How should I lane against a Sona?

So, how should I lane against this little monster? It seems like whatever damage is done to her ADC, she just negates ALL of it by healing her back up, and then she pokes tf out of me and my adc as punishment. I have almost always lose lane against her, and I don't know what I should be doing differently. Keep it mind, I don't even have Ranked play unlocked yet, so I'm just trying my best in Normal (Draft Pick) until then. Just keep that in mind before you: http://static.tumblr.com/o3mfifg/ngYm9lhnh/flame_on__2_.gif .

Depends on who you play as adc/support. If you play a squishy utility support, build MR like item 3190 and other items to help negate the damage for you and your ADC, and poke her down if she comes within range to Q you.

If you play a tanky lockdown support, engage on her when she comes in. Focus her in gank fights, and watch out for her stun.

These are a few tips to help you.

For me, I do one of two things;

  • I grab an Ancient Coin and I tell my ADC to farm passively. We do absolutely nothing to them and don't play to her strenghts, and Sona gets no benefit from her Spellthief's. We don't really "win" lane, but our net worth ends up better.

  • I ask for ganks, and focus Sona in between her W shields. Fighting them through her shields just increases its efficiency, kind of like letting Nami's heal bounce. Also try to never let her Q hit both of you.

Honestly as a Sona main, I could punish that hard. (at least in match ups in my Elo.)

You would need to pair some level of counter engage if you are going to play passively. Otherwise, I could begin to out poke you and force you away. (Simply put it, if staying out of range is your main defense, I can continue to zone you.)

Also, If I have that Zoning Advantage, I typically use that time to place vision in the river. Which will reduce the likely hood that a gank will be successful. (Save for unusual gank patters or TP ganks)

Your best bet is to dive sona, Ideally when she's away from her ADC. Which is why pick supports like Blitz who can separate her from her ADC can punish her hard.

Sonas really squishy, so bursting her down will make her think twice about poking you. She's basically harmless when her q is on cd, so don't be put off by the intial q burst and use that as a murder opportunity.

If she's forced to spam her heal, she'll end up oom fairly quickly as well.

Support main chiming in, with more time on Sona than any other support. Sona is indeed, when done properly, a big lane bully. When I'm on the receiving side of a Sona, personally I like going healer. Nami is usually my default, but Soraka still outheals anyone, including Sona, and has the potential to work just as well.

Shielding is another option. Janna or Morgana with well timed shields keep your adc quite healthy. Just remember that leaves you as a target for her damage instead and respond accordingly. If you and your adc can pick after the Sona pick, a ranged adc is typically a good option. The harder you make it for Sona to hit with her Q, the better. For closer range, Sivir is not bad with her shield as well. A double shield lane is definitely annoying for any Sona.

End of the day, Sona is all about the quick poke and rush away. Her weakness has always been how squishy she is up close. Another option is always a full tank that barely feels her damage. Or Blitz. A well timed Blitz grab is always the bane of any Sona's existence.

usually i just play really aggressively and try to focus sona, and if i die then i just turn it into a farm lane until i get a gank

According to the community, you can do anything against her for a free win because her heals and poke are both "bad", so therefore she's a "trash" champion and anything beats her :^^^^^)))))))

Eh..... on all seriousness....

Because Sona is based on not-so-bad sustain with run in, poke, run away poke, you either outsustain her "once in a while" poke, or ignore her poke and just fish her off with tanks.

What's actually good against her: Leona Soraka Draven What's not bad against her, but isn't insta-win: Blitzcrank Thresh Alistar What kind of things to avoid: Lulu Janna Morgana Bard

The first one's a given. 1) Leona can easily fish her out even if Sona tries to poke, and that Leona can "pierce" through minion waves, 2) Raka invalidates Sona's "periodic" poke, and 3) Super-bursty ADCs like Draaaaaven can very easily kill her if she steps in way too close.

Thresh, Alistar, and Blitz just needs a little bit of extra positioning to make botlane a living hell. If not, they will suffer like you do.

Why Lulu, Janna, and Morgana? Disengage in general isn't useful if the enemy has very little/no cc and are ranged; Sona fits perfectly into the "ranged no cc" category. Bard's pokes are just as "periodic" like Sona's, which is the perfect enemy that any Sona would want to see. Yeah, yeah, it may hurt, but by the time Bard gets to poke again, Sona has already healed herself/her allies enough back to full health.

Sona is my second most played support and she's overall very straightfoward to deal with.

Wow, thanks for the good advice guys, did not expect all this to come in so fast. I'm gonna try to focus her more and not her and her adc, but it seems really hard to gank her still with her escape, but I thin I'll be having an easier time laning now :)
