Some of my thoughts about League of Legends after more than 6 years of playing.

Hello everyone,

Today I'm gonna be open and discuss about the game in many different aspects from my perspective. I have been playing this game for 6 hand a half years since October 2012. My peak rank was Plat in season 4 and 5. Before that, I played DotA 1 from 2010 to 2012. The reason why I decided to move to League is because League, and my opinion, feels much better than DotA in many ways:

First, when you die in League, you don't lose your gold. This encourage you to make more risky plays, and reduce the effect of snowball from your opponent.
Second, you can back home at anytime you want. This requires you to make more precise calculation before you can back home and buy items.
Third, there's no way to directly deny minions. You focus on other creative ways to control your minion waves.

These are the main reasons why I moved to League. There are a few more reasons, such as in the competitive scene, I think, Riot games was doing better at around 2013.

To me, season 4 and 5 were the best seasons of League, not because old things feel better, but because they were genuinely better. There are many different team composition that you could build to win the game, and those team-comps require different strategies to be operated. For instance, if you don't want to pick a 5v5 team comp because the other team has better adc player that love hard carrying his teammates, then you could pick a spilt-pushing top laner like Shen, and smartly play the map. Or you can have a strong assassin like Zed and counter that strategy by picking the adc and win the 3vs5 combat. And many other different teamcomps: -Poking -Strong teamfight: -strong early teamfight -strong late-game teamfight around adc. -2 adc. -4 tanks -Strong engaging and/or disengaging. -Strong sustainability. etc...

Each player can chose his or her favourist way to win the game. Some love picking early champ and stomp the enemy early, some love play it slow and safe and win by map-controlling.

But all of a sudden, season 6 happened. New mastery was introduced. There's no way you can have a 0-30-0 mastery anymore. There were less creative ways to win the game at this point, it all came down to who could win the team fight, but at least there were still different teamfight-comp. And then Rift Herald was introduced, which was a bad idea: the game was sped up faster and faster. Mid season 7 was when the game became unfun to play. I remember during the tank meta, watching esport wasn't really fun, because I could tell who was gonna win by counting the tankers, whichever team had more tankers would win.

And season 8 was a true nightmare: Blue essence, Rune reforged, Conqueror, Akali reworks, AP botlaners meta, Kai'sa and Xayah 80% of the time, Scuttler changes, jungle exp nerfs, and vision gut.

Now here I am, in season 9. Champions are either broken or useless, because the only way to win the game is through teamfight. One mistake and it cost you the game. The game is now more about who will be punished for making mistakes than who will be rewarded for making a nice play. Game ended when you have not even enjoyed it.

I feel lonely. My friends quit ages ago. The game is no longer the game I used to love, it's become a skin selling machine. New Esport casters are less and less professional, going off the topic frequently. They even spoiled Captain Marvel on an LCK match. Riot worries more about gender neutrality then the game quality, more about prestige skins then fixing bugs. I feel disappointed and burnt out. I hope they will address the issues and fix it, but every patches released just took away my hope bit by bit. And to be honest it's not that hard to fix the game, following these steps:

  1. Wait until preseason so the changes won't affect pro play too much. (Which Riot just missed this window 4 months ago).
  2. Revert to old runes. Revert Mastery to season 5. Adjust champs base stats with the revert.
  3. Ungut vision.
  4. Remove Redemption.
  5. Remove Stopwatch. Only Zhonya should have this privilege.
  6. Remove or adjust Attack damage-Defense items (jugganaugt items). item 3742 item 3026 item 3748 item 3053
  7. Revert Scuttler. Buff jungle exp.
  8. Revert shutdown bounty.
  9. Remove first turret bounty.
  10. Revert AP items changes to before 8.4.

That's what came to my mind at the moment. I think all other things are fine, or at least will be much easier to balance after those things I mentioned has been done. Turret plates are fine.

In conclusion, changing for the sake of change is not a good idea. Riot has made unnecessary changes for the past 3 years, which made them game less strategy-depth, and less fun to play. Riot should think about the bigger picture: if people love playing the game, they won't mind buying the skins, no matter how much it is. If people hate the game, they won't buy a single skin, no matter what. And remember, the playerbase can only grow to a certain size, so instead of trying to attract more players, Riot should try to keep the old ones.

So, revert League of Legends? I can get behind that. Can we also revert the champion releases since season 5 too?

Kaisha3/30/2019, 2:48:35 PM9 votes

The writing's on the wall. It won't be fixed, they couldn't fix it even if they wanted to. Players are leaving en-mass. Just find another game...

Game is lost, gone. What left are esports and chinese market. They both prefer fast paced game, esport for good show, chinese people because of time constraints. Chinese will keep buying skins because weird social pressures and face culture. Esport will somehow bring a lot of money too. Riot can completely ignore west without losing a lot of money, you are not a target audience for this game. Thats why nothing will change. Abandon the ship while you still can. This game is not for you anymore.

Funny thing is pretty much everyone will cite end of season5 start of 6 as when the decline started.

Know what happened then? Tencent bought out Riot.

Go figure right?

Can we talk about the fucking RNG jungle? Plants, drake, crab. The real shit started after assassins rework with lethality. I miss old times when Zed used to build statikk, hydra, Botrk...Not only Zed every assassin had unique builds, not this bullshit duskblade everygame. Then the r%%%%%ed tank meta came with bullshit inmortal tanks, tons of CC, look at sejuani, maokai, chogath. They overloaded tanks with CC on every abiliry. Nowdays Riot overload every new champion and reworks with mobility,cc, AoE and % damage. I dont know why they changed so much, maybe all old rioters left Riot? Dude i understand your game needs changes to keep it fresh but this is getting ridiculous.

Been here since season 1. Totally agree with you. I only keep playing because its the only game I play when I have time to play anything. I still have fun and do well but all my friends are gone and I just play for the satisfaction of my own performance and filling the roles noone wants to play so we can actually have a good match without a feeder leaver troll autofilled position

Skakdi Thok3/30/2019, 7:39:40 PM5 votes

the game was great till they start breaking the rules, starting with gnar ( a ranged champion that bully you early and won late as a tank) them GP came and coud poke you with barrels in the early game and 1 shot any squish later, them we got fiora that was overloaded back them and went tanky build and no one coud face her and final nail to the coffin for classic league of legends was the juggernaut update.

So for me the juggernaut era killed the classic league and after that started the faster game version we got nowadays

100% Agreed

I played S3+ and to me S4-5 was the best S9 is hands down the worst. Riot has not changed their Match Making even tho the game has changed almost 100%. Every game is a stomp one side or the other. I ether out class my enemy by leaps and bounds or they out class me.

There is 100% NO 50/50 games and it makes you want to throw your machine.

I understand why there are more and more Cheaters and Trolls in the game. Because they are not having fun and want to get back at the game for feeling cheated.

Riot does not care at all about the game. They are ONLY focusing on the Asian markets and they play for a different reason (and for those that come to NA are a lot of the cheaters it seems. Could be a test environment for them)

I only play because Im crazy in thinking the game will return back to the S4-5 play style and I will have fun again. But it wont. Im going to hang up my mouse on this in the next 6 months if things dont change for the better.

The Warwick rework signaled the direction they were taking the game, and wow what a misread. Obviously most of them do not understand gamers. The best thing about LoL was it really did appeal to everyone, like sports games, and unlike the RTSs they came from. Then they decided that was bad, and have turned the only mainstream MOBA back into a niche game. I would have to blame human resources as much as the designers bc obviously they were looking for the wrong thing when hiring people. Certain people understand that your internet footprint and real due diligence gives way more evidence how you operate and think then grades or a resume. You take the safe brown-nosing, honor student and I will take the philosopher well versed in the concerning issues and/or industries. Doing is a lot easier than deciding. But good deciders are also threatening to the status quo (if it's wrong).

I find the reasons you prefer league over Dota questionable and mostly opinionated. Not saying that one is better over the other. Its just that the reasons you give feel pretty opinionated. For example I don't see what you mean by creative ways to control minion waves. You either hit them, don't hit them, or leave the lane based on if your wave is pushing or not. I personally feel weird seeing your 3rd opinion because it also serves additional benefits and depth. It teaches supports how to last hit, allow for last hitting mind games for both sides, and additional benefits while maintaining wave control.

Also going back anytime you want you can do this in Dota its called a Tp scroll, you can do much more with it besides that as it acts like summoner 12, you can't tp back to base anytime you want though because it has a cooldown per use but going back in such a short amount of time isn't ideal in either game.

First reason is also somewhat bias as a lot of the changes in Lol have been to make the game less passive. Lol feels that way because it doesn't really do anything to show that your opponent got a gold from a kill so that feeling isn't as noticeable. Also competitive Lol from what I watch is very passive as the capability of outplaying is impossible unless the enemy outright screws up.

I am just pointing these out as your thoughts seems pretty opinionated in general and you should consider why certain changes were made as you listed quite a bit of stuff you want out without giving much reason to them individually.

Personally I have zero issue with faster games. I'm NA and no I don't work for Rito...

I find that longer games happen naturally from two equal teams fighting to the bitter end to win. I'm proud even if I lose those 40 minute, neck and neck, style games because they are always fun, always full of good sportsmanship, and they feel great.

The reason i don't hate faster games is because most games really do go on longer than they need to. People not knowing how to end is infinitely more annoying than anything else. I can handle feeders, i can handle toxic language, what i cannot handle is my team refusing to just end the game and instead leaving to go farm their 4th item when there's an open Nexus...

There are no enough curse words in English which can describe what I think about Rito devs. Maybe there is a hope Chinese goverment would pass that "social /educational law for youth and ban all western games so Rito lost their biggest income and goes back to western market.

I’ve played this game a long time as well (since open beta). There has always been a broken FOTM build/team composition and champions. What’s changed is better exposure through esports and streams. Back in seasons 1-3 you had to really dig and look for them and even then there was no practice tool you had to spend time to learn and get good but by then it could be hotfix or patched. By the time what people think of the golden age 4,5 sort of 6 and things start ramping up the player base was still exploading so it had lots of new and inexperienced players. This meant poor execution so FOTM builds still felt more rare 1/3 games or so. Now though everyone is experienced there is high exposure and anyone can spend an hour in the practice tool to get good at combos and strategy. So everyone can capitalize on mistakes and snowball better. What we are seeing is what games felt like in Diamond back in season 4 ( my max rank at the time). Fast games, tons of damage and snowballing. Only occasionally going to 40 minutes. Honestly I think riots doing fine. And I’ve played all current broken champs and builds and they aren’t half as bad as beta and season 1 broken champs and builds. Like Jax now is actually just a weaker preseason 1 Jax with permanent dodge.

Frog goes moo3/30/2019, 5:42:20 PM3 votes

remove stopwatch? What would be the counterplay to zed ultimate at early levels? Seeker's armguard by itself doesn't save you from his 100-0 combo.

Raiyza3/31/2019, 5:17:25 AM3 votes

I just want matchmaking improved....

Even with all he damage in the game, if you actually know what the fuck you're doing, you can work around it. I just wish I would get teammates that know how to do so.....

I think that's what kills the game the most. It's players that just don't play properly.

  1. If you mean no midseason patch, yes. If you mean no meaningful changes at all midseason, no.
  2. Yes, yes and yes.
  3. Please yes
  4. Don't really feel a need to remove this except on ARAM
  5. Yes
  6. Dead mans no, GA yes, Titanic maybe, Sterak's maybe
  7. PLEASE YES - this is probably the most urgent change needed to be made
  8. Yes
  9. Yes, or reduce it - plates + first turret give such a big lead.
  10. Idk because I don't often play mages but I think mage itemization just needs a little more diversity besides Mana item (usually Ludens) - Rabadon - Void - Zhonyas. Maybe buff rod of ages?

I feel lonely. My friends quit ages ago.

Every veteran of any game knows this feel, but this especially hurts in league because it is encouraged to play with premades because of the braindead community and advantages.

New Esport casters are less and less professional, going off the topic frequently.

They have to because for the majority of the game literally nothing happens. Everyone are passively farming.

They even spoiled Captain Marvel on an LCK match.

Nothing of value was lost

I totally agree. I would love to play those old versions.

I don't have the time currently to discuss the rest of your points, but the biggest one in particular that I want to single out: why remove Redemption? item 3107

Just curious, not saying anything is wrong or right.

I respect your thoughts. Thanks!

I am also former DotA (1) player (dota 2 since beta, and DotA before that) and switched to league cause of..? I don't know! Just wanted to try something new. I still like DotA and sometimes having a game or two (for new heroe release I am always in to explore it), but currently I am more of a league guy.

I won't say dota is more punishing (death gold etc..) at least now. Modern dota is terribly imbalance and having even ten deaths in a row and buy back winning single teamfight could easily win a late game + don't forget dota is farming simulator: farming is truly macro knowledge in dota and gives more than CS/gold (with stacking and minion pulling it's actually lane pressure and CS deny).

Anyway! Death is not (and I believe never-ever was) as punishing as in League. Dying here even once could be real lane ender (especially when no TP/up) and cause no buy backs + map is small and game is faster + modern league is more teamwork and less carry oriented + lol champion & dota heroe scaling differences: those lost seconds loose herald/drake/objectives and put you and your team far back than in dota (+ turret plating + 1st turret bonus..)

Modern league is more like WIN/LOOSE! One in ten games I am having successful comeback. This is due to more static META. Some like it, some hate it. Personally this is why I switched to league and still playing it. Strict macro makes game more easy to learn and yet hard to master.

I don't know about runes. Personally I like recent rune changes, maybe cause I understand how and when to use each. Combined runes/masteries make more sense to me, maybe easier to understand and much more fun to use. But I think they should NERF some runes (especially Conqueror).

I won't say league sucks or they should revert everything back to season 5. No! (though farm bounties suck!)

The only thing I would like to have more are imbalance champions (like Sylas). No I am not kidding! Imagine every league champion would be OP and counters each other so only those with better skill win a game (something like dota, but in league speed). Cause todays league heavily relies on teamwork (I would call this: they went more for pro and forget about casual), but having teamwork with people I don't know + some even don't talk english + sooo many toxic/troll/unskilled players (toxicity is on pair with dota)... aaah... it hurts!

That's the only thing I would like to have in league, but I know this will never happen and I am not sad.

By the way... I remember season 5, but my perspective was worse than yours. I remember that terrible client/game crushes, awful bugs, disconnects/AFK every game, 700+ ping spikes, worst designed champs (which are being reworked one by one nowadays). Modern league has higher standards than before: engine, visuals, champions. Todays league is better than ever. Maybe for older players this game is not interesting anymore cause years back everything was new and more challenging... hmm! I think so, though Riot is not perfect either and like any big company it focuses money (esports...) and less about casual gameplay.

Overall league is a very good game! Riot made it's own League of Legends universe and culture around it. The same dota has no soul, thus feeling boring and dead. So most importantly LoL is constantly evolving and feels more alive than any other game right now.
