New Shen and my tweaks moving foward
I have yet to play the new Shen in PBE but i have watched and analyzed a couple games and read many opinions. And I'd say the champion update was done fairly well. He didn't need an update over some other champions but he definitely could have used one as the current live Shen was for some understandably boring to play as and in some cases to play against. But generally aged ok thanks to his kit and balance. As my main, Shen wasn't boring to me as he fit my play-style very well and i feel the update still kept most of it intact.
Each Ability is a separate potential tweak to make up for his more obvious cons in his new kit and not to be taken all together. only Alternate Q and W are thought to work in conjunction if they were chosen.
Passive Ki Barrier: There's not much to say here its a pretty good passive and i think most people don't have a problem with it but if there was something to tweak i guess I'd just have it last a 1s longer to help make it feel more dependable.
Q Twilight Assault: The problem with Twilight Assault is it doesn't provide poke or sustain which were big factors in what allowed Shen to be a pretty reliable top. Twilight Assault does help his dueling capability but not by much if at all unless you land your taunt. Which brings another problem being that Shadow Dash is also your means of escape if things don't go well. That isn't too much different than before but at least then you still could poke and heal with Vorpal Blade. I think if the reward was a bit more substantial other than Dmg like movement speed bonus upon landing the 3 consecutive Dmg bonuses on an enemy champion allowing you to get away would mitigate counters attacks or some sort of heal to help keep you in lane but still requiring you to engage and not just giving you what you want without the risk in doing so. I'm not sure if Twilight Assault procs Ki Barriers' cool-down reduction per Atk on enemy champion but if it doesn't that might be another good idea.
Personally I think Twilight is pretty good as is because its ok if you cant always get the pass through benefits the cooldown is low enough to where you can constantly change its position and the energy is a net increase.
Alternate Q: So from my understanding, the people who don't like the new Q or parts of it is that you cant really place it behind your opponent without being out of position. Again forcing you to Shadow Dash in to receive benefits. So I thought what if Twilight Assault now Orbits around Shen at a range of 5,000 completing 1 cycle per minute at levels 1-5, 30sec at 6-10, 15sec at 11 -15 and 7.5sec at lvl 16-18 this allows Shen an alternate potential engage when it orbits behind your opponent and still allows you to summon it to you when it's behind you or any other unfavorable position around you. And your opponent will still know it's relative position from you. This changes how you would play and yet still keep the Twilight Assault what it is. Might have to add some new particles like Shen clones or Kinkou letters or something granting you the Q instead of the blade just zoning in and out of your screen just to orbit around you. Really opens up more opportunities for all ins every once in awhile when you like the positioning of the blade. And still allows the opponent to out play you.
W Spirits Refuge: Not much to change here assuming you don't go with the alternate Q idea which I'll get into next. I would like if W interacted with Shen outside of his spirit zone granting the dodge without having to be in it since i feel in many cases you wont get to see the impact in a team fight. 1.75sec is like one auto attack maybe 2 for each member in it. Or at least Shen blocks the next auto attack so players can link it with the W which would extent his dodge potential. But that does seem to be throwing it back to what the W just came from. I could be wrong but doesn't seem all that great the way it is now, then again its only 40 energy. Or perhaps a spell shield for Shen only, to give an impression he can dodge anything that particular instant.
Alternate W: If Q now orbits Shen then the placements and time-frame for Spirits Refuge now become broken before it goes back to orbiting Shen. It should look more like the power is being given to Shen rather than being called upon. If this is the case then the blade doesn't need to be placed anymore perhaps when Shen uses Twilight Assault Allies the Spirit Blade passes through get a buff for the next 5 seconds, Shen can then press W and a Spirits Refuge will activate in an area around them providing the affect for 1.75 sec
E Shadow Dash: There are no changes needed here but again if there was something here that could change how you feel about how the Champion Update seems I would say have its passive have additive procs: 1 target: refund energy, 2 targets: gain an additional(tauntless Damageless) dash, 3 targets: more energy, 4 targets: another purely movement dash and 5 targets: more energy. A potential of 3 dashes and 3 energy refunds. If this was the only change this wouldn't affect your lane phase much outside of ganks but allows Shen to be nimble and stick to the enemy carries without outright giving you more dmg. and more than likely you only taunt once in a team fight. Hitting more than 2 enemies with taunts is uncommon. Hitting 4 and 5 is rare like maybe once a game if you're lucky. and again they don't deal damage or taunt. Otherwise being Kited is much more likely now than it already was then.
R Stand United: Its fine as is but I'd like a free energy refill upon cast.
Just for fun it would be cool if we could double cast the next ability.
I tried to keep my ideas reasonable as i know people can get into it and not realize how ridiculous some things sound. I'd imagine the weaknesses behind the decisions made in his new kit were intentional being even weaker to poke champs and heavy sustain. I tried to make it so as one ability itself could or would make up for a major weakness if used well enough. Either way they're still tweaking him so I'm sure the devs will be looking at him for balance often. But to me he's looking pretty good.
Thanks for reading!
Edit: I just want to make sure that I don't exactly think these tweaks need to happen as it might come off like that but just a way for me to express how i would like to see them tweaked if he did need them. I tried leaving the kit as is for the most part and tried to cover how i think people who preferred the old Shen would like to play.
