oh dear my poor galio will no longer be great...

so before i get started i would like to state that as galio being one of my top 3 played characters (most nearly my only 3 played characters) I would like to say that I was actually pretty good top and mid lane being galio with the exception of fighting a supurior ranged champion.

before the update (whenever that was, havent played in a bit) I actually liked galio the way he was before all of this rework and redesign ever took place. I'd use his Q to massively or decently damage my opponents, W for retreating, E for chasing or assisting my allies in the chase, and my most favorite Q for team fights which i would always try to hold 3-5 champions at a time in a team fight.

now his new abilities (IMO) are lacking in the power and strength that he used to have... his new appearance is just so not right and Idek if you changed his lore yet, but he is supposed to be a guardian, who also knew or at least had some lore connected with kayle (which is why I like and chose him). his new Q is just lacking in the raw power and effect it used to have. what? Eye blasting concussion bombs weren't good enough for you? not modern enough to satisfy your needs? well, it WAS a great starting ability, but now his damage per Q is much lower than what it use to be. (ever one shot half or 3/4 of someone's health? i have)

his W is really just his old ultimate nerfed down to be another form of taunt. i suppose thats useful but really his old W was pretty nifty in most situations i have experienced.

Ok so ive got to admit that his new E isnt that bad. its a good CC ability and arguably id probably want that instead of his old E but on the other hand his old CC was great for chasing down champions or dealing that last bit of damage to kill off that last bit of Hp and i think it had a bit more range IIRC.

finally his new R... although its not too bad, it doesnt seem to ME like it has the potential like it used to have, (but i guess thats just my opinion though) although it does give more of a support role or even a charge role if your behind and catching up while your team pushes. before the update his ult for me was the best team fight ability when done right, starting off a team fight by positioning yourself in a better-suited location, or even just picking off people trying to run. his new ultimate IMO just doesn't serve as much self-purpose for aggressive top and mid laning and solo 1v1 lanes, but instead relying on another champion to actually be in the right position or risking losing a champion just so they can get galio to use his ult is a bit lackluster for what i had in mind for his ULT...

I don't know about the rest of you galio people who played him before the update, but im not entirely liking his new look or abilities too much. just buffing his old self would've been sufficient

He feels great to me, but I'm a dirty tank player.

I guess the problem is just that his new playstyle is radically different, the two almost feel like different champions with a couple of shared gimmicks.

New Galio seems really cool to me. This might not be his meta yet, but I think the design is good, and as long as his numbers aren't nerfed into oblivion, he may become the new standard to which other new tanks (and reworks of existing tanks) are compared to.

idk, to me the old galio i just felt like such a beast. not too much tank, but not too little health and great dps for anyone thats a non tank. burst down enemies, trap everyone in the ult than finish them off with your team or your ranged attacks. im just gonna miss his old abilities really

The new Galio is really, really strong. I'm surprised by what you are saying. How did you build old Galio and how have you tried building new? The new Q is easier to land the old 1 so I suppose it has to have less damage. I've built Galio with item 3151 item 3025 and whatever tank items and easily done the most damage, which is a lot on a champ with such utility. Sion can do that too but Sion is easier to outplay. I can see Galio becoming pick or ban in pro games because of his ult. They keep nerfing Shen just because of his ult in pro play.

They gave him meaningful gameplay. No offense to you, even if you are a Galio main, but he was regarded as one of the joke champions (Urgot, Galio, Aatrox, Taric, Poppy) and needed a change. There was a reason for this, he was pretty bad.

Before, he was just clunky. The eye beam itself was slow and just pretty clunky, the wind felt clunky and took a while to fully finish, the bulwark was just a boring spell. Simply a shield that healed him a bit and made him tankier. Didn't even give fancy visuals. His ult was really his only redeeming quality because it was extremely deadly. But, trad off, it was really hard to land. You basically needed flash or maybe a righteous glory through an E. His kit took no thought. There was no complexity to it and overall, it wasn't useful. His passive too was really boring. Just flat stats. Encouraged you to build MR for a bit of extra damage. Made you only want to pick him into AP comps.

New Galio is just so much more complex and fun. His gameplay did a complete 180. He gained a bit of tank busting capability with his percent damage, made the skillshot unique and turned it partially into a zoning ability. Gave it synergy with Rylai's. His W is a weaker ult now, yes, but it allows him to heavily impact team fights without blowing a massive cooldown, partially a trade off for the situational nature of his ult now. AOE taunt with damage reduction. Option of instacasting the taunt for a reduced effect, good for breaking channels and such. His E I think is one of the most incredible parts of his kit now. One it just adds more CC to him, so he's a better tank. Two, it gave him pretty good mobility that works for the most part. Three, it gave him great synergy with CotC to make him even tankier. His passive changed to make up for some damage lost since in lane and any solo fight, he can't simply ult. The damage on it is pretty good and helps trade evenly in your minion line as well as clearing their minions while simultaneously beating on the laner with an E>W>Q>Passive. He's also not terribly gated by mana since he can actually CS now reliably without spells.

I understand that as a main, reworks seem shitty if the champion doesn't have the same feel. And some champions, like Darius or Xerath, never changed much in terms of gameplay when reworked. Others, like Sion and Galio, were disfunctional in the niche and role they were designed for, so they needed to change their core. Galio was some mess between a tank and a bruiser mage. He was encouraged to build tanky to get damage and to survive as he rushed into fights, but also encouraged to build damage due to his great aoe damage and healing. He was melee, like a tank, but his spells involved range mostly with high damage. His mana drained quickly so you couldn't really go damage unless you build mana, which often involved foregoing the tank so you get melted. He was just a confused champion in a modern time that he did not belong in. He was released way before mobility spiked hard in the game, and mobility was his ultimate counter since day 1. Now, no longer.
