How many games can you lose before getting demoted at Gold 5 with 0LP?

Hey there. Title says it all. Details - New to this tier and I'm not sure if I should continue on due to not knowing how many games I can lose before getting demoted since I do want to stay within Gold Tier. Thanks so much for your answers!

From the Riot FAQ: "After being promoted into a new division or tier, you’ll gain the effects of a demotion ‘shield,’ which prevents you from dropping. This is to keep you from winning a series, losing a few games and then immediately dropping back to where you were. The shield lasts for 3 games after advancing a division, and 10 games after advancing a tier."

So hypothetically if you just got promoted you can win/lose ten games and not be demoted unless you lose the 11th at 0 or Less LP.

It depends on your MMR. If you start to notice that you're playing with people in Silver 3-5, you're probably close to getting demoted.

once your in gold your in man but I think it takes 10 losses to get demoted back to silver.

It's mmr based, so if you got to gold 5 winning 90% of your games like a god and actually had a plat mmr, you could probably lose like 30 games in a row without being demoted. On the other hand if you've being constantly ending up at gold v 0 LP, winning a game occasionally and then losing a few and have like silver 4 mmr, then even 1 or 2 more losses at gold 5 0 LP could be enough to tip you to demotion.

I feel like demotion from gold 5 0 LP assuming you start with around gold 5 mmr would probably be around a dozen losses in a row, but thats just a rough estimate, and besides one can't know their mmr for certain. If you're seeing low silvers in your games, then I'd be worried though.

I just played a game against gold 1 (previously plat) , 3, and 4 players. I find that unfair considering my team consisted of Low gold tier (5 and 4) and one silver thresh. Is there something wrong with my the MMR?

The two teams will on average be approximately the same mmr, so occasionally relatively low rank players will actually be the aforementioned gods how have mmrs well beyond their rank, and that's why they're in the same game. Duos occasionally also throw a wrench into the mix. It is very unlikely that your mmr is specifically somehow broken, or that matchmaking on the whole isn't working as intended.

Still, if both teams start looking mid-low silver on average (excluding yourself), then it's probably fair to be worried. One off games here and there with some weird rank mismatches can be attributed to a variety of things, including how mmr and rank don't always match for people (so getting matched with someone a lower rank than you could mean that your mmr is low, but it could also mean that their mmr is high, hence you gotta look at the big picture and ideally over multiple games).

Agh. That sucks so much. But, thank you for the information.

At a quick glance at your op.gg, you have an over 50% winrate overall, and op.gg's estimate for your mmr is aorund gold 4.

Op.GG and similar third party website estimates are not necessarily accurate, but the >50% part does lend credence to you probably being safe from demotion without a whole lot more losses. If you legitimately earned gold, it is extremely unlikely to be demoted though. You in principle should be able to have at least a 50% win rate at gold 5 mmr, and hence an even higher one at lower mmrs, so even unlucky streaks will just bring you down to an mmr where you can reliably stomp and bounce back.

Thank you! One more thing. I'm assuming that if I had a higher MMR , am I able to skip division as well? Say I had an approximate MMR of a Gold 3 person. Am I able to skip gold 4?

Mysticman891 votes

If your MMR is sufficiently higher than your current division, it is sometimes possible to skip divisions, although I think you need to be way ahead of the curve for division skipping.

So I doubt gold 3 mmr would let you skip from gold 5 to gold 3 (as that could just be a lucky streak), but a plat 5 mmr would probably let you skip from gold 5 to gold 3, and if you keep up your winrate you might then go on to skip from gold 3 to gold 1 (presumably with a mid plat ish mmr).

Actually you'll get demotion warnings. First one is yellow, which means you're nearing demotion if you don't win some games. If you keep losing more than winning, it turns red and you are "critically close" to being demoted. Just watch for the demotion warning over your rank on your profile.

I speak from experience. I gained 14 or so lp and lost 22 from wins and losses, respectively. That was a few losses after getting the red demotion warning. So just watch your lp gains. If you're gaining st least 17 you should be find. And I did climb back up to Gold 4 in case anyone wonders. So yeah, just watch your lp gain to tell how close you are.
