The Keystone Masteries are Terrible

Sakuretsu··17 votes·2,149 views

Personally i hate the new masteries because they give me choices that i don't particularly want or need, in the ferocity tree for example i never took double edged sword and i never took feast in the old masteries, but now you're telling me i have to pick one in order to get to a higher tier. The masteries should go back to the way they were or at least don't make it so if you want to completely max out a certain tree you should be able to. Or who knows maybe i'm just crazy and a hater.

I agree in many respects. I been playing in the PBE and really, after taking a good while of trying to design the BEST masteries. It only favored the player who built crit hands down.

15% Heal? ON CRIT. Build a bloodthirster and dying is a thing of the past. I decided to test to see if it was super broken, so I feed my top laner (Tower diving, stupid engages, not warding ect.) with yasuo. Yeah, still came back after i got statikk shiv and Infinity Edge. I could heal to about 50% or so, from a single wave. An my damage was through the ROOF.

Riot is making ADCs, Attack Damage Assassins just stomp on the poor mages this time around. It's all about the early game now, and mages need time to slide into there "100-O" spot. But, why not pick an ADC mid... and just shove lanes and win? It's kinda ridiculous.

I feel riot is doing TO MUCH again. Like they did with Tahm Kench, and Yasuo, and the "Juggernauts". They keeps bumping the scale HARD, then let champions completely plummet in the process. They should make a base line, get ALL champions TO that baseline then introduce new things.

They had the baseline before, it was at a good level. Then they decided to inject growth hormones into it and tip the scales HUGELY in certain champion gameplay, and they did that to champions that were already at or above the baseline. So this just furthered the gap between those "OP" champs and their lesser counterparts. There is always be "OP" champs, that is just how it is in every game like this, but you can not give huge bonuses without giving a proper way to counter them.

In this case there is no real way to counter it, or you will have to play a champion that you normally do not like to play just to be on par with the enemy. But is there really going to be a counter for that?

I feel that Riot has really dropped the ball here, they pushed out too massive of a change in a short amount of time, and they really have not adjusted it since.

A) it's been less than a week B) 'adjustments' are already in the works.

I'm not talking about just this patch, that was more geared towards the juggernauts patch and the very little adjustments that have been made to balance them since then. This patch just added on to that even more. Hence why I said they are pushing out too much of a change in a short amount of time.

i main Twisted Fate mid and i was super disappointed when i came up vs a zed the first game because i knew he was going to absolutely stomp me because of the preseason update. everything they did was like a backhand to most mages and this update is just bad i really hope they head the words of the players on this one and fix things

Honestly just reading the patch notes I felt like AD assassins would be WAY overloaded. Waiting to see talon and zed everywhere.

New masteries are actually meaningful. The old ones were like .3% of tons of different things. They might need tweaking but I like the direction they're taking.

Sakuretsu2 votes

I dont mean to be rude here but how do you like the new masteries, yeah the old ones gave small bonuses compared to the new ones but atleast with the old you had more than 2 options to choose from and didnt make any champs ahem Yasuo broken AF with the crit heal.

Voidbringers4 votes

It's the preseason - you must be new.

Sakuretsu2 votes

no actually ive been here since the last week of beta but they have never done something this bad before

Mathbalnase1 votes

Then you should be well familiar with the fact that shit breaks in the preseason.

Also, nerfs incoming for Warlord's

Onegarion1 votes

I really don't see the new masteries as meaningful outside of the keystone masteries and you could easily just make them into the old mastery tree with the same results. Right now I fell more forced into certain masteries because one is just bad for my pick, but the others isn't exactly good. Before I had an option to pick a couple of different options. Even looking at the first teir of the defense tree I had 4 options: Reduced monster damage, Reduced champion damage, Tenacity, and increased HP regen. I could combine them in any way I wanted. Now i get 2 options that aren't always best for my situation. Right now you get mostly 2 options; Direct damage increases or a utility. Personally I would like more options to pick from.

Its also worth noting that while .3% may not seem like a lot, you are doing it with multiple masteries so it does expand and grow. You gain more overall. Dealing 3% extra damage in one mastery followed by 4% in another and 5% in the last increases it a lot overall. Its doing almost the same as it is now, but with the added keystone effects.

The new masteries are so bad. You have no chose in how you truly want to spend your points

The JigSAW2 votes

The new masteries are a form of cancer like we've never had in this game. Try playing against a Trynd with Warlord's Bloodlust who can crit and heal for 15% of it every SECOND. These masteries gotta go, period. Obviously there are people trolling with picking "oh the new masteries are fine' but I seriously doubt there will be no changes to them after the games I've seen today. This is the worst excuse for 'balance' I've ever seen attempted on this game and that's saying something.

Sakuretsu2 votes

I've played this game since the last week of beta and this last update has made me actually think about not playing anymore and thats after all the shit they have done up to this point was somewhat bearable but this is just bad on your part rito

That's not a reasonable thing to expect from a preseason. It's quite likely that some new masteries will need to be nerfed, others may need to be buffed. That's fine. The thing is, some masteries are ACTUALLY NOTICEABLE now, which they weren't before. Even if it's sometimes noticeable in a "man, that guy is a bitch to deal with now" way.

The new masteries are a definite step forward in concept, may need some numbers tweaks but that's what the preseason is for.

yes i understand thats what the preseason is for but they should not have messed with something that no one was complaining about in the first place, and second the new masteries make custom play for most ap champs really difficult to do now

So one mastery being broken on two champions makes the entire mastery system the worst thing that's ever happened to the game? Really?

The JigSAW1 votes

I said, in the quote, the worst excuse for balance I've ever seen attempted on this game, not the worst thing that's ever happened. Its right in the quoted text if you don't believe me. Frankly, the fact this passed any quality control is a red flag right there this is going to turn into everything going OP like the DOTA route.

But, doesn't matter what we say. The only input that matters is any pro, period, the rest of us just live with it even though we pay for their tournaments, their prize money, the servers, etc etc. When do we stand up and say enough is enough and do something about it? Remember when they nerfed runes in lifesteal because 5-6% was too much? New masteries have 7% lifesteal at the start, PLUS up to 4.5% on runes, PLUS 15% heal off any crit on LEVEL 1 BEFORE you buy a single item. Let that sink in.

Huh? The masteries only give 2% Lifesteal, and LS/SV were already in the masteries before, just in a different tree. 15% heal on crit is obviously different but there's lots of stuff in the keystone masteries that wouldn't have been there before. We wouldn't have had "Take 8% less damage" before either, nor something like Deathfire Touch.

The JigSAW1 votes

And most of it bad. I'm far, far less concerned about Deathfire Touch than Warlord's Bloodlust. We had lifesteal nerfed in the runes a year or so ago from 5 or 6% to 4.5%, but with the runes and new masteries you can go around 8% before any other LS item. There's also an ability to steal health from an attacker (Grasp of the Undying) every 4 seconds relating to your maximum health which basically also is a lifesteal effect. So, the changes are obviously heading in a worse direction.

I understand that Riot is trying to get new players by making the game easier but by doing that they are going to lose so much old player, it's sad to see how this game have become. I'm afraid that even I who had played this game since season 1 will have to leave since this game seem to not take care of his player. If they want to keep their player they will have to make surveys and APPLY the things that need fixes. In short what Ì want to say is REMOVE THE NEW MASTERY PAGE it's terrible, players don't even know what to boost to get maximum efficiency of their champion. Anyway I hope this message will be read by the riot team so this way things might change.item 3070

The masteries right now are shit and I wish they'd revert it to how it used to be. The reason they're shit is because they force you into a category. You're either a damage dealer, a damage sponge, or a weak ass support. You can't dip into other trees effectively anymore to find a 50/50 balance of support with damage (just an example). I don't get why they decided to change the masteries in the first place as I've never heard anyone complain about them. Definitely thinking that if they don't change them or add more options that I may not play next season like some people have stated already. Oh and fuck them forcing talents down our throats to get further in the tree. We get to choose between 3 turds and we pick whichever smells less like shit.

General Kenoobi2 votes

How is oversimplifying the masteries giving me options and impactful choice? Instead of being able to custom build your way up various masteries, we have to dump up one tree or another with masteries that may or may not help a character to get to the good ones at the end. I'm going to keep playing around with them, hopefully there are some kind of master mechanics at work here that elude me, because I feel like this new mastery system is horrible. Not to mention, How am I supposed to build AD MALZ now? T_T

What Riot tends to fail out is the term, "Don't fix what's not broken."

They have to always DRASTICALLY change things that were fine.

"Lets make Juggernauts SUPER broken and have them be huge tanks with 5k health an the ability to drop 62k damage a game."

Or... Just don't.

"Lets give our new champions coming out, as SHIT ton of stats and abilities that you must have a PHD in nuclear science to understand. Then PROCEED to nerf them into the ground. Or just have them downright terrible on release that no one plays them!"

Or...Just don't

"People complained ON PBE how they shouldn't release things, but WE DON'T CARE :D"

Yeah thanks Riot.

Riot is NOTORIOUS for not listening to the players, and when things go sour, keyboard warriors come to defend them to have good face. I would LOVE to seem them add things bit by bit. See what happens and then make changes, instead of "YEAH HERE'S A BOX OF SHIT!" that just leaves players confused.
