Essence Reaver Idea

Essence reaver idea: Essence reaver should be an enchantment for TriForce (i think most people who would build essence reaver also build TriForce, thats why i thought of this item). It costs 700 gold and converts 3% of your damage dealt against minions, monsters or champions into mana. What are your thoughts?

In my opinion, the problem with Essence Reaver as it currently exists is that you buy it for the mana regen, but none of the components individually offer any mana regen. If you can get by fine with no mana regen until you can complete Essence Reaver, you probably don't need the mana regeneration (and hence the Essence Reaver). And if you can't, then you also can't afford to wait that long to buy a mana regeneration item. Champions who build mana regeneration items usually do so early. Thus, all the other mana regeneration items can be purchased pretty easily on the first back (Tear = 700g, Chalice = 880g, Forbidden Idol = 700g) and then built into something better.

Of the three early mana regeneration items, only Tear of the Goddess builds into an AD item. It would be nice to have more options for early mana regeneration for AD casters. Personally, I'd like Essence Reaver changed to build out of Vampiric Scepter + Pickaxe + Forbidden Idol + 825 Gold. The components are individually useful and, with the exception of Forbidden Idol, build into common AD items.

The thing is, I can't really see myself building the Idol in lane. It would be something I'd only complete if I backed without enough gold for the full thing, and if that happened, I'd still probably build some AD so I didn't lose terribly to the other guy. The mana regen from it isn't strong enough for me to build it. I'd really want a a smaller component item that gave AD and had the reaver passive attached so I could build it without being so horribly screwed from not having combat stats early on.

Yes it has the same problem as Tear in that it doesn't give any combat stats. But for Jayce and other AD casters who would build Tear, Idol has approximately the same mana regeneration but trades the stacking max mana increase for some CDR. If Forbidden Idol built into Essence Reaver, I could see myself getting it instead of Tear of the Goddess.

I suppose what we need is some sort of analogue to Vampiric Scepter that builds out of Longsword or some sort of Dorain's Reaver item that returns mana on hit. It would have to grant 80 AD when fully upgraded or no one would build it, but the intermediate parts would have to grant a mini version of the ER passive that is both significant enough to be worth building while not being overly powerful.

E.G. something like the following: Spellblade = Longsword + Sapphire Crystal + 40g +10 Attack Damage +200 Mana Unique Passive: Your basic attacks restore X% of the damage dealt as mana.

Also, what if Essence Reaver functioned similarly to Bloodthirster but converted excess healing to mana instead of to a shield?

For Jayce, maybe. Didn't think about that. I guess it would probably help him. I've heard of some people building both muramana and essence reaver on him to ensure more max-damage muramana procs.

And yeah, a subitem definitely may be needed if we want it to be good for caster AD carries.

I'm not sure about the converting excess thing. It makes it poor for extended trading because if you trade a lot you're unlikely to stay at full health. It would also slow down your regen back to full strength if you were trying to use it to stay out on the field. GIven that those are the two main purposes, I'm not certain that it would help much. Maybe it would allow some number buffs, in which case it might work better.
