are destroyed in a second if they stand on it...? I want to elaborate on this point a little more. I have never heard of a tunnel collapsing from someone standing at its entrance and just looking at it... it makes no sense. If the idea is that they are standing on top of the tunnel to force it to crumble wouldnt they end up getting trapped as it collapsed? that would be kind of a cool tradeoff actually for destroying a tunnel, it rooted you for a little bit (like .75-1 second) so there was actually a decision to be made when destroying it. It would also make an interesting mechanic in team fights in that if rek'sai tunneled into the middle of a fight and someone sat to long on the tunnel exit/entrance they get rooted for a moment as consequence. Then there is the fact that they give 5 gold for destroying them, "hey there, good job standing still in that spot for a second, here is 5 gold"... really? I had given this feedback on the PBE forum as well, there NEEDS to be a real tradeoff when it comes to destroying tunnels. Making someone stand in a spot for 3 seconds, root them when it collapses, something. I know why channeling to destroy them isn't an option, I get that, but just giving free gold to the enemy team for no time investment is just BS.

Then there is Burrow and Unburrow. I love this ability and its concept... except for the fact that unburrowing on a target a second time before the 10 seconds for the next knock up is ready deals no damage. She already has a limited number of damage sources outside of auto attacking, was it really necessary to add this limitation as well?

I like Rek'sai, I really do, but some of the decisions that were made feel poorly thought out... I don't mean to step on anyone's toes but it really feels that way.

Quoting for emphasis.

Literally everything Riot says is hard countered by the existence of Lee Sin.

Why won't you fix what is killing your game?

Have fun spending the next however many seasons you have left trying to fix the jungle when the solution was to fire the idiot who thought a guy with seven moves who could do any role, fit any teamcomp, build literally any six items (maybe not tear... maybe) and be able to make every decision in regards to every engage meaning you have to be a literal vegetable to not at least do well with him was a sensible idea. Or maybe the guy was just joking around and is as jaw-droppingly amazed as the rest of us are that you let him off the drawing board in the first place?

CertaintyT gets some well deserved shit for overloading champs in order to sell them but even Thresh and Darius at their worst are not as game warpingly stupid as Lee Sin. And his champs eventually get toned down to something approaching reasonable once Riot's made their money off them. I like all the new stuff Thresh has, right up until his stupid attack range and bonus magic damage for no damn reason. Passives having passives!

I know you like to preserve champion identity when handing out nerfs (unless you're a support, tank, or immobile mage, then you can just quite politely fuck straight off). Lee Sin's identity is being the best at everything, having the most moves, having the most options. So yeah, some delicate little LCS flowers are going to weep real tears if your balance department ever takes the blinders off and decides to do their jobs in regards to the one reason why the jungle has sucked for three seasons and is about to suck for another one.

ORRRRRRRRRRR you can continue pretending the problem doesn't exist. Which is what we are expecting of you.

Regarding other things the balance team needs to fix:

  1. I don't play Cassiopeia but holy shit how do you fuck up a poison snake this badly. I feel bad for Cass mains (and I play junglers like Sejuani and Evelynn and maybe Rek'Sai and not Lee Sin). Straight up just revert her back to what she was before you ruined her and start again. This time, with somebody who knows what the definition of poison is at the wheel.
  2. Several months ago you nerfed Lux. Unnerf her, please. Give her her ms back, at the very least. You nerfed her because she was one of the few immobile mages who could still go mid against all the hypermobile ad assassins you keep shitting out and your solution was to nerf her instead. Light goes fast. Also, fyi you can see light in bushes GAMEBREAKINGLY OP Lee Sin is fine tho~
  3. Holy Christ can you do something about a lithe scrawny stealthy assassin's best build being FULL TANK and being LITERALLY UNABLE TO KILL ANYTHING? Eve's roles are still assassin mage and her only viable build (I should say most viable, it still sucks) is ad tank. Whoops. No damage, no endurance, barely any cc. Maybe you should class invisibility with mobility and then redo her power budget (since mobility costs NOTHING to ANYONE as long as you have lots of it!). Or just put her stealth back on a button like what should have happened two years ago but who am I to judge? At one point at the end of S4 I was jungling Evelynn and Sejuani WITH THE EXACT SAME BUILD. (Got to gold with them!) THIS IS NOT OKAY.

This is going to blow your mind: WARD JUMPING IS DUMB AND THE ONLY CHAMPS WHO DO IT ARE CONSISTENTLY PROBLEM CASES. Maybe start there? ~Uiru

The attack speed is fantastic, however. ALWAYS noticed that.

Exactly what kind of champ do people think Rek is? And why the hell do they want to make her ridiculously OP?

How about people actually learn how to play her WELL before asking for game breaking changes. I think she's just fine the way she is. The amount of map pressure and control she can exert is pretty ridiculous.

She's a strategic champ instead of a tactic/fighting champ. Riot don't output them often so people aren't used to them. And then again, even our strategic champs usually have some pretty nice tactic power too! Just have to wait untill people figure her out.

you realize that every champion with global presence through their ultimate has been incredibly strong at some point only because of that ability? and they all have either huge restrictions on where they can ult to, or have MASSIVE cast times that telegraph their position?

There aren't restrictions on global ults but rek'sai's...... shen can ult to any teammate draven can ult anywhere same with ez ashe jinx and gp. Rek'sai's the only champ that has to have an item set up so she can ult.

shen has to go to a teammate. ez, ashe, draven don't have global presence with their ults, just global range. twisted fate and pantheon have huge telegraphs and cast animations, nocturne has to go to an enemy, and rek'sai has to go to one of her tunnels. her ult is still incredibly powerful and putting tunnels in interesting locations that the enemy doesn't think to look or will get punished for trying to destroy them is a part of playing rek'sai.

Exactly my point. No. Setup. Needed. none of those champions have to set anything up before using there ults. There's also no "interesting" locations to put her tunnels. If you put it in a bush they will find it. If you put in in the open they will find it.

This.

I think it won't really be a gank tool. More of a strategic mobility tool. Put a tunnel in their jungle, get ahead of the fleeing enemy team by ulting ahead of them and popping in their face. Or put one near blue and red buff, if you see the jungler killing your tunnel near blue, ult in their red to steal it. Buff for buff. Put one around toplane, gank bot. When the toplaner goes agressive in return, ult top and make him pay for a 2-gank streak.

Then you have all the splitpushing for lategame.

Except with those ultimates you have no restrictions on where you can teleport to. Rek'Sai requires setup before time and then you still have the same time as other ultimates to teleport to that location. Except Rek'Sai can't teleport to any location within a range - you can only teleport to tunnels which have a weakness that make them useless for ganking.

Set up tunnels in safe positions or tell your teammates to guard them. Positioning one behind a lane turret can be a good spot since the enemy can't destroy it easily.

Alternatively, you can play mindgames with her tunnels and fake a gank. The enemy might retreat.

The problem with that is how will your teammates know there being destroyed if they don't provide vision? Also why would your teammates take time out of there laning to save one of your tunnels when they shouldn't have been able to be destroyed in the first place? Why would the enemy retreat when they could easily wait at your tunnel (if they know they can out trade you) and cheese kill you? The tunnels should have some sort of defense like they should be invincible but the number of tunnels you can put are reduced or that they turn invisible.

Did I miss something? I tought Rek'sai would see them being destroyed at least. edit : Nvm they don't provide vision, but I can't see rek'sai not having a way to see if the tunnel is destroyed or not. And in the worst case, there's always wards.

She can be fairly strong built as a brusier. Devourer is honestly terrible on her, she benefits so much more from Warrior and Visage/Sunfire than she does from Devourer/Hydra.

Haven't played Rek'Sai yet but from games where I've had her as a teammate her ult is awesome. Her tunnels+ult allow her to lane gank super easily and then quickly return for another gank. It's really cool to top lane with a tunnel in the bushes know your Rek'Sai's ulti is up and you have the safety of getting a gank or countergank at almost any moment.

Optical Pumpkin2 votes

My 2 cents... this is one of the most broken ults ever if you know how to use your burrowed E. I just went 18 kills, 0 deaths in a game and secured every dragon and baron. RekSai

Put a tunnel near every lane, a visible one. The enemy needs to see it. Place it within turret range or JUST outside it. Put 2 near dragon and use the others when ever (rotate the ones at turrets). You can bait for yourself and once you get to it its an instant knock up.

Your laner is missing and they are hitting your turret? You are guaranteed a knock up on anyone hitting your towers. With your kit noone should get away from that. Not even Shyvanas are safe. You can easily reverse a ganking enemy (knock up for happy team :3. You can easily make yourself available to dragons. It gets to a point when you can show up for everything you need to.

I haven't even messed with split pushing because so far, all my lanes always win because of Rek Sai's overwhelming presence.

But hey, its not a damage ult. Its a strategic ult. Growl

xakannax1 votes

^^^This, put tunnels at all the key strategic points as you roam around, you will want them later. Your ult has a 60/70 second cd at max, thats a shit ton of teleports.

Ive easily tanken 7/8 turrets in a game simply by being everywhere while still ganking and securing mad kills. Her mobility and map presence is absurd and her burst damage is really really really strong.

Only real downside is you have no slow of any kind and are dependent on smite items, exhaust, flash etc and lots of ms to stay on top of kiting heros. If they dont die in the first few seconds after you knockup it gets really awkward sometimes :p

Would be REALLY REALLY NICE if riot added a slow to the burrowed q poke (totally ok with a damage nerf for that)

causeimdabatman2 votes

I honestly have no clue what kind of people you play against because they obviously must suck. When i play against rek'sai i know to check every bush and fog of war spot within a large radius and ward because of her tunnels. It doesn't take much time to destroy them so i can walk out of lane for 5 seconds and destroy like 3-4 of her tunnels because there so huge and obvious. You can't shorten the distance of the tunnels so there either always in bushes or protruding out of a wall. Also everyone who thinks her ult makes you retreat, it really doesn't (if she can even ult because lack of tunnels).

360D3GR3SS1 votes

It's strong, but her tunnels usually do not stay around long enough for her to make use of it.

Ale non è male1 votes

People forget to account for the big passive AS boost that Rek'Sai recevie passively on her ulti(especially at max rank) that allows her to sustain a lot when burrowed or hit like a truck with Furious Bite when unburrowed

Ale non è male1 votes

And I'll add, the threat of your ulti global presence, force the enemy team to make a lot of decision about if destroy known tunnels to prevent rek'sai to move around like crazy or go straight to take objectives, and if the enemy do a wrong decision, they can nullify the advantage they can get upon a win fight, or open up for further opporutiniy(because if one champ decide to go away from his mates and destroy a tunnel, this open up an opportunity to force an engage with a numerical advantage in a fight)

It's painful to play against a Rek'Sai if your team sucks as decision making and lack the ability to properly act and react to the various situations and threats Rek'Sai kit can create with tunnel mobility, burrow/unburrow, jugling and counterjungling, dueling abilities, etc...

I use it for map control, as she is not much of a ganker. I will use it to be in the places I need to be, even if it's ulting to Baron/Dragon/even a large creep wave I can push.

It's up to the player to put her tunnels in places that they aren't likely to be found or stepped on, and to roam around continuously putting more in as she goes. Use it to get around your own jungle, or your opponent's after taking their outer turrets, and you'll always have tunnels available somewhere. They last for quite a long time and I honestly found many of my tunnels, even in the enemy's jungle, were timing out before they got stepped on more often than not.

You aren't supposed to be ulting directly into teamfights, you're supposed to be ulting near to one so you can pick the best entry point into it. Try not to use it as a combat tool like other ults, instead use it for what it's meant for: utility.

For instance at one point last night I pushed bot inhib, backed up a bit, and as three enemies came barreling towards me I ulted to a tunnel I had near their top lane and proceeded to push down that inhib as well. By the time they ran up to stop me I dug underneath a wall and made a clean getaway.

From what I've gathered so far, playing with Rek'Sai is about thinking outside of the box. She's different, and should be approached differently.
