Question about Chests

I apologize if this is the wrong forum or if this has been addressed before.

As I understand it the hextech crafting system is supposed to be targeted at casual players as well as hardcore Leaguers. I don't remember where i heard that. As I understand it there are two ways to get chests. You or someone in your group (still not clear if this means pre-made party or if it has to be one of the group/club/guild things.) earns an S you get a chest based on a rotating schedule. Or you buy them with RP.

I'm a pretty casual player. I don't play much ranked and I, regrettably, don't have time to spam games. I'm a pretty solid player but I'm not someone who carries games. I tend to lean toward the support style aspect of Jungle or top lane tanking and I try to get my more capable team mates fed so they can have the spotlight. It's what works best for me to win games. As a result I very rarely earn S ranks. I also very rarely play with others. My schedule is partly to blame for this but it's also because I am, admittedly, old and cranky.

So I'm sitting with 10 keys, not fragments, actual keys, on my account and no chests. Is this something I just need to accept and spend the small amount of RP I can afford to buy on chests?

I'm well aware that a large portion of the comments that will potentially be placed here will be of the "git gud" variety. SO you can save yourself the time. Or feel free to let them fly and I'll sift through to find any useful content.

Well, grades compare you to others on the same champ and in the same role, so if you choose a champ/role combo that is typically played in a manner that doesn't garner many kills, getting an S is still quite feasible without many kills, and the pile of assists you get from pushing your teammates into the spotlight can produce S grades as long as you're strong in other areas too (warding/objectives/etc). So I wouldn't feel held back by your particular playstyle, and while your skill level might not necessarily be up to S rank standards most of the time, there are the occasional stompy games where you might get them anyway, so theres always hope.

You can only get one S rank chest per champion per season though, so if you only play the same handful of champs, you'll probably earn their chests relatively early on and be out of luck for the rest of the season. If so, then your only options would be to either buy chests with RP, or just pretend hextech crafting isn't a thing and ignore your keys.

If you do venture out on champions you don't have an S rank on, if someone in your premade party (not necessarily your club) gets an S, that'll unlock the chest for the champion you're playing as well. If you rarely use premades though, that's not really an option.
