What are the Champion Mastery Chests displayed on my summoner page?

Just to be clear here is what I'm talking about: http://imgur.com/XwfKLlD I think that this is somehow related to crafting but when I go to my crafting inventory there are no chests displayed there (I can see 'Open (0)' where the keys are located).

That means you can earn 4 chests right now. You earn chests by playing a new champion and getting an S with them. You can only earn 1 chest per champion per season

As you earn chests, the chests available count goes down. I believe they recharge at a rate of 1 every week.
