There are no mages, only AP bruisers.

With items such as Liandry's Torment, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, and Rod of Ages, it seems like all ability power building champions always end up as semi tanks, which are impossible to one shot, but can one shot whoever they are facing. Assassins are forced to build pure damage items, giving them high risk but high reward gameplay. Mages on the other hand seem to be forgiven much more with the amound of health they get. On average, a Swain, Aurelion Sol, or Brand will end up with 3,000+ hp towards the end of the game, often cherry topped with a fairly large shield. I say there are only AP bruisers, when in reality they are superior, as even bruisers cannot kill them efficiently. However, I am only silver, so what do I know?

Compared to the actual bruisers, Mages are ranged and can kite a large majority of the bruiser class with a simple Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Also, with flash being such a forgiving summoner, it's easy for bruisers, who have to use their engage, if they have any, in order to reach them, and only get kited in return. Once they reach them, they will more than likely not kill the "mage" due to its massive health pool and assortment of slows and stuns.

Most tanky mages (e.g. Swain, Asol, Lissandra) will end up with 2500 health give or take, and neither have a shield of any kind. without, say, aftershock or some other rune/summoners, although most bruisers have a shield or some form of easy sustain that they can rely on (Swain is a sustain mage so that can be excused). The difference between assassins and mages is that the former screws on anyone too close and the latter screws on anyone too far away. Any remotely fed assassin can still oneshot them before they can use any utility tools, but managing to cc an assassin would basically guarantee death in a teamfight. Also Rylai's is Frozen mallet for mages, so you can't say that you don't have access these same tools. Flash is what's called a base summoner, meaning basically everyone uses it with a few exceptions, but that's easy to figure out anyway. Basically, flash is a mage's only real escape tool (barring champs like azir) Kiting is a bit of an odd subject, saying that most mages have no form of useful mobility or dash, something every assassin and most bruisers have. But what do I know, I'm only silver.

why isn't everyone only playing mages then?

Because most players, such as myself, wish to play champions that are "fun" and not just a champion that can win me my game. Although League hasn't been fun for sometime now.

apart from azir, his onhit stuff and attack speed actually lets him get quite a bit of tower damage per minion wave.
