Explain to me how nexus siege is a game
as far as i can tell, if the first defending team makes it past 20, they win?

Not if you match their twenty.
if start by defending , you must try to defend your base until the 20min mark xD
if they don't destory your base by 20 min y'all wil swap and you got 20min to destory theirs xD
if you defend till 12min than you must destory their base by 12min !

team A team B
Team A tries to get to the nexus to win as fast as possible, team B tries to stop them for 20 minutes.
then both teams switch sides
Lets suppose team B was able to defend the nexus for X minutes.
If X = 20 minutes then to win the entire match then the other team must beat this record in order to win. Same goes for if its 15 minutes or 10 minutes.
X = 10 minutes and 30 seconds
Team B defended and now is on offense and must try to win in less than 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
