ok from what ive seen a lot of melee ad's have a good early game but not the greatest late game while a lot of ranged ad's have a pretty weak early and a strong late game. why is this?

You have it wrong then.
Melee adc's should be Yi, Trynd, Jax (mixed) and Fiora (and to some extent, Olaf) which they do have very good late game if fed, however unlike ranged adc they don't have the ranged advantage nor do they have low cd self peels, hence why they're mostly/all pubstompers.
That's why there should be a clear ranged and melee distinguishing factors instead of "well, ranged is better in every way".
Because if Caitlyn is dealing 1000 DPS to you and you have 2000 HP then most people are lucky to reach her with half their health.
There are really only a handful of damage-oriented melee champs that fall into this pattern. Darius and Riven fall off pretty hard. Renekton, sort of. But those three all have really strong early games.
Most of the others are either hypercarries (Yi, Jax, Trynd, Fiora, Irelia, Nasus, Poppy...), do better built as tanks (Aatrox, Garen, Jarvan, Malphite, Rammus...), or they're assassins (Diana, Fizz, Yasuo...)
