Key shard drop rate?

Umbra Intra··2 votes·3,160 views

Alright so when Hextech Crafting dropped, I was picking up key shards left and right. It seemed like a drop every other win or so. But, I haven't gotten one in around the last seventy games. So, is the drop rate really low or am I just unlucky?

Key shard are legendary items

I'll take over key shard over a stupid skin Hextech Annie for dayz

I'm debating that myself. I have 2 skins shards and a gem which mean I can trade in that gem for a chest and that would give me another skin shard. So I could trade in 3 for a free perma skin or possible sell one for essence which would get me 2 skins possible. Or just wait it out for a key and 9 more gems. I am still torn over it.

The more key shards you get, the less likely you are to get them. BUT (and this is the important thing) The chances reset after a month. As soon as things reset this month I grabbed up like 6 key shards in like 3 days. Last 3 weeks it's been like 3 more. Don't worry, give it a little bit of time and you'll see the drop rate increase again (at least for a little while).

Nah same. I've been stuck at 2 keyshards for honestly about 15 games. Before I was getting one every 2 games or so.

its because the RNG lowers with each one you get, so the crafting thing being free was more or less bullshit. I have gotten one skin since you have to disenchant to unlock them.

imo they might aswell just lower the prices and make getting them for free not a thing.

So if I just stop opening them and save the keys up will my drop rate stay higher?

makes no difference. im pretty sure after a certain amount it becomes impossible to get more.

yeah I read another board that riot said the drop rate resets back to normal 30 days after your first one. So the more you get the harder it is until that reset.

the problem is, there is actually a hard cap on those fragments. riot wants you to accumulate chests to bait you into buying keys for them.

you will never be able to open all of them.

I'd believe it.

Been playing a ton of games the last few weeks (compared to an avg of perhaps 1 or 2 on most days) and still can't earn enough to open all chests

Me too. But can't really blame them. Now that skins are free, they have to get a little cash from you. If I could just buy all the champs and skins for like a $200 package when I first started I probably would have. then like a season pass for like $20 a season to get all the new ones minus like 1 or 2 epic skins or exclusive for purchase only sort of thing. I'd be down for that. But I won't pay $5-$15 per champ when I can't just wait it out and get them for free and get the fun of earning by playing. But the second I have to play to play this game like WoW I will perma-delete client, just like WoW.

its still dirty and manipulative. but i would excpect nothing better of tencent.

its like offering a kid a small bit of crack once a week and then saying. oh well, you dont have to buy more. and dont complain, because im giving you stuff for free.

i mean you know what im saying. it might not be quite as bad, but still theyre deliberately trying to create addictive behaviour patterns.

the reason why keys even exist in the first place is, so they have a system in place that they can give out boxes without giving you a way to open them all. otherwise they would have just been working with the droprates for the boxes themselves or put a smaller global cap on how many you can get per season.

no, theyre much more seductive while theyre sitting in your inventory, and many people will eventually give in and buy a bunch of keys.

no doubt at the end of the season or next season when people have accumulated a couple of chests, theyre gonna do some sale at some point for the keys.

and dont overestimate the loss in money riot takes from those free chests. realistically, with 50% of the chest content being champion shards, then a good portion of the cosmetic content being summoner icons and ward skins, and the additional need to trash a good portion of the cosmetic suff for essence, how many skins do you actually get from the 30 chests that youll be able to open? and with all the skins that exist, whats the probability that one of those chests will contain a skin for a champion youre actually playing?

its very unlikely that you would have bought the skins that are dropping from these free chests anyways. so theyre not actually losing anything by giving you a skin you would never have bought.

on the other hand theyre making boatloads of money from people gambling for hextech annie or the hope that they find something good "cheaper" in the chests. plus the extra money from people buying keys.

Agree -

On the one hand it is fantastic that f2p has access to skins and such, and the ability to "earn" them over time adds another fun cumulative aspect to playing games and different champs.

On the other, you have keys needed to open chests, then 3x key shards needed to get a key, and then of those chests you have champion shards, which are largely useless since you can access champions through IP, and many players already own most/all the champions anyways.

The convolutions of the system are clearly intended for you to feel like you have a lot more than you really do, and if you just put a little money into the system you'd have even more! Forcing people to break down skin shards to get essence is a particularly nice touch. Kind of hard to let go of something that is already sitting there in your inventory, waiting to be claimed.

You almost lost me at the crack dealer comment. All good point. I highly doubt that riot will lose money on the Hextech game. When put the way yall did it does seem a little sneaky. But if you are like me, then you'll never spend money on skins and cosmetic stuff. Not that I can't afford it, I just feel their is no point. Over the years I've spent maybe $150 for RP for champs and rune pages, only because I didn't have the time to grind back then. But in the long run it is still free stuff. I mentioned it somewhere before but if they were to make like a season pass for like $20 a season where you get all the skins and champs of that season minus one or two exclusive skins or a large package deal for say all the champs and all the skins for say $150 I'd consider that. But like you said getting them for the champ you play will take a while so unless the new skin is for then newest champ or the most OP champ at the moment then even owning all of them won't mean they get played.

I've read several forums about these key drop rates and I am switching sides. I think it's to low. Yeah I got it hextech is free skins and stuff but I'm 15+ wins with no key and sitting on 3 chest now. I get chest the day it's available to me most times. I can't open them nearly as fast as I get them. Even when season end comes and I'll have to play not my normal champs, I'm sure I'll have more boxes then keys. With such a low key drop rate, their is really no need to only allow me to get one chest every 5 days or so. Because I'll always be stacking chest faster then keys. It would be nice if it was not random. Like one shard per 10-20 wins, what ever they deem fair. That way I at least have a goal to work towards and know when it's coming. Like hell yeah 2 more wins to a key and chest sort of thing.

I'm still having no issues whatsoever opening each chest as I earn them. What is it, 7 so far? I've got 2 key fragments right now and my next chest will be available tomorrow.

Ignoring what may just be incredible luck on my part, the reason that there's no flat number of wins associated with key shard drops is to better cater to different players. Some don't play very often, maybe a game or two a day, maybe several games on Saturday. Others play more or less non-stop whenever they have free time, dozens and dozens of games. The current system of diminishing returns with each key fragment drop narrows the gap between those that play every so often and those that play continously.

Thurst281 votes

That would be the point of a flat drop. Why should someone get to play 3 games a week. and get a Key. While I have to grind out 3 a day to get one, and that's if I can get a win during prime troll hours. And you seems like you have a real hot streak on keys. It takes me about 15-20 games for one. I think I've opened like 8-10 chest so far. I have no issue with getting more chest then keys. But earning about 2 chest a week (10 days) and opening one every 2 weeks or more is a little off to me.
