It's impossible to climb silver as a support main

Calebpro··30 votes·9,441 views

No matter how much I try to help my team, they throw, they dive, they get caught, I ward the crap out of the river and our jungle but somehow when it all seems to go so well, we lose. Yeah I know whatever 'if you're in silver that's probably where you're supposed to be', I know I'm not the best support anyone's ever seen but I can't help but get mad whenever we're winning and my team just stops thinking and goes kill hungry which almost always means an ace and game over. It pisses me off so much.

If you think that's bad, try being a jungle main when you have three feeding lanes all pinging constantly and asking for ganks, serving themselves up on a silver platter for the enemy jungler to gank as much as they want instead of playing it safe once they're already hemorrhaging kills, gold, and xp, and then them blaming you for it because you weren't able to gank three lanes and turn the tides in a 4v2 that they walked into inside of a bush that you were pinging them to stay away from.

I'm not saying supports don't have it bad. But for the first fifteen minutes of a map they only really have to watch out for one person. Junglers take hell the moment their Ezreal coughs up first blood to the enemy Vayne at minute 3.

As a SUPPORT main I can approve of this message.

Yeah we supports have it rough; it's hard having to protect someone from both the enemy AND from themselves, assisting the whole team by going into dangerous territory for the sake of vision, and once the laning phase ends it's our job to act as a support to 4 players instead of 1, but Junglers basically have it reversed, having to be a "support" for 3 lanes/4 players from the get go and then expected to be everywhere at once, it's pretty terrible.

It's also why I don't jungle, as I'm terrible at keeping myself fully aware of everything going on on the map, and im terrible at predicting what the enemy jungler is going to do and where they're going to be, etc etc. You guys have to play chess while all we supports have to do in comparison is babysit and play lookout more or less.

Talk about saving people from themselves, try and get a cocky top laner to stop trying to split push when we don't have vision of any enemies. Sometimes I wish I could jungle Kalista so I could yank people out of stupid situations at my discretion instead of having to rush in to try and save them.

I'm actually the opposite. I love to jungle BECAUSE I'm really comfortable being able to step back a bit and look at the large flow of action on a map. I guess it's something to do with growing up playing Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics games haha. Half of the time I can call where the enemy jungler is about to show up before they pop on the screen just by watching the laners do their thing, and it isn't hard for me to peg down player's patterns so I know when to expect them to do certain things after they've shown me their hand. I even keep up with how my laners are doing in CS compared to their enemies so I know where I need to put more pressure while trying to analyze how the enemy laners are handling their champions so I can tell whether they're being overly aggressive or passive and try to use that against them depending on who I'm playing. And god, does my inner Nocturne just LOVE when enemies overextend... and then waste their ult on my spellshield.

Eh, I much prefer my dedicated junglers than trying to do more gimmicky ones. Plus you'd have even less chance of having your ult readily available than an ADC Kalista who selecs the top laner for it. I didn't say it wouldn't work, just that I wish I could. I keep myself from it lol

Nah, that one's usually balanced with the enemy team replying "your jungler is the only good player." That sweet, sweet vindication.

I'd like to see marksmen do anything without supports setting them up for kills early. I'd like to see mid and top laners win their lane without ganks.

Sure it can happen. But chances are that if we want you to get it, we're going to make it a hell of a lot easier. We lift you up so you can carry us from the pedestal we put you on.

Honestly I don't main support... But I do love playing it. I actually was last pick for every ge in my promo out of silver and into gold and as a result was a support for every game. Instea of picking mages like a lot of posts here say to play, I picked big play makers like thresh, Janna, and blitz (sounds troll but many silver adc's can't dodge and when the enemy picks a Mage support blitz ruins their lives. ) I crushedy promos as support and honestly carried my adc's. Just remember the most important rule, protect your carry.

As thresh it's great to hook the enemy carry, and lantern in your amumu jungle, but after that you don deal damage so no need to keep on the carry, back off and stick to your ADC like glue. Peel for that man. Peel like he is a goddamn orange. Flay 'erry one back, hook their cc, just keep him in the fight. Blitz is simple, hook either their carry, or their cc squishy (like zyra or someone), as Janna? Your job is disengage. If you are losing a fight ult and retreat, if you are winning, slow their carries and sheiks yours. If the fight is even do what you can to peel, and ult to heal your team/ split theirs. Team fight go haywire once your team is split. You can carry as a support, just remember it's a team game.

Hi, my name is Venaven and I started from Silver two seasons in a row and worked my way up to diamond by playing support almost exclusively. You being stuck in silver isn't due to the league you're in, it's your inability to understand how to properly climb with your role. Silver is incredibly easy regardless of the role you're playing provided you actually are of a higher skill level than the bracket, which you're clearly, evidently not. Sorry that this sounds rude, but the reality is simply that you're not as good as you think you are and if you're stuck in silver, then you do in fact belong in silver. Of course you've picked a role that you believe to be low impact if those around you are less skillful, because that way it's easier for you to believe that you're just "trapped in elo hell", but the reality is that supports carry harder than ADCs ESPECIALLY in lower elo during the laning phase. You don't actually know what you're doing, and you are in fact a silver skill level, sorry. I know I'll probably be downvoted to oblivion by players who are also trapped in silver and bronze and believe that it's due to their teammates, while they fail to understand that you need to carry in order to climb, and that, regardless of surrounding ineptitude, carrying at lower elos is incredibly easy if you're actually a high skill level (ie not silver or bronze), but oh well, it's to be expected. If you actually want to climb, you need to be willing first and foremost to accept that it's your fault and you need to improve, even if everyone around you is bad, you need to get better in order to carry them, and if you can't do that, then you're bad too, and you probably are a lot worse than you think you are and don't fully realize your own mistakes, of which there are an innumerable amount at lower elos, because even in platinum or diamond or beyond players still make tons of mistakes. Having to carry your team, a team which appears "inferior" in relation to the enemy's team (due to bias and an inability to swing the momentum of the game properly) is something that never goes away, and in fact only gets HARDER as your elo rises. If you think that you're "stuck in elo hell" because of your team and carrying against the enemy team is too hard, then in what universe does this become easier at higher elos? It doesn't, it only gets worse and gets harder to carry because everyone involved is more skillful, yes your team will be better, but so will the enemy team, and your team is only "better" when compared to lower elos, but in the context of its own elo area it's on equal or slightly worse footing than the opposition usually, and with a larger skill pool to work with all around, all plays have more impact and more consequence, thus there is far more weight placed on the player wishing to carry, as there is less room for error and more effort required to overcome the skill level they're up against overall.

It doesn't matter how good you are if you have 4 teammates who don't know proper warding, don't know how to engage, don't know how to focus effectively, don't know how to disengage, don't know how to follow up, and have no concept of objective control.

I love support and when i get the skill level to climb to where supports actually act like supports(im assuming gold or higher) then i will finally get to refine my support game. BUt in silver the best way to support is to just choose a mage and pretend to support. Zyra, sona, zilean,(i have problems with brand because his cc is skill shot based) all become late game monsters if built with ap. Start with frostthief level it up to the second level asap to maximize gold generation(i have never finished a line of support items) skip sightstone because lets face it at silver ELO NO ONE pays attention to the map and proceed to melt faces. I can often outdamage most of my team as support which effectively makes the game 5v4 if the other support tries to support. BY the time the by sightstone and upgrade their gold geenration item im at magic pen boots and haunting guise. GG bot lane.

Zirzon2 votes

I got to gold by doing nothing but filling whatever role was left. That often ended up being support. In fact, I think Thresh ended up being my most played champ. Climbing the ranks can be difficult at any role, but if you are good enough, or try long enough, you'll make it through eventually.

Duke Anax2 votes

I'm a support main too, and I noticed there is just two things, you need to do to win a game as support:

  1. don't die

  2. Ping the hell out of dragon

Seriously just don't die, it's actually that simple. When your team is suicidal, let them die, always retreat in time and get fed on assists, late game a fed Soraka becomes immortal and a fed Alistar can tear down a base in a minute.

It seems in low mmr people don't even notice that beast exists, then they wodner that the enemy wipes the floor with them after some dragon buffs. Just watch the timer and press the issue, everytime, same for baron.

I've had some pretty thick junglers though, who'd gank mid, gank bot, gank mid, gank bot, everytime passing me standing and pinging in the dragon pit. Try to get one of your carries to do the job instead.

BrutalCabbage2 votes

As a support you pretty much have to win botlane EVERY SINGLE GAME (if you don't win lane at least 90% of your games in Silver you don't deserve to climb, learned the hard way) and roam if needed. Make sure you have your team focused on objectives (pinging drag is actually a very good way).

Junglers who complain have literally no idea what they're doing. Carrying through jungle is easier than carrying through toplane since you have a way bigger impact. Sure, if 3 lanes lose by min 5 (which rarely happens) there isn't much you can do, but you can snowball one or more lanes of yours before that or at least counterjungle and be useful.

Or play Soraka. Start with item 3301 and some blue pots. Take Q>W, with later levels balanced depending on whether you need the damage or heals more. (I usually max Q first.) Build item 3028 followed by item 3152 for even more self-healing. Then just start stacking AP... good odds that since your lane is probably winning (because your carry can't die) the enemy will be building more armor than MR, so you'll melt straight through them with those 5-second Starcalls.

Everything was good till you said coin.

coin is a terrible item, only people who dont know how to support buy it. You're better off buying one of the other items and switching to talisman if you need the speed boost that bad.

Ale non è male5 votes

i guess you don't know the new Raka, do you? Go with Coin line is necessary from the start, because with the health cost on W you need the health regen given by item 3096 as soon as you can to use effectively W (and no, going with item 3097 does not work because Raka still need mana regn to spam skills)

Coin line since Medallion give you gold, mana regen and health regen, and evolves in Talisman which is never a bad item to have since the active

Acolarh4 votes

Like the guy before me said, coin is the item to buy for Soraka. You're going to be spending health to heal up your ally, and the amount of regen you get from coin will outweigh the benefit from other items.

That said, I don't know that the rest of that build he had will be worth much.

Spacesuit Spiff2 votes

yeah, support is miserable in silver. either play a mage, or play blitz and take advantage of the fact that nobody will realize you can pull them during lategame.

thing is, support is one of the better roles to play above silver, surprisingly. adc has a lower skillfloor (you last-hit, you kite, you don't run into melee range, people mostly get this at gold and higher) than support, and assuming you have an adc thats at least playing above that skillfloor, it's usually better to have a good support to get them fed.

I was in a tournament at my college recently where the teams were mostly 1 plat and 4 silvers. I saw that the plat on the enemy team was an adc main, so I went support and effectively took him straight out of the game for an easy victory. you don't really see this is silver soloq, but once the adcs are competent its the supports skill that matters.

PapaFizz1 votes

The skill difference between Silver n' Plat isin't that high. The mechanics of the ADC remain EXACTlY the same all the way up to the higher Plats. The two main variables are Decision making and the two lesser roles (Jungler and Support). If both the Support and Jungler play at a competent level you can easily carry.

Skorzen1 votes

Errr there isn't a big difference in mechanics from bronze-gold. Plat is when mechanics making really get refined. An exception to this is Plat 5 where the mechanics/decision making are completely variable. The development of decision making is fairly consistent through all leagues. Also, ADC has a very high skill cap. The issue with ADC is that they are stuck in a duo lane. To show how this is a factor there will be a bit of math (For this scenario we will say it is 50% whether you are better than them or not) . So 50% that you are a better adc, for you to win lane we will say that both you and your support must be better than the opponents. If one of you is better than your opponents but not the other the lane is canceled out. Using this method, you get a 25% chance of winning lane, a 25% chance of losing lane, and a 50% chance of the lane going even. This is why adc skill could possibly be considered less important than support or other lanes. The laners have a 50% chance of winning(on a side note i realized i didn't take consideration other lanes going even, however I feel that solo lanes usually do have a person that comes out substantially stronger even if the lane isnt 10/0) while adcs usually go even or don't have a substantial lead on the other team and can have less impact on the game than any laner until late game. One final point. If you look at Chinese adcs in a professional game or even Rekkles, you will see that adcs have a skill cap that is as high or higher than other laners.

PapaFizz1 votes

I disagree about the first part. Mid Silver is when actual mechanics become more competent. Bronze mechanics are absolute shit. CS between Bronze and Mid silver aren't even comparable "Muh 100 CS at 20 Minutes Average". I'd like to say Silver 4 to Platinum 3 is only a slight improvement in mechanics. There's literally almost no difference between a silver and a gold as far as I can tell. Decision making for both is "Odd" at best. Jungle thou. The improvement between a Silver and even Gold jungler is just MASSIVE. Neither ward at all but clear times and gank performance is just vastly improved.

Maybe you're right about Plat V being the only variable. I've noticed that all the V's in every Division are "Bad". My primary experience with Plats has always been Plat 5s and 3s (I can rarely find a 4 for some reason) in draft pick (Norms) So I'm probably speaking out of my ass.

Skorzen1 votes

Not to be a douche here, but Mid Silver has no mechanics. Low gold is like low silver. It is basically the same as the league under it and unless you can compare a ranked game between high gold to high silver then I don't think you can make the claim that their is no mechanical improvement. CSing is the most basic mechanic and is developed the earliest but gold-plat more mechanics are developed, such as when to shove lane, orb-walking and dealing with split pushing. Jungling development is primarily mechanical between silver and gold.Drag pressure gets really emphasized in mid to high gold which is where you see a lot of jungler decision making. To be brutally honest, statistically what your saying cannot be true because the ranking system is so steep. Since silver is in the middle of the curve the difference between gold and silver would be minimal (which it basically is). The difference between silver and plat has a much more severe slope than the silver to gold slope. The difference in mechanical skill would have to also increase dramatically.

jg and support deserve more than they get, they are the hardest roles with most sacrifice but gets the least and alway get blamed.

Support role actually more complicated than solo lanes . People don't realize how much of a skill gap this role can have and often don't appreciate what supports do .

You can carry games as ap support in solo q.

Good support can shut down both AD and other support which often will secure victory .

Some of the potential game support carries:

Annie - Build her as if you build ap carry . Annie path lever 6 brings insane utility and damage. You will out scale other support toward mid game and carry

Morgana - Morgana is very strong at protecting carries . Her ultimate has higher utility than regular supports .

Janna - her late game utility is unmatched . I always pick her with Caitlyn or jinx for insane damage .

Blitz - I pick blitz to shut down cheesy supports like zilean, brand, velkoz and other squashy scam.

On a whim I decided to play Ranked for the first time this past season, played nothing but Nami and Sona (And one super awkward jungle Shyv game) and my placements were a mess. But, I wound p getting placed into Silver 5. From there I wound up being able to climb up to Silver 3 before I got distracted by life and had to walk away from League for a while. Supporting in Ranked isn't as much as a slog as people keep claiming it is. I honestly think Jungle has the roughest time with it.

In all seriousness though the best piece of advice I got when climbing silver as a support main is to play scaling ap mages( brand, lux, velkoz) or champions that have low cd impactful ults( karma, sona, braum). The more you play the better your micro and understanding of the game will be. Communication is also huge. If you get ahead get deep wards( enemy jungle) and roam. The more people you can help the better off your team will be. Lastly don't tilt and if you do keep it to yourself. Support is generally the least micro intensive role besides jungle in the game. Solo laners and AD's have to dedicate a lot of their focus on farming and trading and don't need your venting stacked on that. If you can do anything to mitigate awareness issues on their part do it. Call out summoners and and enemy jungler location. Ping ALL lanes that don't have enemy champions in them for prolonged periods of time. Big objectives should be warded constantly after the 10 minute mark. It's a slow climb but a rewarding one (: .

Hige1 votes

Yeah being a support in silver kinda sucks, while in silver and bronze you have to play champions that makes big plays, people's morale is way flimsier so when you outplay them they start playing worse and worse and ultimately you'll win.

When you get to gold things change a bit, people is way more secure about what they're doing and mechanically you can trust your adc to be a bit more competent. As a matter of fact, in gold and above, bot lane's pace is determined by the support and not the adc.

So I'd suggest to start playing something else until you reach gold where people know how to take advantage of your power.
