The starting items for Thresh really should be changed to Ancient Coin. New players are building Relic Shield and then spend the first 10 mins of the game trying to last hit minions making there ADC life a nightmare.
Also the Active for 40% move speed is crazy good for his kit.
HalloweenDeath2 votesMost players still get relic shield as it is better then coin if you know how to last hit and ping the minions you plan to last hit with. Thresh is by far the easiest meta support to last hit with because of his e and that he does damage based on how many souls he collects. Even early game this makes csing a fucking piece of cake if you just don't autoattack anyone for a few seconds before the cannon minion shows up. The recommended build should be there for people to very quickly get the very common items. On thresh the relic shield is by far the most popular item and it will stay that way even if you make the recommended item the coin.
DeathBurst2 votesActually, the recommended item was coin until recently, and half the Thresh in low Silver would still pick the shield, so changing the recommended item to shield was just acknowledging what was already happening despite Riot advice.
(Personally, I'm not so sure that shield is always better, I change according to the match-up, but that's another matter.)

I agree with you about your last quote. Match up do matter. But I feel in most match up/team comps. The coin is always going to be better.
And as a silver player, that's switched into the ADC role. I've never had a support ping what minion they are going to try and last hit for a coin proc.
Most never change there starting items, or build paths. If they do change there build path its AD Maokai
DeathBurst1 votesNo, I wouldn't say Coin is better in "most" match-ups. In lane, it depends if you want to engage against a poke champ (sona/nami) or if you want to defend against an hard-engage champ (Taric/Leo). I'd say coin is better against poke, shield better against hard-engage.
But all that wasn't really the topic of the thread, initially ;)

They just changed that over to the life steal now. I don't think they put it in patch notes.
