What about Aatrox?

Why is Aatrox left to be in a such a bad position? Every other top laner either zones him out, or outscales him. He is in this dumb situation where he isn't good enough to fight early game cause of minion-like stats, and he doesn't scale at all. He isn't tanky, he doesn't have good damage. Even building him as a tank doesn't let him survive for long. He is 100% AA reliant, which makes him very easy to be kited. Most people will say "but look at his uber sustain, and that OP passive!". But let's take a look at them: to heal yourself up you need to AA something. If you're zoned out, there's no way you can AA to heal. You can'd do anything. Can't even spam E cause of the HP cost. Passive: yea revive is a pretty cool passive, but it has very long CD, and while it is on CD, he doesn't have a passive.

I just can't see what's he good at, why should anyone pick him over other top lane, or even jungle champion.
