Why is ranked LP and match making so broken?

xxWhiskyBobxx··2 votes·1,441 views

I really don't get it... Riot and their matchmaker seem absolutely desperate to demote me for some reason. I get 10-12 LP for a win and lose 20-22 LP per loss. So, it's pretty trivial math to do to see that I need to win at >65% to even creep up ladder. 65%!!!! Let that sink in. Then, on top of it, it gives me teammates that are WELL below my tier. For example, I was S4 and I'm getting teammates that are in iron and low bronze. I get S grades and do the most dmg for my team etc, yet it's not enough.

Riot might as well just insta-demote you to whatever tier the MMR wants you to be at. This is just a slow, pointless, and painful decay of my ranking with zero hope of ever climbing.

Why can't Riot just institute a real Elo system that has been used for decades??? What is this crap of the matchmaker just trying to demote the crap out of you? Put people of the same tier together in a game. It's really not that mystical.

Riots MMR system stacks games.

It ether thinks you

  1. Should be Falling
  2. Should be Climbing
  3. Should stay where you are (Hard stuck)

It will stack games to make those happen

If you are Hard Stuck you will get win/loss/win/loss/win/win/loss/loss and there is NOTHING you can do about it.

You will be put on teams with Climbers to counter when you are put on teams with Fallers. Riot will stack a Climbers team with other Climbers and Hard stuck depending on how much RIot thinks they should climb.

Faller teams will have other Fallers and Hard Stuck.

This means that Games are for the most part out side of Luck already known what side will win.

Luck or Tilt is the only thing that can throw a wrench in Riots stupid system.

Those that are Hard Stuck have only 2 ways to get unstuck.

  1. Get boosted
  2. Cheat

Riot cant really catch #1 because they are FINE with Smurfs and Duos

By Duoing with a Smurf Riot see the Smurf as a Climber and you are always linked to the Climber so will also Climb. You get out of the Ping Pong of games.

I hate this venomously because it Ruins what Rank is suppose to be.

You're not entirely wrong but also very much not right.

The Ping Pong games are real but they are a solvable problem. You need to play better. This entire explanation runs off the idea that winning = everything but that isn't what the MMR system is for. It's meant to balance skill to create an even game. The "Ping Pong" games if you look at them tend to be people other than you losing their matchups because the other players aren't performing well. It doesn't inherently have anything to do with the gamethinking you're "Hardstuck" it's not a biased system, it's giving you a chance to win games at every turn it doesn't balance you in with losers for no reason.

You like many are talking as if Riot uses a ELO system. They dont. They use their own system that works for Riot's Business Model.

Seriously... my only option is to just stop playing on this account and start another it seems. It makes the rankings feel totally false too. I don't get why they don't implement a standard match making algorithm and use the Elo system. They've tried to be clever and produced something that doesn't work at all.

It does work though and making a new account will only put you behind where your MMR is at. Since realistically if you do your placements it'll figure out your MMR and put you 1-2 ranks or MORE behind where it thinks you should be. If you don't bring your gameplay up you'll never climb out of where you're at now and regardless of how the penguin thinks the system works it does work exactly like it's supposed to and generally people end up where they are supposed to be based on how they are playing.

I will spam this comment at your face until you get that it's your own fault you have poor winrate and can't climb. You're hardstuck only because your skills are limited and belong in that silver tier.

Friendly hint: If you really want to climb in ranked, I recommend you to do the following things:

  1. Don't waste energy on tantruming about irrelevant things such as teammates or Riot's matchmaking.

  2. Realize you are probably not as good player as you think. Noticing and accepting your own flaws is the first (and only) step to improvement.

  3. Play to win. Many players only want to maximize their KDAs/Damage dealt and they believe those factors alone will make them win. No. After all, League of Legends is still a strategy game, where every little action and decision matters. Good players think what they should do next in order to win the game instead of just staring at the scoreboard.

  4. Learn the game. Tip number 3 requires a change of mindset but also a lot of game knowledge. It's essential to understand concepts like META, wave management, priority and how each role, champion and matchup works. Before the game even begins, you should come up with an ingame plan based on your analysis. Once the match gets rolling, every move you do should have a valid reason why you commit it. There are some fine guides on Youtube you can have a look at, such as Skillcapped or Pro Guides. They might help you on this matter.

  5. Take your time. No-one gets superior skills instantly. Practise with patience and maintain the correct mindset, and you will learn and get better for sure.

You'd need a 65% winrate if you gained a flat amount of LP but if you were averaging a 65% winrate your LP gain would normalise around 22LP making it needing like what 52%ish lol

you've won 6 out of 20 games in your recent ranked history, that's why your lp gains r fuckin dead cause you aren't climbing

if you go on lose streaks you also get put in games with people who are in lose streaks

It started long before my losing streak. It's been going on for well over a month now (it actually started when I was in S3 -> S2 promos). And my LP win value has never "normalized." That's the problem. I've gone on decent winning streaks (>70% for 20 games) and it has never fixed a thing. I still gain and lose at a terribly disproportionate rate. If things are supposed to normalize, I certainly have seen 0 evidence for it.

Also the reason I'm losing is that it gives me these teams where if I don't hard carry, I won't win. I can have fabulous games and still lose.

It's because of the MMR System. You're not playing well is the short of it. Just by taking a glance at your play history I can spot things like zero control wards, low CS, low KP, etc. Your MMR is looking to be Bronze 2/3 based on what I'm seeing so you being in Bronze 1 means that the game thinks your ranked higher than you should be based on how you're playing.

Control your side of the map not just your lane. Focus on efficiently farming and being in your lane doing what you're supposed to do with that gnar build which is split push. Ward up(CONTROL WARDS) and roam when you have priority and your MMR will go up and your LP gains will normalize out.

Then why is the game giving me S grades?

Inf1nity Sevyn1 votes

Ratings are based off of comparisons with other players mostly, they are weighted and since Gnar isn't a high pick, play or winrate champ it has a relatively low curve to get an S-/S. That doesn't have anything to do with your lane management or MMR it is based more off of your K/D/A and your overall averages compared to other players. Other players are doing the same thing as you in short but that doesn't translate to a high MMR. The systems are not connected so you can get an S, lose a game and still have a b2/b3 MMR if you rack up 15 kills.

This is where I am. I get to S1 Promos and get stacked games with AFKers and feeder on my team. Lose Promos and then win some to get back in to Proms

If I for some luck win Promos I then get 5+ games of complete trash and get Demoted.

There is nothing I can do because I SoloQ

What I need to do is Duo with a SMurf and get boosted out of this shit "Stuck State" and then my games "MAY" be better Matched.

Brainless say "its you man 4/9 bla bla math that has no validity to Riots system" But when Im Warding and Pinging MIA and not feeding my lane and helping the Jungler in the River and Roaming and my team is NOT doing any of that and feeding its not me.

So you just admitted it yourself. If a smurf (aka better player) can win games for you, then why can't you do it yourself? Because lack of game skills.

It is because matchmaking is bad and aimed at forcing players to play more games. If you're on losing streak you will get similar players and it is hard to break it unless you're solo carrying games.

If you're losing more lp than you gain, it simply means you're at a rank higher than your mmr. To improve mmr you just need to keep winning even with bad team mates it gives. Like penguin says it is more of your luck, because in low silver players can feed and be like 0/10 in 10 minutes. It will just be a game to see which team has more feeders.

I would suggest you to start with new account, but again ranking is pessimistic. So you will have to play more games on it to climb.

If we look at your account on opgg we can clearly see why you are dropping: 47% WR. Riot is not trying to hinder anyone from climbing, do you think people just randomly hit Challenger tier? Skill expression exists and that is the only thing that separates players from each others.
