PLAYTESTED Ryze nerfs

  • Reduce Supercharged duration to 3 seconds + (Desperate Power rank) from 6 seconds at all ranks.
  • Reduce Overload base damage to 65 / 90 / 115 / 140 / 165 from 65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185.
  • Reduce Desperate Power's duration to 4 / 5 / 6 seconds per rank from 6 seconds at all ranks.

REVERT THE 5.10 BUFFS.

Pre-rework Ryze had his niche in the top lane, and had a recognized late-game power spike. I don't think the update was necessary, but at least Riot is giving attention to older champs with outdated skillsets (point-and-click too stronk). It frustrates me to see a champion [who was in a reasonable place] overlooked and ridiculed by the community. Now that he recevied buffs, the pro players caught on to his power and it trickled down the ranked system.

5.8 / 5.9 Ryze had a weak early game. This made him unrealistic for the midlane seeing as he couldn't realistically contest dragon due to a lack of pressure. He was also still new, and people didn't know how to build him properly. Players continued to level his Q first, when in reality W and E maxes are often much better (given the situation). Players also continued to itemize incorrectly, over-capping his CDR with items like FH / SV, where in reality a straight AP build was much better. His level 11 power spike was real, allowing him to go from 2 - 3 ability rotations during Supercharged, to 3 - 4. Late-game he was still a powerhouse (provided he could get to it), chaining snares like the monster we currently see plaguing the top lane.

I'm not a champion designer, nor do I have experience with all this 'champion diversity' rito keeps pushing. I understand there are problems with the lack of counterplay during his passive. Riot has said they want to move away from the Annie mentality, where there is a certain zone you have to respect when she has 3 or 4 stacks of her passive. But all champions have this to some degree... Maokai's snare range, Mega-Gnar's Hop + ulti range... Ryze has this same counterplay: move away when he has his passive or get fcked. Not to mention during his machine gun phase, he's immbobile, and has a roughly ~6 second window of vulnerability once it's over because it takes about that long to get into another Supercharged mode. He has his weaknesses.

I know there are issues that I'm overlooking with my suggested changes. Like I said, I'm no design expert. My main point is that Ryze was hailed as a giant flop of a rework by the community. Personally I heard Voyboy and Scarra both say that he was crap (paraphrasing). I'm sure other pro players had similar opinions that didn't get to me. Even after the 5.10 buffs, I watched a video of Voyboy playing Ryze and he still insisted that he was 'meh, 7/10.' I love both the streamers. They always have great information. But with these changes, Ryze got the spotlight. His power was showcased in the LCS. And everyone followed suit. I just wish players gave more of a chance to new changes rather than herd to popular opinion.

TL;DR My changes don't eliminate his inherent design flaws. Reworked Ryze had a late game niche. But 5.10 buffed Ryze is too strong. Bring back 5.8 / 5.9 Ryze now that people know the capability of his kit.

Wow, a 6 second window of "weakness." Allow me to capitalize on that while I'm rooted and getting blown up.
