Why can't Xin Zhao effectively play top lane anymore?

So, I've recently come back to playing League after a 3 year... almost 4 year break. Needless to say the game has changed a lot since then. Back then I used to play Nasus, Renekton, Garen, Rumble, Warwick, and Xin Zhao top lane all the time. After coming back most top lane champs that were decent picks back then are still decent picks now, all except for Xin Zhao (and maybe WW but I haven't tried him out top lane yet), whose existence has largely been relegated to the jungle. Everyone I ask keeps telling me he isn't a good choice for top lane anymore, even though before his existence was easily split between the 2. most guides for Xin are assuming the position of jungler. And after being back for about a month and a half now I agree with them. I've tried my best in top lane with Xin Zhao and I get stomped on in one way or another, even if I manage to secure a couple kills, I'll fall behind on CS because of constant harassment from the enemy jung, so much so that nearly every game I've played top with him I wont complete my first item, usually trinity force, until around 20 minutes in. Xin Zhao has always fallen off late game, which makes the slow start even worse, as my team is already flaming me about being behind and having been killed a few times by a combo effort from the enemy top and jungle, which by around the 9-10 minutes mark can usually harass me until I'm under turret and then proceed to kill me under it. I'd like to be able to play Xin Zhao in top lane again as well as for him to be a viable top lane champ, as he was one of my favorite champs to take up there and not have people ask me why I'm not going jungle with him.

Because he's melee with no poke and his sustain relies on 3 hits kind of like another terrible champ. He's not especially effective against tanks and heavy cc fucks him up. You can only really use his ult toplane as a disengage or a "fuck off don't gank me" button. He's not exactly bad top lane but he's infinitely better jungle.

Thats exactly the thing that bothers me though, he wasn't always like this, he used to be a decent top lane champ. It seems like riot really over expressed the worst parts of his kit and made it so that he is no longer an effective top lane champ. I don't understand, I've seen posts where Riot has said they are trying to make it so that champs don't have just a narrow existence, such as in jungle only champs or mid only champs... yet...

They haven't really done anything bad to him. He was always a better jungler than top. But with the addition of juggernauts he started to fall off. He can't face a urgod darius or illaoi. Nothing with his kit since he's all about engaging like classic bruisers, but tanks are just better than bruisers.

the problem is anyone with ranged top will force him to leave lane constantly. The Tanks top will laugh at his damage since he needs a few items before he can start melting. Another few that needs to get close to him no longer need that since he jumps to them. Like a Fiora top lane will always beat him, because his knock up is predictable by just counter his auto attacks.

Oh I know the feeling trust me, my main top laner was Shyvana which I have been playing her there as practically my only top laner since Season 3. Though in Season 3-4 she wasn't really great top either but she was definitely viable and then in Season 5 she had her little spot light for a few patches where she became god tier top lane (or at least in LCS she was) which was when top lane was always Shyvana vs Renekton which I actually loved and had no problem with that match up lol. But now with her changes...shes strong in the jungle and getting nerfs after nerfs which is just making her top lane so much more un-viable...I barely play her top lane anymore, even though she is my favorite champion and I love that champion to death..and since I suck at and hate jungle, I almost never get a chance to play her.

Though personally...I'll always still consider her my favorite top laner and will still play her every once in a while. She can still function top lane and can be insane when a head but a lot of her match ups where she used to win them has just gotten a lot harder and even if she can win lane against some of them....just doesn't offer nearly as much as some other meta top laners to their team.

The only thing I would say is...just play Xin top lane if you want to in Normals, but probably not best to bring him top in ranked Unless you see their top laner first and you know you can win that match up. But honestly still might be best to only play him top in normals, which is what I do with Shyvana. Just have fun with the champions you play and try to get better.

I disagree. He literally STOMPS on champions like Gnar , Fiora , Illaoi , Camille etc.

Take electrocute with sudden impact and ignite, then start EQ'ing the sht out of your laner by lvl 2. I can give a more detailed tip with build if you'd like.

Only con is he's weak vs ranged champs and tanks who aren't squishy early game E.G. Malphite and can't really disengage before lvl 6.

They balanced him around his jungling.
