Garen needs serious buffs right now

No I'm not actually 12. Hey. I've played this game since season 3, and I've been an avid Garen main for a majority of my time playing. I'm obviously not the best player or anything like that, but I'd like to think I'm better than the average player. Season 4 I ended at gold 1 with mid plat mmr only because I took a big break and didn't play enough more in time to hit it before the season ended. Last season I managed to get into plat 3 with diamond 5 mmr. But here's the thing, I managed to climb and pull myself up that far with Garen mainly. Yeah, I'm sort of a one trick pony with him, which is why I said I'm only slightly better than the average player. I would usually end games with him with something like an 18/5/8 score and I had an almost 70% win ratio with him spanning over more than 200 games with him. I was also once ranked as the 300th best Garen in the world on lolskill, so I think I have some room to talk about Garen. Right now I'm gold 1, and I haven't been able to go anywhere. My score is usually negative, somewhere around 4/5/3 each game, and I have a 47% win ratio, and I'm not even playing him that differently than I did before. My glory streak with Garen ended promptly with the Juggernaut patch. Yeah you know the one that gave Darius a heal, and Mordekaiser some neat stuff, and Garen a reworked kit. I'm gonna now explain why he is now strictly worse than he was before, and why he is unplayable at the moment. I'm REALLY hoping Riot notices this and gives him some much needed help. Anyways, let's start with his passive. There's nothing there that actually went bad with that patch so I'm not complaining about that. His Q, oh God his Q. I don't remember the exact stats after the rework, but the ones on it now are worse in every category. His old Q gave a silence ranging from 1.5 seconds to 2.5 seconds, a burst of movement speed that scaled in speed and time, and it removed slows. I don't think they messed with the damage much if at all so that aspect is still fine. His Q now just sucks. Riot took off some movement speed and duration AND silence duration ON TOP OFF HIS BASE MOVESPEED NERF. Before the juggernaut update, Garen was already having some difficulties with getting kited, but he was balanced because it took someone somewhat decent to kite him. If he landed on top of you as a ranged carry before, you kinda deserved it. That was what type of champ he was. Now, it is near impossible to chase any ranged champ that has any kind of escape or mobility or cc just because of all the "small" number nerfs to him combined. Now onto his W. His W before the update gave him a 30% damage reduction for 2/3/4/5/6 second duration. That hasn't changed, but Riot did lower the cooldown on it, which was nice, but the damage they did to it is horrendous. The old W gave a 30% tenacity active when his W was active, and that really helped his kiting problem, but kept him just balanced enough to not be broken with it. The new W doesn't have that. At all, and that contributes to his current awfulness in a big way. When in combination with his Q and movespeed nerfs, he is so easily kiteable that I can't land on a ranged target that at all anymore. I used to have some diversity in his build path for boots, but now I HAVE to have mercury treads if I don't want to be stunlocked for an oblivion. The other change Riot made to it was its passive, which used to give an additional 20% bonus armor and magic resistance, but now gives 0.25 armor and magic resistance per minion/champ killed, stacking up to 30. This makes Garen squishier unless he's building pure damage, which he should never be doing anyways. Overall, this particular change isn't HUGE, but it does make him easier to kill. I used to have 200 armor with just a randuin's omen and ninja tabi, now I can't even get 180 from that. His E, probably his most notorious move, spin to win, was actually not hurt as bad. In fact, it was buffed mid to later game with its number of strikes and damage. Riot gave it less strikes and damage from levels 1-3, which were crucial for his laning phase. Garen vs. Riven was an even matchup before the update if the Riven player knew what they were doing, but now Garen just straight up loses the matchup. The same can be said vs. Renekton, Shyvana, and most other close matchups Garen had. His laning phase until 7 is worse in every way. I won't say much about his R because it wasn't harmed in any way, but the "Villain" passive on it is not necessary, and it could honestly be removed or just changed in a way that doesn't make it honestly somewhat broken like it is now. His stereotyped playstyle before was "win lane lose game, the champ", but now he's just "lose everything why did you even pick him, the champ". This steryotype derived from the playerbase thinking that you were only supposed to build full tank on Garen when he offered no utility other than a silence, but his base damages were decent, which is why he was considered strong in the laning phase. This mentality and buildstyle had most people that played Garen fall off hard later game when he had nothing but bulk. Riot listened to this mentality and based the changes to his damage and mobility around that. But I'm here to tell you that that mentality was wrong, and he actually could've been a threat later game if built the way that I did. Rather than build him full tank, I built him like more of a high DPS bruiser with damage items. I've had many games with him that allowed me to build an infinity edge and ghostblade when it gave critical chance on it, and NOT fall off late game because my W active and passive still made me bulky enough to get to the enemy back line, which I could do before the numerous Q and W nerfs, and assassinate the enemy squishies and just barely escape or die like a man in the middle of the enemy team. That was where the fun in playing him for me came from. Building damage on him before was what got me my 70% win ratio and I think 5 KDA, and made me enjoy playing the game. All that joy is lost for me now, when I lose lane to everything that isn't Nasus, which is now more of an even matchup for Garen when it should be a stomp. Riot's mentality when updating him was "He needs more damage and less mobility to balance it out" when he was already balanced before. He did damage if you built at least a little on him. Somebody at Riot please listen to me. Garen was what made me login to play this game, and was what made me win game and enjoy playing them. He wasn't broken, but he wasn't that weak either. Taking away his mobility and ability to stick to people in order for a tradeoff for a bit more damage was not needed and makes him unplayable right now. And taking his early E damage away just practically gives his laning phase away until he hits level 7, if it isn't completely lost by then. I'm asking for more of a return to the older Garen, where his ability to do well was THERE, and the intelligence and player skill of the enemy team and the player was what kept him down, and not just an easy ranged champion pick or even a lot of melee picks now. I've kind of lost the will to play this game anymore, and I've been playing this game for 3 and a half years now, and it's not because I'm feeling burnt out, but because my favorite champion is honestly trash right now. I know you historically haven't given much attention or care for Garen, but I'm asking you to look at him right now, and just do something, anything to get him out of where he is now. Thanks for reading and please consider giving him some attention.

totally fine, maybe a rework.

He just needs another rework if riot decides they want him to be viable for competitive play. There's no way to buff his current kit to be viable without him becoming broken for lower leagues, because of how hard he snowballs, and it's worse for him than it is for Darius, because of the huge movement speed buff on his Q.

wrong.

his winrate is below 50% at all levels of play and was 52% at plat and above while 53% to 54% at bronze/silver before it dropped with the mage rework.

the idea that garen cant be buffed without being broken in lower divisions is a myth. it used to be like that years ago, but it hasnt been like that anymore for a long time now.

As long as the silence doesn't get buffed you are absolutely right. If they extend that though there would be too many people he could run to ground with them having very little in the way of counter besides "oh crap it's garen, RUN!"

Garen is a champion for people new to the game so they dont have much to worry about. I enjoyed playing him when i started lol but by now i cant even take this champ serious anymore. He´s easy to play so it should be easy to play against him
