Is Rek'Sai overpowered?

Laughing Fish··4 votes·3,882 views

Greetings fellow summoners!

I have noticed that Rek'Sai is banned in almost every ranked game I play. Many people say the reason why is because she is overpowered. So I decided I wanted to see what the community really thinks? Is Rek'Sai OP? Why or why not?

Her base damage is a fair bit too oppressive in lane. Compare her QWE combo to Xin's for a nice contrast.

Of course, Riot is hitting her scaling instead. Late game Rek really isn't her issue. Her problem is how easily she can destroy people in lane.

I wouldn't say that she's 'OP'. I save that term for champions who are actually warping the game in a negative way. She is overtuned, however.

Apparently Rek is getting her base damage on her Q nerfed as well as her ratios reduced.

does more damage den xin early game gg rito nerf rek sai like they nerfed xin. rito buff xin q make it 4 second cd so he can use e all the time

Rek'Sai is a little too good in a lot of categories:

  1. Really high base damage on spammable, low CD spells. Her Q does a total of 285 bonus damage in an AoE and acts as an auto-reset. Her E does a few hundred physical/true damage. Couple them together with burrowed Q and W, she does a large amount of burst and sustained damage.

  2. Sustain is pretty ridiculous, especially in lane. Top-lane Rek'sai can trade whenever she feels like it, disengage with E and just push the wave and sustain. It's honestly broken. Worse than Renekton IMO.

  3. Mobility that is out of control. Yes it takes time to "set-up" but if you have even just one tunnel up (and E off cool-down), then you can jump-in and out of fights really easily. Really strong in skirmishes and in just traversing the map. Not to mention that her tunnels make her ungankable in lane (and this is TRULY the definition of ungankable. A marginal CD on up to 3-5 dashes, you literally can't touch her). Coupling TP and your ult also makes for surprisingly strong map-presence with absolutely no trade-offs in top-lane (something, few other top-laners have).

I focused a lot on lane Rek'Sai, but high damage, low CDs, sustain and strong map-presence are all very good in the Jungle as well. Basically, she has too many strengths, and not enough weaknesses to compensate.

i went for nerf lee sin Reksai is a champion that is overtuned because it only has 2 abilities to actually fight with. If her ult did damage. Yes I could see her needing nerfs. If her W did damage yes I could see her needing nerfs. But all she has is Q and E and her Q underground doesnt even scale with AD its just 180 at max rank and is on a relatively lmoderate CD for not even dealing that much damage. Though it is able to be cast the moment you press W so theres no delay between burrow Q unborrow above ground Q. Which adds fluidity to the kit that most other kits lack.

She doesn't have to stand around alot and that is a power most people don't take into consideration when they think of a kit.

If there was a global cooldown of 1-2 seconds per burrow/unborrow I could say she's balanced just fine but there isnt she can immediately cast all abilties like any other form changing champion in the game ofc.

I think that once you nerf rek sai you'll never see her because she'll be far weaker than other picks.

my two cents would have to be Buff her sustain(consuming fury+consumption rate) Buff her maxed out fury damage(true damage should be around 500 at max rank~... its very difficult to keep fury full so a player should feel rewarded for getting to max fury and using it correctly) nerf her Q above ground with a higher CD and lower base stats and max her underground Q a second or two longer on CD. That should be more than enough

oh and her ult CD is very harsh. So is her tunneling CD considering both are basically halmark "rek sai" things you'd think they would be used a bit more often. But I don't think they need to be buffed. Just a side note.

I just want to point out that this post pretty much sums it up. I can't tell you the last time I ever used her R for anything other than rushing back to jungle or the occasional gank setup. Yes, the passive attack speed is very useful, but stop and think about what she actually brings to a fight!

Q(above ground) - Primary damage dealing ability, incredible wave clear and AoE damage, requires you to be on top of the enemy to use effectively. Q(below ground) - Skill shot with mediocre damage on a short cooldown, AP scaling (useless for any real build), gives vision of target for 2 seconds. Currently I think it is bugged and vision isn't instantaneous. W - Great AoE knockup, relatively short range, not repeatable for a few seconds, requires you to be underneath your target for maximum effect. This right here is why Rek'sai will either destroy you or get crushed. If you do not build tanky, you will not have enough time to get on point and use this ability. Also a good point to mention that the sustain from consuming fury is really good after the first few levels. E(above ground) - Decent damage, Great damage when full fury, Rek'sai's only other dueling ability, requires charging for maximum effect. E(below ground) - amazing mobility on a relatively short cooldown, reusable tunnels, easily spotted and destroyed. Actually useful as a form of indirect vision control, and bait.
R - amazing passive attack speed bonus. Ultimate is useful for repositioning but requires pre-placed tunnels which can be a huge negative because most of the time enemies will destroy your tunnels on sight. Easy to hide one end of the tunnel, not the other. Great for rushing back to your own jungle and farming.

The point is: only two of these abilities provide any meaningful damage, with a kit designed for hunting and destroying fairly quickly. The more time Rek'sai has to spend fighting a target, the more likely she is going to die. By taking away from her damage, you make it that much harder for her to do her job effectively.

I want to make it clear that these changes hurt JUNGLE Rek'sai much more than they do lane Rek'sai. Jungle Rek'sai will suffer tremendously.

They are doing some balance changes on the PBE, not sure if they'll go live as she seems to be falling off now that people know how to counter her. Just the initial "OMG OP" stuff.

Laughing Fish3 votes

Yeah, I personally think she is fine. It just takes awhile for people to get used to her, as she is very different from other champs.

GanksLikeGast0n1 votes

Exactly, she is so unique that people are just having a hard time learning how to play her or against her. Also she was the first champ in a long while to not be riddled with crippling bugs on release, so people are probably in shock.

Laughing Fish1 votes

Lol, a good point. I think talk of her being OP will die off in a few weeks.

coppinslinger1 votes

I've only seen Rek'sai's winrate go up and up. It was over 50% when she was released, and its 55% now. The highest in the game. If left untouched I think she could approach 56-57% easily.

If anything, people are learning to abuse her more and more than counter her.

Leti the Yeti2 votes

im honestly not sure what allowed me to rek top lane i only recalled hitting em with my q and magically out trading everyone

coppinslinger1 votes

Its called "Base Damage."

And your passive. Oh lord that passive.

SouL1ess1 votes

Her unburrowed Q is resourceless + Low CD trade tool and it deals the same damage as an AD assassin's main poke over 3 hits

Which, in a bruiser lane / Jungle, is quite powerful.

Laughing Fish3 votes

But she is easier to kite than most assassins.

SouL1ess1 votes

you can kite while trading at melee top?

I'm not talking about her teamfight. I'm talking about her laning. It's the same issue as Darius, trading against him is mostly in his favour instead of yours.

Laughing Fish1 votes

Would you consider Darius OP as well?

SouL1ess1 votes

Darius is OP in lane and he should not lose 1v1 vs. melee tops ever.

But he is not OP as a champion in the meta because he has a lot of trouble reaching targets.

Khorne1 votes

Gapclosers, health regen, AoE, true damage, teleport, skillshot, long range 'detection'... Nah. Perfectly balanced.Shaco

GanksLikeGast0n2 votes

A non targeted one-way gapcloser

Very low health regen dependent on a surviving an engagement

true damage dependent on maintaining a sustained engagement for several seconds

a teleport that requires you to have a permanently visible, easily destroyed tunnel prepositioned,

A skillshot with ridiculously low base damage and scaling off of a stat she doesn't use,

'Detection' That only shows movement

Pæan1 votes

The most irritating, and the coolest thing about Rek'Sai is her tremor sense... I hate it so much when jungling vs her, as i love Shaco/Evelynn, but now you cant juke her and you definitely cant outrun her. So RIP stealth champs :(

soliznoel1 votes

i dont think her Q's should crit, because if you compare her closest counterpart, riven, do riven's Q's crit? no.

SouL1ess1 votes

i don't think her Q bonus damage is added when doing crit calculations?

At least, her Q's AoE damage cannot crit; she can only crit against her main AA target.

GanksLikeGast0n2 votes

Riven Q's aren't auto attacks. And if you are building the items to reliably crit then she is way too squishy to do anything in teamfights.

Narasimha1 votes

No, the closest thing would be Xin Zhao's Q. And does it crit? Yes.

DoraTheBrown1 votes

but xin zhaos q does normal auto crit + the q damage so it doesn't really make the q do more damage. and reksai has a higher ratio and base damage

Narasimha1 votes

And Xin's AAs reduce his CDs and has a knockup, but thats not the point. The literal point is that these are AA modifiers, and that Riven's Q is most certainly not one.

Grimspeake1 votes

the detection thing is bullshit, take that out and shes fine.

Kuroi861 votes

I don't see an issue. Powerful bruiser early game. Transitions into a decent utility tank/bruiser late game. People gotta learn how to deal with her, then we'll have a better idea of how strong she is.

TheKingDodo1 votes

Reksai's ult is a utility spell and if the enemy's all over your shit you almost can't use it. I don't get why people are complaining about it so much. It's not like a shen ult which can change team fights, or a tf/panth ult for picking off stragglers. Panth actually does a better job of dishing out tons of damage and surviving than reksai early due to his executions and blocks and his ult being much more versatile although much less ranged and much less fast than rek. reksai however has sustain which isn't as OP as people make her out to be. contrary to popular belief her passive does not negate entire ignites: ignite does 50+20•lvl and reduces heals by 50% reksai 100 fury heals for 25 • Rek'Sai's level and her base Regen at lvl 18 is 18.4. (25•18+18.4)•1.4 (SV bonus) = 655.76 with ignite reduction that's 327.88 ignite does 50+20•18 = 410 damage so no, perfectly timed ignites will out damage her max heal. She also can't access this heal in the heat of battle. so she relies on LS like everyone else. Her tunnels are pretty damn slow and destroying them is pretty damn easy. Overall: she's not as OP as people make her out to be, but she's certainly not out of meta. (people hate the meta so I guess they hate reksai).

Basamian1 votes

She isn't overpowered, the new jungle is. They gave her sustain, aoe clear and she's manaless, pretty much everything you need for the new jungle. So few champs are able to even survive, let alone farm the new jungle that she just seems strong. If this were S4 jungle but with all other pre-season changes the same, Rek'sai would be a decent but not all that strong pick.

DarkArmKishin1 votes

I would have to say...Slightly.She falls into the category of champions that can be godlike if-

A.You are in a premade team, and constantly communicating. B.You are very good with her!

(Ashe is also a champion that falls into this category.)

Her early game seems a bit..Weak.And you will need a good bit of attack speed to do much, while balancing a good deal of armor, because she is squishy as hell. And while her ult is very underrated in my opinion, those tunnels are very easy to spot, and destroy.I have a few problems with her,but she seems okay in my book.

Although,i will be sticking is Vi,thank you.

Azteryz1 votes

her kit has too much utility which im fine with but it has way to much dmg scaling so they need to nerf that especially on the q (which they are in pbe)

DoraTheBrown1 votes

rek sai 0 damage her q has 0 base damage and very sht ratio she got 0 mobility 0 clears 0 true damage rito buff plz, but ye I hate seeing rek'sai's since they snowball harder den panth

Stephenizgod1 votes

I think her damage is a little too high for how fast you can get it off, its not like its hard to use her either. Plus her mobility and tankiness make it hard for anyone to beat her in a trade or escape her. Her knock-up is also very annoying, but i think we are all just tired of knock-ups in general.

stealthfox941 votes

She would be fine if her Q had an actual CD

brad1 votes

is this a real question

Iittala1 votes

And.. nerf lee sin

NoMonku1 votes

She can easily snowball out of control if you aren't careful and let her get fed. Think of it like old Yasuo/Kass bans. She has high mobility, which is one thing that will often receive bans. Also as she is the newest champion, there are still people who don't know how to deal with her so there is that.

I just feel her main strength is that she feels like she was designed for the new jungle, with it in mind, so she is above the curve of everyone else as they were put there, whereas she was CREATED with it. Until other champions get some love or she gets hit with the nerf hammer(in which case she will probably be gone forever) she will still be dominant for now.

DanaoIxUv1 votes

I would say the rather recent changes to her R (where you no longer can dodge it) certainly put her over the top.

However the nerfs to Conqueror and the nerfs directly targeted at her have brought her down to a reasonable state.
