Daily reminder about AP items

Daily reminder that mage items are cheaper and more efficient, change my mind!

item 3155 vs item 3191 item 3155 : 1300 gold +20 attack damage +35 magic resistance UNIQUE – LIFELINE: If you would take magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, you first gain a shield that absorbs 110 − 280 (based on level) magic damage for 5 seconds (90 second cooldown). item 3191 : 1100 gold +20 ability power (35 ability power) +30 armor (45 armor) UNIQUE: Killing a unit grants 0.5 bonus ability power and armor, stacking up to 30 times for a maximum of 15 bonus ability power and armor.

Now let's look at the passives, since the numbers should be quite simple to compare. Hexdrinker's named passive is LIFELINE, which gives you a magic damage shield for 5s when you drop below 30% health. It sounds good in theory, but then you realize that LIFELINE is also the passive for Phantom Dancer and Sterak's Gage, which effectively invalidates 2 item choices just for countering a mage.

Seeker's Armguard has an unnamed passive which grants it scaling on unit, giving it 0.5 AP and armor per unit, stacking up to 30. Since the passive is unnamed, it invalidates no other items.

Well, it looks like Hexdrinker is the better option here, I mean who needs Sterak's Gage or Phantom Dancer when you have the glorious Hexdrinker which builds into the Maw of Malmortius, while the mage option builds into Zhonya's Hourglass.

item 3156 : 3250 ( 1950 finish cost with Hexdrinker ) +50 attack damage +10% cooldown reduction +50 magic resistance UNIQUE – LIFELINE: If you would take magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, you first gain a shield that absorbs 350 magic damage for 5 seconds UNIQUE – LIFEGRIP: Grants +20 attack damage, +10% spell vamp and +10% life steal until out-of-combat.

item 3157 : 2900 ( 1800 finish cost with Seeker's Armguard ) +75 ability power +45 armor +10% cooldown reduction UNIQUE – STASIS: Put yourself in Stasis icon stasis for 2.5 seconds, rendering yourself untargetable and invulnerable for the duration, but also unable to move, attack, cast spells, or use items during this time (120 second cooldown).

Looking at the stats, you can see that the clear difference. But that is not all! Maw's passive, also sharing the name LIFELINE, grants you a glorious 350 magic damage shield ( a single akali Q damage by the time you build it on average) and a nice 20AD and spell vamp(?) and 10% lifesteal. It almost sounds good until you realize this procs when you are at 30% hp, and the 20AD and lifesteal are not gonna help you survive facing a mage at 30% hp. Now let's check out the other pass- Oh wait, it is actually an active! An active considered one of the best in the game and probably most crucial in the esports scene! An active that effectively removes your champion from the game for 2.5s, allowing you to dodge: skillshots, DoT effects, stuns, targeted abilities, auto attacks or simply said, literally anything. But the funniest part is the 350 gold difference between these 2 items. Even though the Maw locks you out of two other items, even though it has an inferior UNIQUE effect, even though it loses in stats to the Zhonya's hourglass, it still costs MORE than the Zhonya's hourglass, which is built by almost every single mage.

Change my mind boards! Convince me that this is correct design! I am open for discussion!

Comparing the most powerful single button press in the game to the most overloaded statball item in the game? Apples to oranges, my friend, although golden eggs to dragon’s teeth might be a bit more appropriate.

Zhonyas has better stats than Maw? Idk what youre looking at, but I see Maw having more MR than Zhonyas has armor, and 50 AD is worth a lot more than 75 AP lol.

Zhonyas active is good but it also has 2 minutes cooldown, doesnt work in cc and it also locks you out of doing anything. Maw has a lower cooldown and its automatic. And it gives you permanent omnivamp + more damage for the fight

Hm...yes you're right. Maw's stats do look significantly better considering the conversion rate for AP to AD has always been 1 AD = 2 AP, and magic resist is better overall than armor because with higher magic resist you block an entire combo of a champion, after which they have nothing left, whereas with armor you need more because auto attacks are a thing. Hmm...maw is looking more powerful by the minute, the only thing Zhonya's has going for it is the active, which I'll admit is powerful, try again though. Maw trivializes AP burst until you have a Void Staff, Zhonya's doesn't. But really if you wanted to compare Maw to an AP item you should have compared it to Banshee's Veil, as they're the similar things in this scenario.

Stat wise, Maw wins hands down. Zhonya's has the best active in the game, I'll admit, mainly because it allows you to blow cooldowns, but that's really all it's good for.

You can't really compare anything to Zhonya's because it has always been the best item in the game.
