The only time i see Vel'Koz is as a support. But he is probably one of my favorite midlaners behind Kayle. Am I terrible for picking him mid? With a slow and knock-up and pretty good base damage and mana costs, he is a lot of fun to play.

Of course he's viable mid, he's a cousin of Xerath. Good damage, good waveclear and poke. He's immobile, though, and is countered hard by mobile assassins which currently rule mid lane.
Once you hit 6 though, your opponent better be real scared. Vel'koz annihilates anyone at level 6 with his full combo.
He carries a lot harder from the mid role. He also has great roam potential from that position. I main him, so if support is taken I go mid.

Only if you are very aware of your own opponent's CC to lock you down, or know how to ward your surroundings due to your immobility, then sure, Vel is fun at mid.
Vel is godly once post 6 and can really catch other off guard. I play him very safely, mostly under tower because of his great poke and lack of escape, but once I land my knock up its all ogre for them xD.
