Trolls & Leavers: A Solution

Greetings. I have been playing since 2009 and never commented on the Forum or made a splash in any way. But the 'sleepers' ususally awake just when things are about to get impossible for the Hero. I am awake and I am speaking up now because change does not happen while one sleeps.

We've all had them on our teams, trolls are are rude, inconsiderate and lack basic common sense. You have players who make the same mistakes in game such as face checking bushes when enemy teams are missing, jungling the majority of the game while a team fight is taking place, chasing enemies into their towers or into obvious ganks and engaging enemies when they are considerably outnumbered. This would be understandable.... if they were Level 10! But they are level 30 and experienced. What's worse is that they do not listen to anyone when you ask them to be careful or stick with the team, instead you are met with profanity and threats to either Leave or Feed.

Riot is doing what little they can but it seems to be leaving only a dent. I believe it is time to truly give the player a good arsenal to deal with trolls. One of the biggest problems is being trapped in a game with them because you are afraid to be reported or flagged as a Leaver. The trolls have the power because he does not care for his fate while those he trolls does. Time to tip the scales Riot.

Below are some ideas that may help aleviate the problem:

  1. One of which is making the surrender vote in TT a majority vote of 2 for 3 instead of all 3, as this mode is where most trolls reside and a mode Riot ignores as if it's their bastard child. It is frustrating when you have no chance of winning thanks to a troll and said troll locks you in the game due to the 3 for 3 surrender rule out of sheer spite. This is a major problem in TT.

1b) On the topic of TT, the time to surrender should be 10 mins instead of 15. Most trolls start to troll from Champ Select and will make it clear when the game starts they have no intention of playing for the ultimate goal of fun or winning. You have no idea how annoying it is to spend 20+ minutes of your life (as aformentioned they do not surrender) with people who do not value your time or effort. And if you should leave the match, you are of course flagged as a Leaver and get punished. The player feels trapped and will ultimately leave the game because of it. You may say, there are other modes to play but not everyone likes the time consuming, slow item pace, rigid role picking that is 5s or the unfulfilling, high stratergy, heavy team play and positioning that is Dominion. Threes is suppsoed to be a casual fast paced game but trolls ruin the experience. My suggestions will help tremendously in rectifying this problem.

  1. When a player is blocked the chance of encountering them on your team should be nullified. This means that they should not be on your team in the future. If the current Block function does this at a lower chance, create a new button that does this at a 100% rate. A player does not block others on a whim, they block them for a reason. That decision should be honored by Riot.

  2. Leavers are a problem. My solution to this is a Second Choice Function. When a player (PING for this example) decides to join a queue a window will appear that will ask them to select a champ they will most likely play (Teemo for this example) and the masteries, summoner spells of their choice, and it closes with Thank You. Now, let's say a game is in progress and a Teemo player has left the game, PING is still in the queue... at this time PING has the choice to join the game in progress that has a Teemo that left and pick up where that player left off. It is a great idea that may need some tuning but Riot has the resources to execute.

  3. A final solution to the troll issue is as simple as a Shame Tag. When a player is condemned by the Tribunal for whatever reason, a Tag Appears on their Summoner page, on thier Summoner Name and Loading Screen Image indicating they are known for trolling. This will let players know that this person is to be avoided due to their behavioral history. Players who are Shame Tagged get a reduction in IP and EXP along with the regular restrictions.

Other possible restrictions may include the restricting of certain game modes, the inability to use IP for purchaes and if the player continues to troll regardless, and there are enough of them, the Matchmaking System may then extricate them from the population and make it so that they can only queue with other trolls with the Shame Tag feature.

This feature alone will reform the wannabe, those who troll for the heck or fun of it, and will remove the true trolls from the population -- those who do it out of sheer malice. Riot has a policy of deleting threads that expose trolls and may see this idea as such. Their excuse is that you bring fame to the individual but this system is different. Shame Threads do not work because you are indeed bringing attention to the trolls, the downside is that there are no repercussions so they are in fact getting something positive out of it. Shame Tag is different, the player has the power to have the Tag or not, but for it to work in the slight chance the player trolls there must be some sort of repremand otherwise it will be a trophy for their success at ruining the game for others.

The fact remains, for this game and this community to rise there must be measures in place to effectively deal with those who prefer to misbehave. Afterall, Balance in all things. Irelia

Be well. {{summoner:2}}

Probably a nice approach, and I do like one, but others might have some flaw...

1 (Two-man surrender in a three-man team): I felt, like, why not? They could allow this like a three-man surrender in a four-man team. A one-man surrender in a two-man team would be too much though (unless there is a two-man game mode that lasts long enough).

1b (Shorter surrender time on TT): Sorry but I have no idea about that, because I don't play on TT...

2 (Block function): I know a way of doing this without a drawback. It's practically an auto-dodge without penalty or an error message.

"Block list" automatically replaces you with another queue-ing player if there is a player on the list as either an ally or an enemy. As you can block innocent players, the blocked players shouldn't be punished by this list, and blocking stronger/weaker players should never give you any advantage.

...but, if you block someone, most of the other players won't like to play with that one, so "only you are allowed to avoid getting trapped with that troll" may or may not be justified...

3 (Second Choice): Currently I'm sure leaver problem should be reduced, but I don't think "too much" like replacing one with another human player is very good... I suppose, leavers should be kept as a problem, at least more than so-called noobs are, so players won't harass those out of the team to get "compensation".

3 (Shame Tag): I don't think it would be too good. What would players do when someone in their solo-queue team had that tag? of course, without dodging or asking others to do so. But it might work as a prevention rather than a punishment.

Hi,

I'm a less experienced player as I only started playing 6 months ago. Sorry for this account, but I'm a EUW player.

I, too, never speak on the forum but I'm making an exception just to say this : I am your troll as much as you're mine.

Reading your description, let's be honnest, I thought I was fitting especially well. Yes I can feed hard when losing lane, yes I facecheck every brush I can, yes I get pulled like a mob and ganked. Does that make me a troll? I don't think so.

I'm currently in Silver II and it's obvious that I have still a lot to learn. All points from the above included. But that's a lack of skill, in no way is it done with the deliberate purpose of ruining other's people pleasure they could get playing that game.

But you, Sir, are the kind of teammate that can ruin my day. The kind that think themselves above the other and spend more time flaming others and calling them trolls then actually playing the game. I would just want to tell you something : if at your Elo you're matched with those so-called trolls, then you're no better than them. You can think they're stupid enough to make those mistake you mentionned, but truely it just means you're doing even worse than them or else you'd be rising above that plebe wouldn't you?

Now if Riot makes it easier for you to get rid of me, will they give me a way to get rid of you so I can enjoy playing with my fellow "trolls" and be happy at the end of a game, in victory and in defeat?

People will make mistakes, that is a given, but those who do not learn from them is the excess. It is okay if you make a mistake but to do it repeatidly and even when your team cautions you is troll behavior. Unfortunataley this is a team game and you need a team to win -- it doesn't matter how good you are, you alone cannot win a game against equally skilled people when one man on your team constantly makes mistakes and does not correct himself.

The ego is what is upsetting because you cannot talk to them or tell them anything, they feel they know the world of things yet fall for the same ganks time and again or engage a fed player when they know there is no shot at victory, citing "I NEVER LOSE" as their reason.

My post was also catered to TT especially because it is the mode I have time to play after work. It is also the mode that has the majority of trolls so if you have no experience with this mode on a daily basis then that makes your points almost invaild. When I enter a game I want to win, that is my goal and I would like others to respect that and put in as much effort as I do. The thing with the queue is that you cannot see who you're playing with, their past matches etc., nor can you escape a would be "unskilled player" in the process. The player should have more freedom in this regard and that is the point: to give the player the power instead of the trolls, leavers and the unskilled. My ideas would help tremendously.

"You can think they're stupid enough to make those mistake you mentionned, but truely it just means you're doing even worse than them or else you'd be rising above that plebe wouldn't you?"

As I mentioned 5s is a mode I play occasionally, and when I do there's often one or two unskilled players who make mistakes but the beauty in 5s is that it is the COMEBACK MODE, and it really doesn't matter who feeds so there is little problem there. 3s however, is a difference: the game is totally fast paced and because it is so "intimate" a slipup, especially done repeatidly, ensures your team loses. There is little comeback in this mode unless the enemy player either afks for a few minutes so you can recover or they get super cocky and engage badly. This, however, is rare. Sadly, this is where you see not only the egotistical unskileld player who knows everything but trolls who feed for ip and bots. Bots are something new and it makes things difficult and frustrating. What I would like is the ability to effectively escape trolls on this map by the simple ideas I listed in the OP; the one that would assist the most is the 2 for 3 surrender vote and the 10 min surrender time.

You may argue that I should just not play 3s but I have a craving for LOL every once in a while and I want to play a game that fits into my schedule. 3s does it for me and it's the mode I like.
