tower and inhibitor assists

there have been many instances where me and a teammate or me and minions run down a tower and we end up destroying it but i dont get the last hit and my assistance in bringing it down is never shown , why is that?? how does the system choose if i get that assist or not??its a shame that i help on it and i dont get rewarded for it!!!
